AWS 2O0 Grade 10 Digital Media Art Art Fundamentals:

Like a chocolate chip cookie that has a specific set of instructions, in the format of a recipe, to make the perfect cookie, art has a set of instructions that can guide the artist to use the ingredients or elements to make eye-catching and amazing art.

These instructional tools are called . The instructions or Principles include:

BALANCE, SCALE AND PROPORTION, RHYTHM AND MOVEMENT, DOMINANCE AND EMPHASIS, CONTRAST AND VARIETY, AND UNITY

BALANCE
Balance Balance is overall visual weight of a composition. There are 3 types of Balance.

1. Symmetric Balance: This balance is achieved when the objects on either side of a central axis is similar or the same.

2. Asymmetric Balance: This balance is achieved when aspects of the object are NOT distributed equally on each side but their total weight is balanced.

3. Radial Balance: This balance is achieved when axis point originates from the centre of the composition and objects fan out from that point.

SCALE & PROPORTION


Change in scale or proportion of an object is made to help other objects stand and/ Or make the viewer question the juxtaposition (meaning when theyre placed side by side).

RHYTHM & MOVEMENT

Rhythm is the regular repetition of elements of art to produce a look and feel of movement.

Movement in a composition guides a viewers eye through the work, usually to the focal point. By using lines, shapes, forms, colours, etc. the artist can produce the look of action.
Movement IS NOT ACHIEVED BY THE A IMAGE OF SOMEONE OR SOMETHING MOVING.

There is movement shown in this photograph but it is not simply shown by the fact that people are on their bicycles. They could be just sitting on their bicycles. How do we know that they are moving? What Elements tell you that they are moving and how? Where do your eyes start and finish as you look at the photo?

DOMINANCE AND EMPHASIS


Dominance or Emphasis is achieved when certain elements are stressed more than others. This may be done by contrasting colour, size, texture, and shape. Typically, this area is the focal point.

CONTRAST & VARIETY

CONTRAST
Contrast is an abrupt, unexpected change in an element.

Contrast can include differences in:

FOCUS

COLOUR

VALUE

VARIETY
When there are many changes and multiple qualities occur, variety is created.

A variety of fruits in a composition with a wide range of colours and textures contrast and variety is achieved.

UNITY
Unity is achieved when everything in the work suggests the same theme according to colours, typography, imagery, texture, illustration, lines. Similar colours, textures, line, brushwork, etc. are used to create the composition.
