Roman WebQuest

Name Jae Hwa Lee Class _______Tigers________ Directions: Over the next few days we will be further exploring the empire of ancient Rome. Using the internet, iPads, and links provided below, search for information to answer the corresponding questions. Be sure to thoroughly explore each area, as answers will be listed in a variety of locations. Please make a copy of this document and save it in your Humanities Shared Folder. Type in your answers as you find them. Use your own words to answer the questions. In order to keep up you should try to complete at least 10-15 questions each day. Romes Pivotal Emperors: & iPad - ROMA - The Emperors - Timeline 1.) How did Augustus become emperor of Rome? He use to do a job in the senate then, he became important to the governments that made him in a high position that he controlled the state that helped him transformed into a emperor. He use to have a different name and he was adopted by Cesar that made him important too. 2.) What was significant about Vespasians rule? He got the armies support that made him make a law that made a rule from him. The law is suppose to come from generations but he broke the rule and made his own rule, law. 3.) How did Hadrian control the borders of the Roman Empire? He built walls around the Roman empires end so no one could come in. 4.) Why was Antonius Pius rule considered a difficult one? It was hard for him because he was after the people that were really liked, a lot of people liked the emperors before him that made him hard to rule. 5.) What did Marcus Aurelius do to increase social mobility? He let the lower level into higher levels easily. He was really close to the senate co-emperors. 6.) Septimius Severus realized that an emperors true power lay where? He waited for the power to come to him, he didnt force the power to come to him. 7.) Describe one of Constantines achievements:

After exploring the bubble views, 3-D views, and overlays of these famous buildings, what is one thing you found interesting about Roman architecture? I figured out that its really big and old. There are a lot of statues, decorations on the buildings around them. It is really surprising how the place before the building was totally different.

The Official Truth: Propaganda in the Roman Empire by Dr Neil Faulkner 1.) How did Roman emperors describe barbarians? Julius Caesar and the Romans called the Barbarians lawless and dangerous. 2.) How were Roman emperors depicted to influence public opinion? Roman emperors were depicted as courageous warriors and generals that people could rely on. Also, They were depicted as a very thoughtful people that people could rely on to make wise decisions for the country. 3.) Why was Hadrians Wall built? The Hadrians wall was built to symbolize the greatness of the Roman empire. 4.) How was religion in the Roman Empire treated? The religion in the Roman Empire was where they worshipped the gods, the emperor, and certain members from the imperial family. 5.) What were some of the religious duties of Roman emperors? Their religious duty was to support Christianity and protect Christians from other religions (enemies). Mosaics of Roman Britain Gallery 1.) After looking through the mosaics, tell me which one is your favorite, and why: My first favorite one is Sea-horse because it looks pretty and smooth. I like horses and I like the sea, that is blue and because I was born in the year of the horse.

My second favorite one is Cross detail because it looks cool where it looks like a chain that locks different chains. Roman Religion Gallery & iPad - ROMA - Religion: 1.) Describe early religion in the Roman empire: They believed in spirits of the households, who connected with the grain harvest, and Lares and Penates. Those were the oldest and the earliest religion that were believed at Rome. 2.) How did the Greeks influence Roman religious practices? They had many festivals, they offered food and wine, and animal sacrifices. 3.) What religion was seen as a threat to the Roman Empire? Why was it a threat? If they believe in Christianity, they were killed by emperors.

Romes Greatest Enemies Gallery: 1.) Who were the Visigoths? Describe their achievements: They are a group of strong soldiers. They attacked empires like Valens at Hadrianople. 2.) Who was Attila? Describe his achievements: Attila was a king of the Huns, Romes greatest enemies. His achievements were that they defeated eastern armies and the took over the cities at Balcons. 3.) List three of Hannibals achievements: Hannibals achievements were that his armies conquered North Spain, In Italy, he defeated the Roman army 3 times, and last but not least, the mastery of the combined use of infantry and cavalry which he use to defeat the Roman armies. I have to listen to advice and move the soldiers as the people told you. Social Pecking Order in the Roman World: 1.) Describe the differences between the classes in ancient Rome: There are free people and slaves. The slaves are owned by their masters. In the free peoples group, there are citizens and non-citizens. The citizens can hold position at the government. There are two types of citizens too. There are privileged and non-privileged. The privileged people are the peoples that work in the government like the senators. The non-privileged people are just a normal person that is a citizen. 2.) List the rights of a citizen. How are they different than non-citizens?

The citizens has the right to vote and I guess that the non citizens dont have the rights to vote. 3.) Did the opportunity for social mobility exist in ancient Rome? Money couldnt buy them everything so basicly no. The Roman empire needed new things. Resisting Slavery: 1.) What was the role of a slave in ancient Rome? What rights did they have? They had no successors and that their rebellions achieved nothing of lasting value for the Roman slaves. 2.) What percentage of the population in Rome were slaves? Why do you think this is? It was hard to match the clothes exactly. I chose Augustus because I think he leader that could lead the army well. I didnt choose Nero because I know that he killed a lot of people. He was really violent but I knew that Augustus was a good leader. 2.) After completing the game, how did you do as emperor? They say not quite a lot. I think Im clicking on the wrong choices.
