Teaching the basic addition and subtraction
facts is VERY important. However, it isnt
as easy as it seems like it should be.
This Lapbook consists of many games for
drilling the math facts; however, in order for
them to work they require repetition. Have
your students play these games over and over
in order to REALLY see results. Encourage
your students to play the games with siblings,
parents, friends, etc.

How do I get started?
First you will want to gather your supplies. Depending on which format you
purchased from us, you will need different supplies. Take what applies, and
skip over the rest.
*** Printing:
*Print instructions and study guide on white copy paper.
*Print the booklet templates on 24# colored paper or 110# cardstock.
For some booklets, we have suggested specific colors or cardstock.
You may choose to use those suggested colors, or you may choose
to print on any color that you like.
*** Assembly:
*Folders: We use colored file folders, which can be
found at Walmart, Sams, Office Depot, Costco, etc. You will need between
1 and 4 file folders, depending on which product you have purchased.
You may use manila folders if you prefer, but we have found that
children respond better with the brightly colored folders. Dont worry
about the tabs.they arent important. If you prefer, you can purchase
the assembled lapbook bases from our website.
*Glue: For the folder assembly, we use hot glue. For booklet
assembly we use glue sticks and sometimes hot glue, depending on
the specific booklet. We have found that bottle glue stays wet for too
long, so its not a great choice for lapbooking.
*Other Supplies: Of course, you will need scissors. Many
booklets require additional supplies. Some of these include metal
brad fasteners, paper clips, ribbon, yarn, staples, hole puncher, etc. You may
want to add decorations of your own, including stickers, buttons,
coloring pages, cut-out clipart, etc. The most important thing
is to use your imagination! Make it your own!!

Ok. Ive gathered the supplies. Now how do I use this
product?
Inside you will find several sections. They are as follows:
1. Teachers Guide: This section includes information about the games in this
lapbook, as well as how to teach them. These games will be used for review and
memorization, and it is my opinion that the BEST way to learn the basic math facts
is through repetition. You will see explanations of each game that your student is to
make for his lapbook. This section is a great resource for the parent/teacher because
it also provides extra activities that you may choose to do in order to reinforce the
topic. Dont feel that you MUST do EVERYTHING that is listed. Pick and choose
what works best for your student.
Activities that are JUST suggestions, from which you may choose what works
best for your student, are marked with a circle like this:
Booklets and games for your lapbook are marked with a folder shape like this:
If you are a box checker, like me, you can check inside the circle or folder when
you have completed that activity.
2. Student Instructions: This section is written directly to the student in language
that he or she can understand. However, depending on the age of the child there
may be some parent/teacher assistance needed. These instructions will tell the
student exactly how to assemble the lapbook base and how to cut out and assemble
each booklet or game. Here, they will find a layout of where each booklet or game
should be placed in the lapbook and pictures of a completed lapbook.
Remember the Student Instructions are written directly to the
student.but YOU will probably need to assist. The assembly
instructions are NOT repeated within the Teachers Guide.
3. Templates: This section includes all of the templates to make the booklets and
games for the lapbook. Within the Student Instructions the student is told on what
page to find each template.

Basic Addition & Subtraction Facts Lapbook Games
Your math curriculum should introduce your student to the basic addition and subtraction facts.
However, repetition is the key to TRULY retaining the information and being able to recall it
quickly.

LAPBOOK Game #1: Addition Bingo - Everyone enjoys Bingo! Use this classic game to help
your student to work on his or her addition facts. Once your student has cut out and
assembled all of the pieces of this game, you will need to be the Caller. Encourage your
student to play this game OVER and OVER and with many different people. Remember,
repetition is the key. There are 2 Bingo Cards for the 0 5 facts and 2 Bingo Cards for the 6
10 facts. There are also Bingo Question Cards for each set of facts. Make sure that you are
using the correct cards with their corresponding question cards. There are also 2 blank cards in
case you want to make additional cards for extra players. Be encouraging to your student!
LAPBOOK Game #2: Addition & Subtraction Blackout Games - This is a fun game that is
played with dice. Again, encourage your child to play this game over and over with many
different people. You can print extra cards if needed. There are 2 cards for the Addition
Blackout Game and 2 cards for the Subtraction Blackout Game. All instructions for the game
are included within the templates for this game.
LAPBOOK Game #3: Color By Number Subtraction Butterfly - This is a fun way for your
student to practice his or her subtraction skills. He will color each part of the butterfly after
solving the subtraction problems. There is a color key within the template.
LAPBOOK Game #4: Subtraction Action Game - This is a very colorful game for helping your
student to remember and retain the subtraction facts. You (or someone else) will need to
serve as the judge or facilitator and make sure that each players answers are correct. All
instructions for the game are included within the booklet that goes along with this game.
(NOTE: There are 2 additional Color By Number pictures that may be completed and glued
to the outside of the lapbook for decorating.)

Additional Addition & Subtraction Activity Suggestions
The following lists many more suggestions for activities that will help your student to retain
addition and subtraction basic facts. Remember: REPETITION is the KEY! Use as many types of
activities as possible, and use them OVER and OVER and OVER. When your student gets bored
with one, switch to another, and then another, and then another. DO NOT move on to more
difficult addition or subtraction UNTIL your child is able to solve basic addition and subtraction
facts within seconds.

ACTIVITY SUGGESTION: Some find it easier to teach addition and subtraction with a
NUMBER LINE. There is one below that you may choose to use with your student. You may
print as many as you need.

Lapbook Base Assembly:
First you will need to assemble the Lapbook Base for your project. This is not such an
easy task, so you will want to ask for some assistance with this part. Also, you should
NEVER use hot glue alone.
For this lapbook you will need 2 file folders. Open each file folder and lay it flat in front
of you. Fold both sides of each folder toward the middle. The edges (or tabs) of the
folded sides should touch the center original fold line on the folders. See Figure 1
below.
Do this to both file folders, and then you will need to connect them together. This is
how to connect them. Lay both file folders out in front of you after you have folded
them all to look like Figure 1. Now glue the smaller flaps of each folder to those of
the next folder as in Figure 2 below. The picture below shows 3, just so that you can
see that more folders can be added.

*Game Title: Addition Bingo
*Student Instructions: Im sure that you have played BINGO before BUT, this is
a NEW way to play. There are actually 2 different BINGO games in this lapbook.
One is for the addition facts from 1 to 5, and the other is for addition facts from 6
to 10. Your teacher/parent will have instructions on how to play. Play over and
over with lots of different friends and family members so that you can memorize
all of these important math facts.

These are on pages 20 - 21 . Cut out along the outer black line edges of each

Below you will find instructions about how to cut out, assemble, and play each
game. IMPORTANT: Each template page is labeled with the Game # to which it
corresponds, which should help you to keep them all together. You will need to
depend on your teacher/parent to explain the rules for most games.

++ Addition Bingo Question Cards for facts 1 5
These are on pages 27 - 31. Cut out along the outer black line edges of each
question card. Place a rubber band around these cards so that they dont get
mixed up with the next set that you will cut.
++ Addition Bingo Question Cards for facts 6 - 10
These are on pages 31 - 36. Cut out along the outer black line edges of each
question card. Place a rubber band around these cards so that they dont get
mixed up with the ones for facts 1 5.
++ Addition Bingo Markers
These are on page 37. Cut out along the outer black line edges of each marker.
++ Addition Bingo Question Card Pocket
This is on page 38. Cut out along the outer black line edges of the pocket. Fold
along the center line so that the title is on the front. Now fold the tabs along their
lines, and glue them in place on the back of the pocket. You may place the cards
with the rubber bands around them inside this pocket. Leave the rubber bands on
the stacks.
++ Addition Bingo Marker Pocket
This is on page 39. Cut out along the outer black line edges of the pocket. Fold
along the center line so that the title is on the front. Now fold the tabs along their
lines, and glue them in place on the back of the pocket. You may place the
markers inside this pocket. You may need to place a paper clip around the
markers, and clip them to the pocket.
++ Addition Bingo Card Pocket
This is on page 40. Cut out along the outer black line edges of the pocket. Fold
along the center line so that the title is on the front. Now fold the tabs along their
lines, and glue them in place on the back of the pocket. You may place all of the
cards inside this pocket. You may need to place a paper clip around the cards, and
clip them to the pocket.

*Game Title: Addition & Subtraction Blackout
*Student Instructions: For this game you will need one die for each person that
plays. Youll see that you have some game boards that are for addition and some
that are for subtraction. Keep those separate from each other. The object of this
game is to cover EVERY space on your game board. Your parent/teacher will
explain the rules, as they are written for you inside the booklet that you are about
to make. Remember, the best way to learn your math facts is to practice, practice,
practice! So invite different people to play this game with you!

Wasnt it fun? Well, this one is fun too, but you get to show how much you know
about subtraction!

**Assembly Instructions: Cut out along the outer black line edges of the game.
Now glue that to another piece of paper of a different color. Cut around the edges
so that you have a small border.
We suggest printing this page on white paper so that your colors will show up
really well.
******** There are 2 additional Color By Number pictures, one for addition
and one for subtraction, on page 58. These are for decorating the outside of your
lapbook.
++ Addition & Subtraction Blackout Directions
This is on page 44. Cut out along the outer black line edges of each page of the
booklet. Then stack the pages so that the title is on top, and the pages are in order.
Now punch 2 holes through the top of the booklet. Secure with metal brad
fasteners or a ribbon.

*Student Instructions: For this game you will need one die for each person that
plays. Your parent/teacher will explain the rules, as they are written for you on
one of the pieces that you are about to make. Practice, practice, practice! Invite
different people to play this game with you!

Play is the same for
Addition Blackout and
Subtraction Blackout. The
following rules are written
for Addition Blackout, so if
you are playing Subtraction
Blackout, just use the
appropriate cards and
subtract the numbers
instead of adding them.
1. Give each player a game
board, 2 dice, and
something for markers (jelly
beans, cookies, pennies,
etc)
2. For each turn, the player
rolls the dice and adds the
two numbers on the top of
the dice.
3. That player then covers
the number that represents
the sum of the two
numbers. For example, if a
player rolls a 3 + 5, then
cover the 8 space.
4. The next player rolls the
dice, and does the same.

covered (BLACKOUT!)
6. That player should yell,
Blackout! and is declared
