Detailed Lesson Plan in Horticulture Sorsogon State College School of Agriculture

I.

Objectives At the end of the lesson the students are expected to: Describe the structure of roots, stems and leaves Describe the functions of roots stems and leaves Explain some unique adaptations of roots, stems and leaves

II.

Subject Matter A. Topic: Parts of a complex plants B. Materials: Plant C. References: Life Science (Merrill-Texas Edition)

III.

Procedure A. Motivation: What is the importance of plants? B. Presentation: Roots Have vascular tissue to move water and minerals from the ground up through the stems to the leaves. Anchor plant in soil Store food Root tissues may also perform special function such as absorption of oxygen and the process of photosynthesis Stems The main functions of a stem are to support the above ground parts of the plant and to allow movements of materials between leaves and roots Some stems also have adaptations that allow them to store food

Three main tissues make up the vascular system in the roots, stems and leaves: Xylem: tissue made up of tubular vessels that transport water and minerals up from the roots throughout the plant Phloem: is a plant tissue made up of tubular cells that move food from leaves and stems, where it is made, to other parts o the plant for direct use on storage. In short it transports sugars throughout plant. Cambium: is a tissue that produces new xylem and phloem cells. Leaves Are the plants organs hat usually trap light and make food for the plant though the process of photosynthesis. Epidermis: is a thin layer of cells hat covers and protects both the upper and lower surfaces of a leaf. A waxy cuticle that protects the plant from wilting or drying out covers the epidermis of many leaves. Stomata: it is another adaptation of leaves are small pores in the leaf surfaces, it is also allow carbon dioxide, water and oxygen to enter and leave a leaf. He stomata are surrounded by guard cells that open and close the pores Stomata, cuticle and guard cells all are adaptation that enabled plants to survive on land by conserving water. Palisadess cells: are packed with chloroplasts filled with chlorophyll. Spongy layer: located between palisade cells and lower epidermis. Xylem and phloem vessels are located in this layer. IV. Evaluation 1-3. What are the three main tissues that make up the vascular system in the roots, stems and leaves. 4. It is a plant organ that usually traps light and make their food through the process of photosynthesis. 5. It is anchored plants in soil.
