GILBERT TEMPLE OPEN HOUSE

Recently, I began noticing a pattern in the scriptures that relates to this months Small and Simple Things goal of daily, personal scripture study. While reading in Jacob, I noticed that nearly every major conversion story in the scriptures results from the person having a personal spiritual experience. Sometimes the experience is initiated or facilitated by a teacher (prophet, missionary, parent), but it nearly always ends with the person having a personal experience with Heavenly Father or the Savior. Results from this kind of conversion are real & permanent. Consider Jacob 7:5, where Jacob describes Sherems attempt to dissuade him from the faith: And he had hope to shake me from the faith, notwithstanding the many revelations and the many things which I had seen concerning these things; for I truly had seen angels, and they had ministered unto me. And also, I had heard the voice of the Lord speaking unto me in very word, from time to time; wherefore, I could not be shaken. This scripture, like many others, shows that when we have personal experiences with the Spirit (rather than group or even family), our conversion is strong. My hope is that each of us will work to improve not only our family scripture study, but also our daily, personal study, enabling us to have personal spiritual experiences that strengthen our conversion and bring us closer to Jesus Christ.
