Discipleship Our Goal

We will look at discipleship as the process by which we become followers of Jesus and, as such, better soul-winners.

Discipleship Lesson 10, March 8

Discipling the Nations

Discipling the Nations Key Text

Isaiah 56:7 NKJV

For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.

Discipling the Nations Initial Words

Jesus, the Desire of all nations, was not to be limited to a single group. Christs followers would transcend national boundaries, international conflicts, language differences, and other difficulties, because He had established the pattern of crosscultural evangelism.

Discipling the Nations Quick Look

1. Foretold By the Prophets (Micah 4:1, 2) 2. Exemplified By Jesus (John 12:20-32) 3. Commissioned By God (Matthew 28:19, 20)

Discipling the Nations 1. Foretold By the Prophets

Micah 4:1, 2 NKJV

Now it shall come to pass in the latter days that eh mountain of the Lords house shall be established. Many nations shall come say, Come, and let us goto the House of God He will teach us His ways, and we shall walk in His paths. For out of Zion the law shall go forth.

1. Foretold By the Prophets Gentile Conversions

Ancient prophets foretold the conversion of non-Jewish people (Gentiles) to a scripturally based faith. Israels commission was to broadcast Gods universal invitation to the surrounding nations.

1. Foretold By the Prophets Gentile Conversions

Israel was to be the light of the nations. Seeing the wonderful advantages that the Israelites had, heathen nations would inquire about the Israelites monotheistic faith, and thus many of them would be converted to the true God.

1. Foretold By the Prophets Gentile Conversions

Modern Christians face a similar challenge. Will they sacrificially invest in furthering the gospel, or will they become inwardly focused, forgetting their larger purpose? Our burden for the regions beyond can never be laid down until the whole earth shall be lightened with the glory of the Lord.Testimonies 6:28, 29.

1. Foretold By the Prophets Gentile Conversions

Christ wanted His own people to wake up to what their true calling and purpose was as a people; to see that salvation, even for them was not something that a person is born into. It was something that requires a conscious choice to accept, a choice that even those who werent of Israel could, and did, make.

Discipling the Nations 2. Exemplified By Jesus

John 12:20-26

And there were certain Greeksthat came up to worship at the feast. The same came to Philipsaying, Sir, we would see Jesus. And Jesus answered them,If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my

2. Exemplified By Jesus We Would See Jesus

Among the crowd assembling for Passover were Greek worshipers. Notice their words to Philip, Sir, we would see Jesus. In other words, they wanted to see Jesus. They wanted to be with Him. They wanted to learn from Him.

2. Exemplified By Jesus We Would See Jesus

What a testimony to the universal character of Christ and His message! Jesus granted these men their wish. Notice what He said to them: If any man, meaning any man, woman, Jew, or Greek, wanted to follow Him, they could, but it would come at a cost.

2. Exemplified By Jesus Breaking Down Barriers

Israels leaders found it unthinkable that Jesus would consider teaching Greeks. Jesus countered by emphasizing character above ethnic origin. He used the story of a Samaritan to teach what it meant to fulfill Gods law. A rebuke to all who scorn someone in need because the person is not of their own ethnic background.

Discipling the Nations 3. Commissioned By God

Matthew 28:19, 20 NKJV

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

3. Commissioned By God Into the World

Gods final work is incomplete until the eternal gospel expressed in the message of the three angels found in Revelation 14 has crossed every racial, ethnic, national, and geographical boundary. Gods triumph and its proclamation are assured.

3. Commissioned By God Into the World

This must happen, but who will offer themselves as Gods channels of grace? Who will join Christ in the overturning of the racial, ethnic, and language barriers? Who will empty their wallets and pocketbooks? Who will sacrifice earthly comforts and family associations in order to advance heavens cause?

3. Commissioned By God Into the World

Our missionary success has been fully proportionate to our selfdenying, self-sacrificing effort. God alone can estimate the work accomplished as the gospel message has been proclaimed in clear, straight lines. Thousands have been brought to a knowledge of the truth as it is in Jesus.Testimonies 6:28.

Discipling the Nations Final Words

A certain Samaritancame where the sufferer was, and when he saw him, he had compassion on him. He did not question whether the stranger was a Jew or a Gentile. Thus the question, Who is my neighbor? is forever answered. Our neighbor is every person who needs our help. The Desire of Ages 503.
