Unfortunately, some teachers still use old method in teaching reading, the teacher only give a passage of the best then ask the students to read and translate it. It can make the students boring in studying English. Base on discussion above, the writer chooses the title Increasing students reading ability by using Jigsaw method (an experimental study at the first year students of SMP Negeri 2 Indra Jaya, Pidie).

2. Research Question To address foresaid retionales, the research question is : 2.1. Can teaching by using cooperative learning improve students reading ability? 3. The objective of the Study The objective of the this research is : 3.1. To identify how far cooperative learning improve students reading ability. 4. Hypothesis The hypothesis of this research is 4.1. Teaching by using cooperative learning improve students reading ability.

5. The Scope of the Study Limiting the scope of the study is required, in order to enable the writer to analyze and discuss the problem more deeply. Thus, in this case the writer concerned only on the improving the students ability in SMP Negeri 2 Indra Jaya in reading comprehension by using cooperative learning.

6. The significance of the Study This study will give useful contribution for the English teachers at SMP Negeri 2 Indra Jaya in improving the students reading ability. By using cooperative learning method will help themselves and the students of SMP Negeri 2 Indra Jaya take inventory of what they already know and what they want to know about the subject. Students can categorize information about the topic that they expect to use.

The operational of Key Term To clarify the meaning of some terms of this study is important to avoid

misunderstanding of the matter. Especially those words appeared in the title improving. Students reading Ability by Using cooperative learning. A. Improving Improving means the students ability can become better or good progress in reading comprehension by following the steps suggested in cooperative learning.

B. Reading comprehension Reading comprehension is the manner of the readers which receive and process new information from the next and the degree to which they must relate what is new to what is already known. C. Ability In general ability is the quality of being able to do something, especially the physical, mental, financial, or legal power to accomplish something, a natural or acquired skill or talent, the quality of being suitable or receptive to a specified treatment. D. Using Using is a state of being able to need or to do something in order to make him, her, or it useful, functional, or beneficial. E. Cooperative Learning Cooperative learning is a succesfull teaching strategy in which small teams, each with students of different levels of ability use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. Each member of a team is responsible not only for learning what is taught but also for helping teanimates learn, thus creating an atmosphere of achievement.

8. Research Methodology 8.1. Research Design This research is experimental study with some additional data to support the result. This is intended to obtain information on improving studets reading ability by using cooperative learning. Experimental research is important to society. It is typically carried out by manipulating a variables, is measured. In this case, the independent variable in this research is using cooperative learning, and the dependent variables is teaching reading. This study tries to prove whether there is a difference in the developing of students reading skill especially as a method at SMP Negeri 2 Indra Jaya, Pidie, and to compare the result of teaching reading by using jigsaw (an experimental group) with grammar translation method (control group) for the first year students of SMP Negeri 2 Indra jaya, Pidie.

9. Population and Sample 9.1. Population The target population of the study is all of the first year students of SMP Negeri 2 Indra Jaya , Pidie. 9.2. Population To ensure that the sample is representative, the ideal solution is to select samples from target population. Here, the researcher will take one class as sample. There are II4. Consist of 26 students, including 15 girls and 11 boys.

10. Instruments use in gathering data The instruments are used in collecting the data in this research are observation, pre-test and post-test. 1. Observation The method will be used to observe the teaching-learning process and the students activities. 2. Pre-test After the observation, students are given the pre-test. Pre test is the first activity before the teacher-learning activities and post test. Pre-test is given to students, either for the manipulated (experimental group) and non manipulated classes (control group), in the beginning of the term (before the treatment is given). 3. Post-test Post-test is given at then end of meeting to experimental group when the treatment given. The test in used in order to see whether the treated students improve or not. Post-test is given at the end of the term, (after 4 times teaching learning process). The test is given to both classes. This test is done in order to evaluate reading ability of the students in English after being manipulated using cooperative learning method as strategy in teaching. The topic of the tests is the same to the pre-test and the way of scoring is the same.
