DESIGN SOFTWARE

MANUFACTURE Dedicated production machinery - manufactured and supported by The Hadley Group ensures product quality and reliability. Individual product marking to customers requirements means easy component recognition. Customers identification marks for Purlin, Rail and Floor Beam sections is accommodated by ink-jet marking. On UltraZED section this is positioned on the section lips which allows assessment of bundle contents without unnecessary separation of the contents. SUPPLY & DESPATCH Special packaging and despatch requirements can be accommodated by arrangement. This includes phasing of deliveries, colour coding and export packaging. Delivery is available anywhere on the UK mainland by road transport.

The Hadley Group is one of Europes leading manufacturers of cold rolled sections and allied products. Operating from purpose built premises in the heart of the industrial West Midlands in the United Kingdom, The Hadley Group of companies are dedicated to the provision of matchless standards of service, quality, innovation and technical expertise. The integration of advanced research and development with in-house tool manufacture and the construction of its own rolling machines has earned The Hadley Group its reputation as a major force in cold roll formed technology. Components designed and engineered by companies within The Hadley Group are manufactured for use in all types of industry from automotive and construction through to aerospace. Advanced computer aided design technology is used in the development and production of a wide range of products setting high standards of performance and reliability.

UltraZED and UltraBEAM sections and accessories are manufactured from re-cycleable steel which is itself manufactured using re-cycled material in accordance with steel industry standards. Bolted and mechanical connections result in environmentally friendly construction methods simplifying and assisting Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) targets for building design.

Roof
SLEEVED SYSTEM
This is the most commonly used Purlin System. It provides a cost effective roofing solution to many building designs including the more complex. The sheeting line is easily varied by using a combination of Purlin depths and extended Cleats. The single spanning lengths, combined with simple fabricated Cleats, contribute to flexibility and to simplification of site handling logistics.

SYSTEMS, CONNECTIONS AND JOINT PLANS

Sleeves required at every joint on the penultimate rafter and alternate joints thereafter. Sections can be supplied as double spanning lengths if required.

DOUBLE SPANNING BUTT-JOINTED SYSTEM

If Double Spanning Purlins are preferred, this system offers the best solution. The virtual elimination of sleeves offers savings in component parts and consequently site erection time.

G NO SLEEVES ARE REQUIRED

(except at alternative joints on the penultimate rafter)

Sleeves required at alternative joints on the penultimate rafter.

NON-CONTINUOUS SYSTEM
For roof structures containing short spans or no continuity of the purlin line, this system is eminently suitable. It is economic and easily detailed and allows a variety of Purlin depths to be used, either over the rafters or between rafter webs. No sleeves required with this system.

SYSTEMS, CONNECTIONS AND JOINT PLANS

HEAVY END BAY SINGLE SPAN SLEEVED SYSTEM

For uncomplicated purlin runs and where spans exceed 8 metres. Single span (standard) sleeved inner bay purlins utilised in conjunction with end bay purlins and sleeves manufactured from heavier section optimise the use of material within a sleeved system configuration.

Heavy gauge end bay purlin and sleeves. Standard sleeves at every joint thereafter - minimum 5 bays.

HEAVY END BAY DOUBLE SPAN SLEEVED SYSTEM

Eminently suitable for uncomplicated purlin runs and spans up to 8 metres, the double spanning inner bay purlins reduce the number of sleeves utilised to that of a conventional sleeved system. However when the double spanning inner bay purlins and standard sleeves are used in conjunction with end bay purlins and sleeves manufactured from heavier section the substantial increase in carrying capacity represents a reduction in cost.

Heavy gauge end bay purlin and sleeves. Standard sleeves at every joint thereafter - minimum 5 bays.

UltraLAP SYSTEM
For long spans and uncomplicated Purlin runs the UltraLAP System with shorter overlap lengths optimise the inherent strength to weight ratio of UltraZED. Easily handled single span lengths are alternately inverted and overlapped to provide a fully continuous Purlin System which offers savings in both material and site erection time.

Alternate Purlins have wide and narrow flanges uppermost. Minimum number of 5 bays.

SLEEVE-LESS SYSTEM SPANS UP TO 12 METRES.

UltraLAP SYSTEM
The UltraLAP System uses Purlins which are alternately inverted, nested together and overlapped to form a continuous beam. The overlaps ensure that a double thickness of material is available to counter high bending moments at the supports. The length of overlap is such that it extends either side of the rafter support to where the maximum internal moment is approximately equal to half the support moment. In the End Bay, where the bending moments are at their greatest, the Purlin is of thicker section and the overlap into the penultimate bay is made longer. Minimum number of bays = 5.

UltraZED CW (weld-on) and CB (bolt-on) Series Cleats are suitable for general roof applications. For steeper roof slopes or where heavy down slope loads are experienced purlin cleats should be checked for suitability and reinforced if required.

CW SERIES CLEATS are mill finish for welding on to steelwork. CB SERIES CLEATS are galvanised finish and are supplied with a fabricated base containing 2 No.18mm holes for mechanical fixing. CW and CB SERIES CLEATS have 6 No. x 14mm holes in their face and are suitable for all purlin systems.

Customers wishing to fabricate their own cleats should ensure their design satisfies the load requirements and the maximum top edge to top hole dimension of 22mm is not exceeded otherwise the cleat will foul the web stiffening element of UltraZED.

SUSPENSION OF SERVICES FROM PURLINS

Where it is required that services are to be suspended from Purlins the preferred method of the attachment is through the section web. However, fixing to the Purlin lower flange (details 1, 2 and 3 above) is usually more convenient and cost effective, the fixing of loads to the lower flange lip is possible, provided certain precautions are taken. Hadley Rolled Products Limited. have concluded from in-house tests on service suspension techniques that the criteria in the following tables should be observed. For Lightweight Service Loads such as electrical, trunking, light fittings or overhead signs, the F.P. series clip for Z Purlins manufactured by W.J. Furse & Co. Ltd. of Nottingham, or ERICO CADDY Clips may be utilised. For suspension of duct work, or heating and ventilation components the CADDY Speed Link by ERICO is available. DRIFTING SNOW CONDITIONS
BS 6399 : Part 3 1988 defines the snow load parameters on roofs from snow drifting against vertical obstructions and in valleys. The high design loads determined by the code can be accommodated by either closing the Purlin spacing in the relevant area or by selecting Purlin sections appropriate to the load conditions. We recommend the use of UltraPRO. Design Software to satisfy the criteria of BS 6399 : Part 3 1988.

DRIFTING SNOW, EAVES AND GUTTER DETAILS

1. INTERNAL GUTTER DETAIL

Eaves Brace Eaves Brace Bracket

USE OF EAVES BEAMS TO SUPPORT GUTTERS

Where cold rolled Eaves Beams are required to support gutters we recommend that consideration is given to the high imposed loads often inherent of gutter systems and the effect these may have on the stability and integrity of the Eaves Beam and its associated component parts. Particular attention should be given to the bracing requirements and we would recommend consultation with our Technical Department.

2. EXTERNAL GUTTER DETAIL

Eaves Brace Eaves Brace Bracket

USE OF PURLINS TO SUPPORT GUTTERS

Where gutters are supported from Purlins by the use of gutter straps, the Purlin should be restrained against twist by the additional use of Eaves Braces or SRS Type Struts. Restraints should be such that the maximum unrestrained length of Purlin does not exceed 2.5 metres. SRS Type Struts should be used where no suitable eaves member is available. Diagram 3 illustrates a possible solution to a hidden gutter detail where restraint to the outboard line of Purlins is difficult to achieve.

PURLIN TIES
Purlin Ties (anti-sag bars) perform two functions:1. To control rotation of the Purlin during wind uplift conditions. 2. To provide a stable working platform for cladding large spans and particularly where deep/heavy/composite cladding is used to achieve satisfaction of current and proposed building regulation requirements. In response to changes resulting from Part L of Building Regulations and future possible changes, maintaining the accuracy of purlin spacing is of paramount importance. Sealing cladding joints to eliminate air leakage, allied to the increasing depth of insulation necessary to achieve the U value performance requirements of Part L means it is critical that purlin twist is minimised and straightness as well as purlin spacing is accurately and consistently maintained. The inclusion of Purlin Ties will assist in this, particularly when an in-situ cladding construction is utilised. Our Purlin and Apex Ties are manufactured from cold roll formed pre-galvanised Steel Channel fitted with corrosion resistant retaining springs combining positive location with ease of use. PURLIN TIE ORIENTATION is dependent upon the method of cladding attachment. See drawing. For Strut and Bracing requirements at Eaves, Valley, in long roof slopes and at the Apex see page 16. Purlin Wind Uplift Capacity is determined by the number of Purlin Ties used per span and the ultimate load capacities are as shown in the published load tables or defined by our computer software. However, the tables below give guidance to the inclusion of Purlin Ties whatever the wind uplift condition. Alternatively, or in addition to the following, it may be that temporary propping/spacing of Purlins is required during the sheeting of the roof. FOR PURLIN WIND UPLIFT CAPACITIES USE UltraPRO. UNRESTRAINED ROOF CONSTRUCTION

Standing seam decking or decking which is deemed to afford little or no restraint to the Purlin top flange requires special consideration. To determine the optimum Purlin section our computer software should be used which takes into account the buckling resistance for the unrestrained Purlin section. Alternatively the published load tables may be utilised, providing SRS Type Struts are included, so that the maximum unrestrained distance between Struts does not exceed 2000mm - Ultimate Wind Uplift Values are as for Ultimate Down Load in this situation. Note:- Where screw fixed rigid liner tray of a thickness greater than 0.3mm (Steel) or 0.5mm (Aluminium) is utilised the Purlin may be designed as fully restrained. If the restraint afforded to the purlins is in doubt consult cladding supplier for confirmation.

Roof
FLAT ROOF < = 3
1. Fix the Purlins as described for the more usual roof slopes, but exercise caution when laying the roof deck and make sure that the roof Purlins are normal to the roof slope before fixing the decking to them. This can be achieved by using Purlin Ties on all spans in excess of 4.5 metres, see page 17. 2. For built up roof design using multi-spanning decking, our solution requires that the Purlins are fixed as opposing pairs and restrained by using supports bolted between Purlin pairs. Diagram 2 illustrates this method. We recommend that the supports are used on all Purlin spans exceeding 5 metres. This ensures that a stable working platform has been constructed and eliminates the need for eaves restraint. PLEASE NOTE: There is a risk of ponding on very shallow roof designs. Some proprietary decking systems have a low deflection tolerance. If specifying cladding which provides little or no restraint to Purlins then refer to Unrestrained Roof Construction page 18.

EAVES CONDITION 1. STRUCTURAL EAVES MEMBER
(NOT COLD ROLLED SECTION) At the bottom of the roof slope a Heavy Duty Eaves Brace as detailed in Fig. 2. should be fitted between the structural eaves member and the first Purlin.

3. NO EAVES MEMBER
At the bottom of the roof slope between the first and second row of Purlins, Diagonal Purlin Brace Assemblies should be fitted in conjunction with SRS Type Struts.

STRUT TYPES
In addition to the proceeding requirements SRS Type Struts are required between Purlins at maximum Strut length of 2000mm.

PURLIN DESIGN
Purlin selection should be made using UltraPRO. Design Software or alternatively by consultation with our technical department. Providing the maximum length of unrestrained Purlin between Struts does not exceed 2 metres the published load tables may be used. It is recommended that deflection is checked to ensure that it does not exceed SPAN/300 under maximum design load.

2. COLD ROLLED EAVES BEAM

At the bottom of the roof slope the Eaves Beam must be connected to the first Purlin by an Eaves Brace as detailed on page 49. Between the first and second rows of Purlins, Diagonal Purlin Brace Assemblies should be incorporated in conjunction with SRS Type Struts.

ADDITIONAL BRACING REQUIREMENTS

On long roof slopes in all of the proceeding cases 1 to 3, additional Diagonal Purlin Brace Assemblies are required so that the distance between bracing methods does not exceed 6 metres.

ROOF SLOPES > 30 AND MANSARD/MONO-PITCH - TIMBER JACK RAFTERS

EAVES CONDITION 1. STRUCTURAL EAVES MEMBER
(NOT COLD ROLLED SECTION) At the bottom of the roof slope a Heavy Duty Eaves Brace, as shown in Fig.2. or similar (by others), should be fitted between the structural Eaves Member and the first Purlin.

ADDITIONAL BRACING REQUIREMENTS

On long roof slopes in the proceeding cases 1 and 2, additional Heavy Duty Tie Bar (HD-DTB) assemblies are required so that the distance between bracing methods does not exceed 3.6 metres.

PURLIN DESIGN
In most cases of tiled roof design the Purlin section is subjected to high down slope loads causing bi-axial loading to the section. Purlin selection should be made using UltraPRO. Design Software or by consultation with our technical department.

STRUT TYPES
When used in conjunction with Heavy Duty Diagonal Tie Bar assemblies - Heavy Duty Type Struts must be used. The SRS Type Strut may be utilised throughout the remainder of the roof construction. Maximum length of Strut for roof slopes over 30 is 1800mm.

2. NO EAVES MEMBER
At the bottom of the roof slope between the first and second row of Purlins Heavy Duty Diagonal Tie Bar (HD-DTB) assemblies and Heavy Duty Type Struts (HDS) should be fitted.

CANTILEVER DETAILS

GABLE END, CANTILEVER AND CLEADER ANGLE

It is possible to cantilever UltraZED Purlins over the gable frame to form a canopy detail providing the following design criteria is adhered to:Purlins should be installed in one continuous length encompassing the penultimate and/or the end bay together with the required overhang and the sheeting must provide full lateral restraint to the Purlin section. It is necessary for the cantilever ends of the Purlin to be restrained against rotation and movement, this is achieved by:1. Fixing Cleader Angle to the top and bottom flanges at the end of the overhang and over the apex. OR 2. Where the cladding does not require cleader a SRS Type Strut should be fitted between Purlins at the end of the overhang and tied over the apex. In both cases if the roof slope exceeds 30 or is of mono-pitch construction a Diagonal Purlin Brace assembly should be used to prohibit down slope movement. DEFLECTION The published load tables limit deflection to not more than SPAN/180. As a consequence the cantilever deflection should also reflect this limitation. The overhang length therefore should be no more than 25% of its backing span, alternatively use UltraPRO. Design Software. For other design cases or heavy loads such as Tiled Roof construction we recommend consultation with our technical department.

SLEEVED SIDE RAIL SYSTEM
The carrying capability of this system exceeds that of the other systems offered, and can be used to carry standard cladding materials. It is possible to accommodate architectural requirements which vary the distance between the face of columns and cladding.

SYSTEMS, CONNECTIONS AND APPLICATIONS

DOUBLE SPANNING BUTT JOINTED RAIL SYSTEM

When building designs allow the use of uninterrupted Rail lengths then this system is preferred because it offers the opportunity of achieving cost savings. Deflection performance of the Side Rail is optimum.

NO SLEEVES ARE REQUIRED

(except at alternative joints on the penultimate columns)

NON-CONTINUOUS SIDE RAIL SYSTEM

This system is normally used for short spans and/or when the specified column face to cladding distance is less than that possible with the other systems. It has the ability to accommodate flush or recessed sheeting lines.

SIDE RAIL SYSTEMS FOR HORIZONTALLY LAID CLADDING

UltraBEAM offers a number of standard systems which are able to accommodate most types of horizontal cladding systems including Composite Panels. SUITABLE FOR HORIZONTAL LAID SHEETING AND COMPOSITE PANELS.

FIREWALL SHEETING RAIL DETAILS
During a fire the outer Cladding Sheet acts as a diaphragm tied back to the columns through an Eaves Beam (or similar structural member) and bottom Sheeting Rail. Excessive bowing due to expansion is minimised by the following:1. All bottom Sheeting Rails must be single spanning although special Sleeves may be introduced to provide continuity for structural considerations. 2. All UltraBEAM/ZED Rails are separated by a 40mm gap to allow for expansion. 3. Special Slotted Cleats to cater for Rail expansion and the additional clearance between Rail joints. 4. All Fixing Bolts should be fitted with a Combustible Washer, which under fire conditions will soften, allowing Rails to expand. 5. GABLE ENDS A structural member acting similar to an eaves beam is required to support the cladding diaphragm in the event of fire.

GENERAL NOTES
The system has been designed for use in a location 1 metre or more from a boundary where fire containment of up to 4 hours is required. OVERALL LENGTH OF SINGLE SPANNING RAILS EQUALS THE SPAN LESS 6mm

Extensive research and development went into the sleeve design, ensuring correct behaviour under all load conditions whilst remaining simple in use. Tests proved that the sleeve profile, section lengths and hole configuration employed in the final design, satisfy these parameters fully. Sleeves are required at every joint on the penultimate column and alternate joints thereafter. Sections can be supplied as double spanning lengths if required.

Side
Column Cleats are common components for both UltraBEAM and UltraZED Side Rails. CW SERIES CLEATS are mill finish for welding on to steelwork. CB SERIES CLEATS are galvanised finish and are supplied with a fabricated base containing 2 No.18mm holes for mechanical fixing. For those wishing to fabricate their own cleats we would point out that the material thickness should be at least that specified for our standard cleats and in cases where heavy cladding material is specified and/or extended Cleats are required they should be checked for suitability of purpose and reinforced if required. Care must be exercised to ensure that dimension A is not exceeded otherwise the web stiffening element of UltraZED sections will foul the Cleat.

RAIL ASSEMBLIES
NB Diagonal Tie Assemblies act as supports to ensure rails remain level prior to and during sheeting. Rails adjacent to the Diagonal Tie Assemblies must be levelled PRIOR to installation of remaining rails. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD DIAGONAL TIE ASSEMBLIES BE USED TO JACK UP RAILS AFTER INSTALLATION. Rails should be propped first and Diagonal Tie Assemblies tightened to MAINTAIN level.T

UltraBEAM and UltraZED Side Rail Systems should be supported and levelled prior to sheeting by one of the following methods:1. Rail spacing should be achieved using Struts supported/levelled by the use of Diagonal Bracing Assemblies as detailed. 2. Rails may be suspended from a suitable Eaves Member - either cold rolled by Hadley Rolled Products Limited (see page 34 and 48 for parameters) or hot rolled by others. 3. Rails may be propped from a suitable safe structure.

Our Tubular Strut offers significant savings in both site time and component cost. The Struts connect together via male and female threaded fasteners, therefore eliminating separate fixing bolt assemblies. Tubular Struts may be used in lieu of our Side Rail Support Struts for 145 to 200 series UltraBEAM/ZED Rails up to 1800mm Rail centres providing the cladding weight is not greater than 0.12 kN/m2 and is screw fixed to provide full restraint.

Struts are fitted nearest to the cladding face through one of a pair of holes punched on the standard gauge line. Struts may be used in compression or tension providing the maximum vertical distance between Tie Wire pairs does not exceed 8 metres when Strut is in compression or 10 metres in tension. It is recommended (but not essential) that Struts are erected male end uppermost with a standard M12 bolt fitted through the lower Rail.

Where counter formed holes are required the Tubular Strut should be substituted with an SRS Type Strut as outlined below. Strut washers need to be fitted either side of the Rail section. When fitting DTW assemblies omit Strut washer. DTW assemblies pairs are fitted one on top of the other between Strut and Rail. No adjustment of Strut length is necessary for DTW assembly inclusion.

SIDE RAIL SUPPORT (SRS)

Where Rail design parameters prohibit the use of Tubular Struts (see table on Page 33) our Side Rail Support Strut Type SRS should be used. Struts for UltraZED and UltraBEAM Rails are manufactured from pre-galvanised cold roll-formed Angle Sections with like Section End Cleats.

All SRS Type Struts are punched at both ends for Diagonal Tie assemblies. No alteration of strut length is required other than when used in conjunction with counter formed holes. For counter formed holes reduce length of strut by 5mm. For ordering details see Standard Order Forms.

NB: Where single Diagonal Tie Assembly connects to a SRS, the end cleat of strut should be adjacent to Diagonal Tie Assembly as shown in photograph. This will help to prevent detachment of the cleat from the strut under any excessive peel load imparted by the Diagonal Tie Assembly.

HEAVY DUTY DIAGONAL TIE BAR (HD-DTB)
Our Heavy Duty Tie Bar System is designed to offer a solution to those design parameters which cannot be satisfied by the DTW Type. HD-DTB assemblies are used extensively where high support loads are encountered and where the support system is an integral part of the finished structure - as with cladding types affording no positive restraint and Tiled Roofs. The HD - DTB assemblies are accurately manufactured from pre-finished materials that ensure reliability in use. All HDS Type Struts are punched at both ends for Diagonal Tie assemblies. No special attention is required to altering the length of struts other than when used in conjunction with counter formed holes. For counter formed holes reduce length of strut by 5mm. HORIZONTAL PANEL CLADDING SYSTEM AND PANEL CONNECTING RAIL - PCR PANEL CONNECTING STRUT - PCS-VR
N.B. CLADDING DETAILS VARY ACCORDING TO MANUFACTURER AND SYSTEM. CLADDING RAIL SYSTEMS SHOWN ARE FOR GENERAL GUIDANCE ONLY. USERS ARE ADVISED TO CHECK THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE PROPOSED CLADDING SYSTEM WITH THE CLADDING MANUFACTURER.

HORIZONTAL PANEL CLADDING

Horizontally laid Cladding Panels require special consideration, particularly at the vertical interface. Our solution is simple, flexible, cost effective and may be used without compromising the design and layout of the main structural framework. Where Cladding detail requires a wide fixing face our Panel Connecting Rail (PCR) or Panel Connecting Strut (PCS-VR) should be utilised. The PCR consists of an UltraBEAM section presented Web outward and connected via the section flanges to ensure a flush cladding face. The PCS-VR is a compound Vertical Rail/Channel assembly which should be used in lieu of a PCR when the section is utilised as a side rail support strut carrying compressive or tensile axial loads, see typical layout drawings 1-4 below. To simplify erection and system detail the PCR and Horizontal Rails connect via a longitudinal two bolt connection spaced to suit the standard 66mm hole centres and therefore may be positioned either at the column face or intermediate positions within the span. The relatively shallow depth of the PCR section allows a diagonal tie system to pass behind - thus facilitating support from the primary structure. For horizontal rail capacity use wind suction value or alternatively use UltraPRO. Design Software. NB: The maximum unrestrained length of Horizontal Rail Section (between supporting VRs, PCRs, PCS-VRs or struts) should be 3.05 metres. To ensure reliable and sustainable performance throughout a buildings design life, the typical design features and mass of horizontal panel cladding requires the provision of a suitable support structure. Consequently, we recommend only Heavy Duty Diagonal Tie Bar (HD-DTB) assemblies should be utilised in conjunction with horizontal panel cladding.

TYPICAL ARRANGEMENTS

TOP HAT PROFILE OVERSAIL SYSTEM

TOP HAT PROFILE OVERSAIL SYSTEM
An alternative to the horizontally laid cladding systems detailed on pages 37 to 41 is one using top hat profile sections (by others). Such a solution may be preferred where vertical rail positions do not approximate with those required to provide strut support for the horizontal rails or the responsibility for them falls upon a third party such as the sheeting contractor. Strut positions are as detailed on page 33 fig.1 to 3 for metal cladding and should be HDS + HD-DTB and SRS Type as illustrated. Top hat sections are available (by others) in varying depths and flange widths for intermediate and panel connecting applications. Top hat sections may be screw fixed using selfdrilling/tapping screws through UltraZED or UltraBEAM horizontal rail flanges. Where accurate alignment of the horizontal rails is necessary the inclusion of our RibLOK2 cleats (below) should be considered. For further advice please contact our Technical Dept.

RibLOK2 CLADDING RAIL ALIGNMENT -25mm

(British Patent Number GB2376729) Suitable for inclusion on refurbishment or new build projects where the chosen cladding system requires accurate alignment of the side rail system RibLOK2 provides the solution. Accurate adjustment of horizontal cladding rails has always required compromise - either by fitting packing pieces, friction grip bolts or site fitted locking methods. By using the RibLOK2 Cleat system UltraBEAM Horizontal Rails are laterally adjustable during the erection process by up to 25mm*/** and alignment is within 1.5mm of the required datum. RibLOK2 eliminates reliance on friction necessary in conventional methods. Once the required datum has been achieved RibLOK2 provides a positive locking system capable of carrying lateral loads even when not fully tightened. However, all bolt connections should be fully tightened in accordance with standard site practice, increasing the lateral load carrying capacity. NB: RibLOK2 consists of Locking Washer and Cleat only. For load carrying capacities of the UltraBEAM please refer to published load tables or UltraPRO. Design Software. *Maximum adjustment of 145mm & 170mm deep UltraBEAM section is +/-15mm. **Maximum adjustment of 200-285mm deep UltraBEAM section is +/-25mm. For further advice please contact our Technical Dept. Where column restraints are required they should be ordered punched one end only for final drilling on-site after rails have been adjusted.

VERTICAL CLIP-FIXED CLADDING

VERTICAL CLIP-FIXED CLADDING

The detail shown offers a simple method of construction which incorporates UltraBEAM Horizontal Rails with Vertical Heavy Duty Struts between the bottom pair of Rails. This type of fixing requires all vertical load to be carried via the Bottom Rail, therefore Heavy Duty Type Struts are essential. To determine load carrying capacities of UltraBEAM Side Rails reference should be made to the relevant published load tables and adjusted as follows: The Wind Pressure capacity of Rails used with Clip Fixed Cladding should be reduced by 10%. The Bottom Rail capacity should be reduced by 50%.

WINDOW TRIMMERS
UltraBEAM sections provide a reliable, cost effective and simple solution to the trimming requirements of windows and doors. Available with pre-punched Counter Formed Holes to accept Counter Sunk Headed Bolts, a surface free of bolt head protrusion facilitates ease of fitting for all types of window and door frames. UltraBEAM Counter Formed Hole design allows for Counter Formed connection details devoid of packing pieces which offers cost savings in reduced components and site logistics. THE WINDOW SILL RAIL requires bracing against the high torsional loads imposed by the weight of the window both during fitting and when the building is in use after building occupation. This is achieved through consideration of a number of inter-related factors including Window Type, Weight and Side Cladding. SINGLE UNIT WINDOWS are those requiring Vertical Trimmer Rails for their installation and it is these Vertical Trimmers which in addition to the Support Struts help to restrain the Horizontal Rail. RIBBON WINDOWS are designed as continuous units and eliminate the need for Vertical Trimming Rails, as a consequence additional strutting to the Sill Rail may be required. For Ribbon type windows additional Diagonal Tie Assemblies to support the window head rail may be required. STRUT PARAMETERS for both types of Window by type and weight, together with consideration for the support afforded by the cladding is detailed below. Alternatively use UltraPRO. Design Software. TYPICAL GLAZING WEIGHTS are listed within the published Load Tables. Where the Window Weight is uncertain it is usual to assume an approximate weight of 24kg/m 2 (0.23 kN/m2) for Double Glazed Units - based on 4mm thick glass.

WINDOW TRIMMERS
WINDOW TRIMMERS
Vertical Window Trimmers are of the same section as Horizontal Rail Members and are connected together by simple Cleats which allow for general tolerances to be taken into account. The Window Head Rails require bracing with a SRS Type Strut. Where Ribbon Windows are to be installed the addition of Diagonal Tie Assemblies over the Window Head Rail may be necessary. Selection of Horizontal Side Rails above and below window openings should take into account the deflection limitations of the Window Frame, Glazing and correct operation of the window in use.

DOOR TRIMMERS AND BRICKWORK RESTRAINTS

When the Vertical Door Trimming Sections require bolting to a finished floor a method of building tolerance adjustment within the connection should be considered, such as Slotted Cleats.

Vertical Door Trimmers should be of the same section depth as the Horizontal Rails and material thickness should be selected with consideration to the type, weight and use of the door.

BRICKWORK RESTRAINTS
UltraBEAM sections may be utilised to provide restraint to masonry walls. Sections may be chosen as single members or as Compound Pairs depending upon the imposed design loads. Correct UltraBEAM selection should be taken from the published deflection limited load table with the carrying capacity of Compound Beams being twice that shown for single members. Should the restraint rail be of differing size to the adjacent Side Rail the use of a Tubular Strut in lieu of a SRS or HD Series Strut may simplify detailing provided the Diagonal Bracing System is fitted above the adjacent Rail and the Tubular Strut is in tension. Brickwork Restraint Beams may be fixed to the wall construction by use of Threaded Rod built into the wall, Bent Flat Straps, Shot Fired Fasteners or Proprietary Anchor Bolts. Fixing centres of Restraint Ties are determined by the construction of the wall. For further advice and information on the use of UltraBEAM Sections as brickwork restraints please contact our Technical Department. We recommend the use of UltraPRO. Design Software for the selection of Brickwork Restraints.

SIDE RAIL SUPPORT HANGER ASSEMBLY

Hadley Rolled Products Eaves Beams may be utilised to support 145-200 Series Side Cladding Rails via our Side Rail Support Hanger Assembly. The Hanger Bracket and Tubular Strut which combine to make up the assembly are connected to the lower flange of the Eaves Beam by a M12 Bolt. The Hanger Bracket has slotted holes which facilitate the differing gauge line back marks for the 145/170 and 200 Series Side Rails. Suitable for use with screw fixed metal cladding up to 0.12kN/m2 the Support Hanger Assembly may be used without recourse to the use of an Eaves Beam Stiffener Cleat providing the height of the supported cladding does not exceed 6 metres. Where cladding height exceeds 6 metres, up to a maximum height of 10 metres, a Web Stiffener Cleat is required bolted to the Eaves Beam Web via M12 Counter Sunk Headed Bolts. The Eaves Brace length should be shortened by 5mm when used in conjunction with a Web Stiffener Cleat.

An Eaves Brace as detailed should be fitted between the Eaves Beam and the first row of Purlins - one Brace at mid span is required up to 6.1m span and two number for spans over 6.1 - 10m at 13 and 23 positions. The design of UltraBEAM Eaves Beam means the need for packing pieces between the Eaves Brace Bottom Bracket and the Section Web is eradicated. The connection between the Strut and the Bottom Bracket affords restraint to the Eaves Beam against rotation - especially when utilising an Eaves Beam to support external gutters. In all cases the working load tables as published require the Eaves Beam to be connected to the first Purlin by an Eaves Brace which acts to limit rotation of the Eaves Beam and to transmit Horizontal Wind Load through the diaphragm action of the roof. 1 Eaves Brace at mid-span up to 6.1 metres. 2 Eaves Braces at 13 and 23 points over 6.1 - 10 metres.

Standard order forms for detailing UltraBEAM Sections are available.

SUSPENDED CEILING PRIMARY SUPPORT BEAMS

FOR CLEATED END SUPPORT CONNECTION

UltraBEAM Section should be fixed as opposing pairs with lateral restraint afforded by either our SRS Type Strut fitted between pairs or by screw fixing (2 number screws per connection) our 45 x 45 Cleader Angle to the top flange of all adjacent sections. Maximum unrestrained length of section is 3000mm in both cases.

FOR SUSPENDED SUPPORT CONNECTION (without fixed cleat)

UltraBEAM Section should be fixed as opposing pairs but in this case lateral support is required at maximum 2000mm centres along the Beam length. In ALL cases the Lateral Supports must be secured to a structural member, perimeter wall or braced with opposing pairs of DTW assemblies to prevent movement of the ceiling grid. Our Technical Department will be pleased to advise on the selection and use of UltraBEAM ceiling grid support sections. These cleats are available in two formats - MFS (short) and MFL (long) which satisfies all common primary beam flange widths. To optimise floor joist selection the designer may specify different UltraBEAM joist depths to suit varying span and/or load criteria within adjacent floor areas. This is possible because all 255 - 305 series cleats have a slotted centralised hole which allows different joist depths to be installed via common bolt holes (see table on page 54 for allowable joist depth combinations).

FLANGE FIXED SYSTEM
UltraBEAM Floor joist sections may be fixed directly to support structures by bolting through the bottom flange. Carrying capacity is reduced due to limitations imposed by web crushing, however this system does offer some advantages due to fewer component parts and simplified end connections especially for refurbishment projects where on site adjustments may be necessary. Use UltraPRO. Design Software to select Flange Fixed Floor beams. For double spanning joists where spans vary >10% consult Hadley Rolled Products technical department.

MASONRY CONNECTIONS
GENERAL
UltraBEAM Floor joists should be designed as opposing pairs tied at mid-span as shown on page 53 prior to the laying of Floor Decking. Floor Decking must be securely fixed with Self Tapping or similar screws in accordance with Decking Manufacturers recommendations so that lateral restraint is afforded to the UltraBEAM top (compression) flange at no more than 1000mm maximum fastener spacing. All fixing Connection Bolts to be plated M12 Grade 8.8 set screws with 2 number washers fitted unless Counter Sunk Headed Bolts are used. If primary structural steel requirements call for lateral restraint to be provided to the lower flange of primary members our Rafter/Column Restraints may provide a solution - for further assistance contact our technical department. Deflection should be considered with sympathy for use to which the floor may be subjected - both as a ratio of span and for dimensional movement on large spans. UltraBEAM sections may be fixed either through web connections or flange fixed with their design capacity being taken from the relevant load tables or design software. For double spanning joists where spans vary >10% consult Hadley Rolled Products technical department. When connecting UltraBEAM sections to existing walls one of the methods detailed may be employed and the structure checked for suitability and safety. Consideration should be given to ensuring that all Beams are level and some form of adjustment may be desirable.

Floor
Where end connections are required to be within the depth of the Floor Beam section - for example to accept a directly fixed ceiling the details shown in fig.1 may be considered. For walls under construction the detail shown in fig. 6 offers a more traditional method of end connection using face fixed Angle Ties which are bolted in position after the Beam has been built into the wall under construction. The end of the Beam built into the wall should be set on a suitable padstone and protected against chemical attack with a suitable barrier finish. Where UltraBEAM sections are required to oversail walls, figures 2 and 3 show typical construction methods. If a flange fixed solution is chosen the contact area of the section with the padstone should be protected with a suitable barrier against corrosive attack by chemical reaction.
