He often re-photographs prints up to ten times, injecting layer upon layer of distortion and, in the process, emphasising the mediums inability to represent past events accurately or truthfully. His experimentation with delay, reverb and echo in this sense is inspired by certain strains of electronic music, playing with the way one perceives time and altering it in a visual way. This series of haunting, distorted and otherworldly images epitomises his approach.

In her underwear and topless, Kim places herself at the centre of various public spaces for this series, published as a large foldout poster. According to Kim, We are always on display. Our lives are curated across an ever-increasing number of media and social media platforms I put my life on display because I want to. But the exhibitionism of the work on display here is not meant to fill some perverse voyeuristic desire.

Published in 1988, this work portrays the steady decline of communities in Northern England--former manufacturing powerhouses that were gradually compromised by the policies of Margaret Thatcher and her predecessors from the mid-1970s onward. Killips black-and-white photographs were mostly taken with 4 x 5 film, and provide an unflinching look at these disenfranchised northern towns and the poverty visited upon them by deindustrialization. His father, Ray, was an unemployed, chronic alcoholic, often sleeping the whole day through, while Liz, Billinghams overweight and heavily tattooed mother, filled her home with porcelain dolls and jigsaw puzzles, housing ten cats and three dogs. These are Billinghams subjects. In stark comparison to conventional family photos around the dinner table or in front of the Christmas tree, Billinghams images are raw, intimate and often uncomfortably humorous. First published in 2000, Rays a Laugh is now considered one of the most important British photo books of the recent past.
