range covers applications for polymeric cables

Stress controI materiaIs
Raychem has formulated a new electrical
stress control material, which is based on
Raychem's experience in ceramic
semiconductor technology (ZnO). The
ZnO stress control system is integrated in
a heatshrinkable insulating tubing. t fills
any irregularities, bonds to the insulation
and achieves excellent electrical
performance.

Product range
The product line is designed for polymer
cables from 10 to 800mm2 and up to
36kV. This coverage is achieved with a
minimum number of design variants.

InsuIation materiaIs
The materials used in the XSU-F/
OXSU-F termination generation have
undergone many years of development,
yielding a polymeric material with excep-
tional electrical and weathering proper-
ties. The formulation is based on proven
polymer compounds, exhibiting excellent
stability and long-term performance over
several decades under severe environ-
mental conditions.

The Raychem EFSJ-11 series oI
joints has been designed to combine
the best Ieatures oI compound Iilled
joints with modern materials and
heat-shrinkable technology. The
joint is robust and can be energised
immediately aIter installation. Each
kit covers a range oI cable sizes.

The basic kits are designed Ior lead
(PILC) cables with either screened
or belted
construction.

ModiIication kits may be added Ior
paper to plastic transition, 3-core
and single core triIurcating joints.

Raychem mechanical earth
connection kits can be added to
eliminate the need Ior
plumbing.

Additional kits are available Ior
aluminium sheathed (PICAS) cables
iI required.*

Extensive testing and experience
The EFSJ-11 series has been thoroughly type tested using relevant
sections Irom several industry approved joint standards such as engi-
neering recommendation C90, VDE and IEC. Test report UVR81 10
summarizes the tests. The joints have been installed in most areas
where MIND cables are prevalent such as UK, Malaysia, Hong
Kong, Australia, New Zealand, India and Sri Lanka.

Typical shield wire cross sections up to
35mm can easily be connected with
the mechanical connector supplied in
the kit. Positioned at the oversheath cut
back, the connection provides a smooth
proIile and resists mechanical damage.
An additional layer oI copper mesh is

satisIactory shielding and protection.
Elastomeric insulation and
screen
The heat shrinkable conductive
layer oI the screened elastomeric
joint component holds the elas-
tomeric insulation layer in its ex-
panded stage when supplied. This
enables the usage oI a wide range

with shear head bolts to ensure a
reliable pre-engineered electrical

The stress control tubing at each
cable end in combination with the
yellow stress grading mastic at
the screen cut provide a precisely
deIined impedance characteristic
which smooths the electrical
Iield. For ease oI installation, a
stress control patch is applied
around the mechanical connector
to provide a similar Iunction.

Robust outer sealing and
Protection
The thick-wall heat-shrinkable
tubing is internally coated with a
hot melt adhesive to ensure a
eIIective moisture seal and corro-
sion protection Ior the joint.
When installed, the joints provide
the similar level oI protection and
thickness as modern cable with
PE oversheath.

1. Screened body
A thick-walled moulded conductive
outer screen is permanently bonded to
the silicone rubber insulating material
oI the body

2. Inner screen
A conductive inner layer, as a Iaraday
cage around the compression or me-
chanical lug, prevents corona at rated
voltage.

3. Compression or mechanical lugs
Specially designed DIN compression
lugs and mechanical lugs with shear
bolts Ior connecting either aluminium
or copper conductor cables.

4. Stress cone adaptor
Relieves electrical stress at the point
where the cable screen is cut. The in-
sulated section extending beyond the
wire shielding, provides a convenient
point Ior oversheath testing.

5. Earthing eye and ground lead
Provides a connection point Ior
earthing the screen

6. Threaded pin
A threaded pin together with a spring
washer and hex nut ensure a high-
perIormance electrical and mechanical
contact with the bushing.

7. Rear plug with test point
Removable rear plug is used with ca-
pacitive test point.

8. Test point
The test point is used to determine
whether the circuit is energised; alter-
natively it can be used Ior phasing.

9. Conductive end cap
Electrical screen and protection oI the
rear end oI the separable connector.

STAND OFF INSULATORS
The EPBI insulator is a lightweight polymeric design comprising
a high strength Ilexible core covered by an elastomeric shedded
insulation. This high voltage insulation is bonded to the core

ARMOUR EARTHING
Wire armours on paper or plastic cables can be eIIectively termi-
nated to earth by means oI mechanical clamping rings.
For paper cables and earth is provided in the kit to bond the armours
and lead sheath. The kits are ordered separately.
