Boys swim team takes state title
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
With an undefeated season and
South Jersey Coaches Invitation-
al title in tow, the Moorestown
High School boys swim team can
now add state champion to its re-
sume.
In the NJSIAA Public B finals
on Sunday, Feb. 24 at The College
of New Jersey, junior standout
Zach Fong took over the lead on
the third leg of the final event, the
400-yard freestyle relay, and soph-
omore Alex Martin finished the
race in 3:15.04. The eight points
for the victory clinched
Moorestown's 19th championship
and first title since 1999 with an
87-83 victory over Princeton High
School.
Our goal was to get back and
win it this time since weve been
so close these last few seasons,
head coach Jeff DeNick said. We
were able to count on our depth
and strength in the outside lanes
all season.
In 2011, the team lost in the
South Jersey Public B finals, 119-
51, to Haddonfield. In 2012, it fell
to Scotch Plains, 104-66, in the
Public B semifinals. Last season,
it lost to Summit, 88-82, in the
state finals. DeNick said it be-
came apparent this team was spe-
cial at the end of January when it Special to The Sun

The Open Space Advisory
Committee made a special pres-
entation at the Moorestown
Council meeting on Feb. 24.
Im really pleased to be wel-
coming the open space commit-
tee, Council Member Victoria
Napolitano said.
Committee member Claire
Rollin Adair and committee
chair Maura Dey gave the presen-
tation regarding the Flying
Feather Farm 347 Bridgeboro
Road.
Two specific parcels must be
approved by council for the fami-
ly owning the farm to maintain
the farm as it is, because under
state law, the farm does not quali-
fy for the county farmland
preservation title.
A 12-acre parcel and a 14-acre
parcel are in question. Land re-
stricting deeds may need to be
lifted by the council for the farm
to do some work on the land.
The farm does not qualify for
such protection and grants war-
ranted by the county farmland
preservation title due to its small
size and a few extraneous factors
not yet mentioned by the commit-
tee at the meeting.
Centered on the councils help
to preserve the farm, a history of
the farm was first read by Adair,
with an opening that dates back
to 1955 when, fresh eggs were de-
livered door-to-door, she said.
The committee does not want
to jeopardize crucial farmland to
other developments or services.
Instead, it is asking the board for
legal help in preserving the land,
and possibly expanding it.
Generally speaking, Adair and
Dey mentioned the strong agri-
cultural workforce that the farm
maintains in town. The iconic na-
ture of the farm was definitely
not overlooked.
Flying Feather Farm is an
iconic part of Moorestowns land-
scape and history, Dey said.
Dey mentioned that the
boards help with preservation of
the farm will add to the sustain-
ability of our town.
All council members made re-
marks regarding trying to work
with the farm to help it maintain
preservation space and possibly
expand its borders.
Were at the beginning of a
very long process I think we
should fully support moving for-
ward with this, Councilman
Greg Newcomer said.
Whole-heartedly, Deputy
Mayor Stacy Jordan added.
The committee will be present-
ing further data related to the
farm at future meetings.
In other news:
The Jeff Young Memorial
Park hockey rink was mentioned
as possibly needing repairs due
to the inclement weather experi-
enced this winter. No plans were
formed, but the board recognized
the rink would need some pot-
holes repaired.
There was talk among the
board members about what to do
with the old library building
when the new library opens for
public use in May.
The existing library space of
course needs to be determined,
but theres tons of boxes ... its
going to take more than a couple
of weeks, Township Manager
Scott Carew said, regarding the
library cleanup process.
The board discussed a water
leak in a pipe associated with the
Lenola Road Shopping Center.
The board took no action, but de-

South Valley Elementary
School students participated in
the national Random Acts of
Kindness Week, from Feb. 10 to
14.
Under the direction of guid-
ance counselor Maureen Ioan-
nucci, and in partnership with
the Home and School Associa-
tion, the students participated
in kind acts every day of the
week.
Students submitted artwork
that will be distributed to the eld-
erly in local nursing homes and
in Meals on Wheels boxes
through Color a Smile, a non-prof-
it organization spreading smiles
with cheerful drawings.
South Valley Home and School
volunteer Betsi Yurkewicz took
her children to deliver food dona-
tions collected at South Valleys
BINGO Night, to the food pantry
at Saint Matthews Church.
The Procopio, Carmasino,
Petriello and Peterson families
spent an afternoon not only deliv-
ering food, but also helping to
check expiration labels and stock
shelves at the pantry.
Items such as peanut butter,
jelly, syrup and complete pancake
mix were donated.
Not only did these activities
build school spirit, but also em-
phasized the importance of help-
ing others.

INTERIMPUBLISHER
F
or the past few years, Gov.
Christie has been bold and
straightforward with his push
for reform, tax cuts and hope during
his annual state budget address.
Last week, he was anything but.
Instead of painting a rosy picture of
a bright future for New Jersey,
Christie stuck to reality and seemed
to cast a potential dark cloud. If we
dont do something about pensions
soon, well all be paying for it dearly
later, is what he said.
Christies proposed $34.4 billion
budget includes a full payment of $2.25
billion for state workers pensions. But
he said that changes he made to the
pension plan a few years ago arent
doing enough, and said that too much
of New Jerseys spending goes toward
what he called entitlements, a
phrase his opponents, and union lead-
ers, obviously took exception to.
With our long-term obligations
only set to increase in the coming
years, the problem will not go away by
itself, he said. We cannot wish it
away. We cannot make it go away by
magic. What we must do is what we
were sent here to do by the people to
lead and to act decisively again.
Democrats responded by saying that
the pension reforms are working just
fine, and time will prove that every-
thing is A-OK.
Were not so sure that the system
will simply fix itself, but we also dont
necessarily agree with Christie that
more major changes are needed right
now.
What we do agree with is that more
spending cuts need to be made some-
where. The state needs to get out of
debt or at least move closer back to
even and it needs to do so soon.
Local county governments, municipal-
ities and school districts need to share
more services to cut spending without
cutting quality of services and the
state needs to provide these entities
with the ability to do so.
So what to do? Who really knows?
While making more major changes
might be the answer, sitting back and
doing nothing isnt either.

For the first time, Moorestown Town-
ship Public Schools will collectively help
local food banks. With a start date of
March 14, the project known as Food for All
Fridays is being spearheaded by a teacher
at Baker Elementary School who asked not
to be mentioned by name.
The original idea for the charity came
from an experience the teacher had while
working with a school district in Massa-
chusetts in 2005. According to the Food for
All Fridays teachers, though the district
was located in an affluent suburban town,
comparable to Moorestown, food banks at
local community centers and churches ran
almost completely empty. The problem was
not solved until students and teachers de-
cided to help.
The idea was generated by a group of
staff and community members who want-
ed to do something to help the food
pantries by keeping them supplied with
food, Moorestown Education Association
President Lisa Trapani said.
On the second Friday of each month,
MTPS students district-wide are welcome
to bring in shelf-stable food donations to be
distributed among three local food
pantries. The pantries are all located in
Moorestown and give free food to families
in need.
By pulling our resources together,
schools, staff members, the Home and
School Association and community mem-
bers, we believe that we can ensure that the
Moorestown food pantries will remain
fully stocked, Trapani said.
Specific pantry locations include the
Bethel African Methodist Episcopal
Church, Saint Matthews Church and the
First Baptist Church. According to the
group, the First Baptist Church is a major
priority location for food donation because
it sits on Main Street. The New Jersey
Transit bus route makes a stop right next
to the church, so families in need have the
most reliable transportation options to this
location.
To seek approval for the project, teach-
ers had to first contact administrators, who
approved the idea.

Shakespeares Romeo and Juli-

All tickets can be purchased at

"The great thing about Shake-
speare is that the themes he uses

won the coaches invitational.
We competed so well against
the other schools in the area at
the end of January in the invita-
tional that I knew we could be
there come state tournament
time, DeNick said. The team
kicks it up a notch when it comes
to the playoffs.
Even though the Quakers grad-
uated 18 seniors from last years
team, DeNick felt comfortable
with the talent and experience
coming back to keep expectations
high.
Anything less than a sectional
title would have been a disap-
pointment, but it really is a great
accomplishment for this team to
beat Princeton, who had six sen-
iors and really are at the top of
their game, DeNick said. Were
still a young team in comparison.
Our guys really took it upon
themselves to train and be pre-
pared to put themselves in this
position.
That youth will translate to
high expectations for
Moorestown again next season.
We are graduating three mem-
bers of the team, one starter so it
is exciting to look at next season
and what we may be able to do,
DeNick said. For me, I really
think going forward we have a
shot to be back in the final next
year as well. Its a neat thing and
really exciting for our program
and for the school.

cided to further discuss the issue
at a future meeting.
Certainly leaking water is
one issue, but apparently the sys-
tem is affecting people in that
shopping center and may be com-
ing a threat to business, New-
comer said.
Council authorized the pur-
chase of new town hall furniture
under state contract. The new
town hall will be connected to the
new library building. The total
furniture cost was set at
$163,186.57.
Though some audience mem-
bers raised concern about the
cost, the council assured them
that most furniture being pur-
chased is strictly for seating for
the public. Certain items, such as
conference tables, are getting
reused from the old town hall.
The next meeting dates are
March 10 and March 24, both at
7:30 p.m. in the Moorestown High
School I.T. room.

MARCH 511, 2014 THE MOORESTOWN SUN 15
ciation then got involved to help
the leaders of Food for All Fri-
days spread the word about the
start date to local non-profits,
such as MooreKids, Live Civilly,
Sean Fishel Connect and Our
Shared Ground.
According to the group, it is a
very rare opportunity to have so
many different groups take part
in one cause and work collabora-
tively.
A teacher at Roberts Elemen-
tary, associated with the group,
helped devise a plan to collect the
canned items in schools, which
would not take out any extra time
from the school day. According to
the group, canvas bags have al-
ready been collected, and are
ready and waiting for donations
in classrooms district-wide. The
canvas bags displaying the chari-
ty name were previously collect-
ed by the MEA using a state grant
labeled pride and public educa-
tion.
The MEA received a pride in
public education grant to provide
the tote bags that each classroom
will use to collect and transport
the food items once a month to
the pantries on a rotating basis.
It is a wonderful MEA, Home and
School, and community event,
Trapani said.
At the start time of each Food
for All Fridays, students will drop
donations off as soon as they take
off their backpacks. No time will
be taken away from lessons when
collecting food. After school days
when donations are collected,
teachers and other charitable
members of the Food for All Fri-
days family will drop the dona-
tions off to the pantries.
According to the group, the
short amount of time the entire
donation process will take, now
that the preliminary work is
done, is not a burden to those in-
volved in any way.
The Interact Club at
Moorestown High School and the
Oasis Club at Moorestown Middle
School were inspired by the Food
for All Fridays charity. Both clubs
have decided to help the food
pantries in different ways in the
near future.
To get involved with Food for
All Fridays, please visit any of
the food pantries during regular
daytime hours. To contact admin-
istrators regarding the charity,
please visit www.mtps.com.
