Bernoulli and the Free Jet

Objectives
In this laboratory you will measure fluid velocities in a free jet using a stagnation tube. You will confirm that the Bernoulli equation can be used to measure fluid velocities using a simple stagnation tube.

Theory
The conservation of mechanical energy will be verified using the Bernoulli equation.

p V2 + +z=C 2g
A stagnation tube will be connected to a pressure sensor. The stagnation tube will be filled with water prior to connecting to the pressure sensor and the pressure sensor output will be eroed with the stagnation tube held vertically !in the same orientation used for ta"ing measurements.# Thus the pressure sensor will measure the pressure at the stagnation point !$igure #. $rom the Bernoulli equation we can obtain the following relationship.

p% V2 p V2 + z% + % = 2 + z 2 + 2 2g 2g
&oint % is on a vertical line in the jet immediately upstream from the stagnation point' point 2. The stagnation pressure' p2 ' will be measured using a pressure transducer. (ince are ero and z% z2 we can obtain

p% V2 and 2 2g

V% =

2 p2

Thus by measuring the stagnation pressure we can calculate the velocity of the jet !$igure #.
