"1 am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God..Acts 26:28

Dearest Friends & Family, We're all familiar with the metaphor depicted in the picture above, "Reach for the stars!" Perhaps we can even remember being challenged by a teacher, pastor, or motivational speaker to set a goal beyond ourselves and strive to reach it. We began the New Year at Kaohsiung Good News Christian Church being challenged to "Dream for the Kingdom of God." Surprisingly enough, there are a good number of scriptures which encourage us as God's people to trust Him to do things that are on/y imaginable to us. (Cf. Eph. 1:19; 3:20)
Just the idea of God's plan to save the world is almost unimaginable! He penetrated our existence in the person of Jesus 2000 years ago and continues to do so today by His Spirit. He's in the business of doing amazing things because it takes amazing things to bring about the change He wills for this dying world. The most incredible thought is that His desire is to use us to do it all. The trick for us, then, is to remember that we are but servants and tools for His use. Paul referred to us as "ordinary clay pots," encouraging us to never forget that the incomparable power for accomplishing the amazing things we see happen is His and not ours. There's no power in the pot, only in the Potter. (II Cor. 4:7)

Kingdom News
So far this year, we've seen the Holy Spirit lead our church into some new areas of spiritual growth. At the same time we've been trying to articulate this new direction and put it down in some concrete written form to serve as a map for the future. This is what we call our "church ministry plan." Each time we think we've figured it out, something new happens and it becomes clear that we hadn't figured it out yet! This keeps life challenging, though -- seeing the Holy Spirit work and learning to get with His program! We've revamped our Cells. They were great for "fellowship," but had ceased to be evangelistic and weren't getting people into the Word much either. We've decided we need two kinds of Cells, one for training & equipping believers to become "disciple makers," and one for reaching out to nonbelievers. The first we're calling an "Equipping Cell" with emphasis on Bible study, with time still for sharing, ministry, and prayer. The second has its emphasis completely on evangelism and relationship building, and is free to do whatever it wants, whenever, wherever ~ thus the name "Open Cell." We're off to a good start and are encouraged by the enthusiastic effort our people are putting forth. We also have cells just for leaders, called G-12s. We're busy, but growing! Kathy took five of our ladies to Singapore this March for more training in discipling leaders through Groups of 12, and to attend an "Encounter." An Encounter is a two-day intensive experience where a new

believer's faith is grounded, and where all participants are helped to 'encounter God' in dealing with sin and unresolved issues from their past. We're planning to incorporate the Encounter as a regular part of our church's annual ministry plan. Our ladies returned from Singapore tremendously helped and motivated to be intentional disciple makers. Their spirit has since been infectious throughout the entire church, as we've seen more people won to the Lord and more of our own people ministering to others in need. As of Mother's Day, we've had 11 baptisms this year.
Taiwan is an extremely exciting place to be these days. The church, as a whole, is on the move. There's a beautiful spirit of cooperation among Christians across denominational lines. They are burdened for their nation. The Kingdom is coming! History is being made politically as God brings down some and raises up others to be in authority. Whatever happens, we are all in His hands. And that's the best place to be!

--Sugar & Spice & Everything Nice

The really BIG news around our house these days is the adoption of a 2y2-year-old little sister/daughter, depending on whom you're talking to. Now even Kurt is a "big brother" and Kathy & 1are parents of a beautiful, charming little girl. She came to us last October, having been removed from her extremely dysfunctional home by Taiwan's Social Services. Her parents, one unwilling and one unable to care for her, agreed to give-her up for adoption. In the process of helping The Home of God's Love in LoTung, Taiwan process her paper work here in Kaohsiung, Kathy came up with the ridiculous notion that perhaps she need not go to live at the orphanage. The boys all agreed. Outnumbered, it finally occurred to me that perhaps 1just needed to trust God on this one. I eventually joined the consensus on the grounds that

there would be no dollies, or tea parties, and that words like "punkin" and "precious" would never have to
enter my vocabulary. At this writing, I regret to inform you that all of the above abominations have in fact come to pass. The little "heart worm" has infected me and I am often found wrapped and twisted around her little finger, which is embarrassing to admit. She's been sitting on my lap since she arrived - that's why it's taken me 7 months to write this letter. She became officially and irrevocably ours on April 30th,
2004. We're stuck with each other!

Hugs

Yeah! I have a little sister! Micah and Jenna --

Iam sending you to them to open theireyes and turn them fromdarknessto light, and fromthe power ofSatan to God..Acts 26:28

Dearest Friends & Family, Yes, we're hereKathy, Nick, Kurt & Jenna landed in June, and Micah & Chuck with Wayne Lee in July. Wayne brought greetings from our church in Kaohsiung to both of our families. It was fun showing him our 'American home'. It's great to be back in the States for a while. We had a wonderful summer spent mostly with family and then put on some serious miles in August right before the boys all started school. Our "other daughter," co-worker Angi Davis's wedding reception in Michigan was one enjoyable Congratulations, Angi! 1 love you! stop. It feels good to have our bags unpacked now (except for weekend travel) and to be settled temporarily into our "furlough" house. It's in Tulsa about 4 blocks from Chuck's folks, who aren't minding having the grandkids within walking distance at all!

Our "road work" during this home assignment is being done quite comfortably in what Jenna calls "Daddy's Truck." An elder in one of our supporting churches (who would probably like to remain anonymous) generously and sacrificially bequeathed upon us his very own Suburban for the duration of our furlough. There's plenty of room for all 6 of us and the gear that seems to follow us around. We feel very blessed and are so thankful!

Meanwhile, Back At The Ranch

We're hearing good news from "home" - our "children" are doing well carrying on the work of the Lord in
our absence. Here's a recent comment from our co-worker, John Dunn: 'Toby Li and some of our other people are truly stepping up... in leading our church. Toby is doing a great job of trying to keep our people focused on .. the mission of our church."

Fterhaps you can imagine the sense of fulfillment and joy we have when we hear that our people are "stepping up" and moving forward without us! This is every missionary-church planter's dream. Toby is one of our Cell Leaders who has proven himself to be competent and trustworthy. Needless to say, we've had our eye on him for some time now and are praying that God will guide him to pastor this church. Be praying with us!
The church is growing, too. In fact, they've even had a few baptisms since we left. Kathy and I are now

having the incredibly great privilege of seeing with our own eyes, our own spiritual children "giving birth," if you will, to their own spiritual children and raising them up in the Lord. I guess that makes us grandparents! We don't mind growing old in the Lord if this is what it means! Please be praying for the church In Kaohsiung as we formally hand them the leadership baton during our next term of service in Taiwan.

The Next Adventure

So what do church planters do when their church is planted and has taken root? Often they go somewhere else and do it again. Kathy & I believe the Lord wants us to stay involved in church planting, by helping
other church planters. An opportunity has opened up for us to become mentors of other missionaries in Asia, sharing our experience and teaching from our successes and mistakes. We have been praying about this for some time now and the Lord is confirming that this is His idea at every turn. We will be assuming the position of "Field Coordinator" with Team Expansion upon our return to Taiwan next February. As

"FCs," we will be involved in far more church plants in Asia, than if we tried to repeat the process on our own. Our basic job description as Field Coordinators will be to help young missionaries, some just starting out like we did nearly 20 years ago, be the best missionaries they can be and plant the most vibrant churches they possibly can. We are extremely excited about this new challenge. It seems to be the most logical "next phase" for us, and the best thing we can do with all that the Lord has taught us. Our initial fields of
responsibility will be Taiwan, China, Mongolia, and Thailand. We will base our work out of Taiwan this next term, near the missionaries we will be helping. Pray for God's wisdom and insight into the work of our missionary colleagues, and sensitivity to their needs as front line soldiers for Christ.

Family Affairs
Kathy & 1are really enjoying a little change of pace. We're still busy corresponding with Taiwan and speaking at
our supporting churches on weekends, but it's good to have a break from the pressures of daily ministry. I've been doing a little fishing ~ even caught a 6-pound bass! Kathy has enjoyed spending time with her family in Iowa and will be helping her mother through recovery and rehab from a hip replacement this fall. Micah has settled well into college life at Ozark Christian College in Joplin, MO. He feels as if the Lord is smiling down on him .... His roommate turned out to be the son of a good friend of ours when we were at Ozark. They both made the basketball team and are enduring rigorous conditioning in preparation for the
season. Many other
students have befriended Micah and made him

feel quite welcome. It's been a great transition to

American life for him.

He's doing well and enjoying his classes.

We're SO thankful!!!

Nick & Kurt are enjoying 9th and 7th grade respectively and, like big bro, are looking forward to - you guessed it ~
basketball season! With 3 different teams and

schedules to follow, 1

have a feeling Kathy & 1 are going to be warming

a lot of bleachers this fall. Proud Father and sons with a summer day's catch.

Jenna Marie ... where do I start... let me just say that our family has changed. Life is not as smooth as it was now that we care for a 3-year-old. But we have the cutest, smartest, most loving little girl in the
world! This summer she was awarded "Most

Outgoing" of all the toddlers at the Crawford County

Fair in Denison, lA! She has a will of iron and a smile that can melt your heart. Her favorite word is "Daddy." She's promised me she will never get married. Her 2nd two favorite words are "Mommy" & "Shopping." Kathy is utterly delighted that her

daughter is also a tireless shopper!
