Instructors Name: Colleen Annicelli Course: Physics Honors Period 4 Date: 11/16/2012 Part I: Lesson Title: Projectiles Launched

at an Angle Mastery Objective: Students will be able to Describe the motion of a projectile launched at an angle by treating horizontal and vertical components of its position and velocity. Quantitatively analyze the motion of a projectile launched at an angle (apply the kinematics formulas). Predict and confirm how varying initial conditions effect a projectile path. Goals of Lesson: Students will use a computer simulation, a hands-on experience, and a problem solving experience to deepen their conceptual understanding of the motion of a projectile launched at an angle. Essential Questions: What factors influence the hang time and horizontal range of a projectile? How can the horizontal and vertical components of motion be used to quantitatively analyze projectile motion? State Standards: Physical Setting/Physics Standard 4 Key Idea 5: Energy and matter interact through forces that result in changes in motion. Performance Indicator 5.1: Explain and predict different patterns of motion of objects (e.g., linear and uniform circular motion, velocity and acceleration, momentum and inertia). sketch the theoretical path of a projectile resolve a vector into perpendicular components both graphically and algebraically determine the resultant of two or more vectors graphically or algebraically

Part II: Lesson Activator: 1. Do Now: Students will sketch vectors to represent the horizontal and vertical velocity of a soccer ball at 5 different points in trajectory: The moment the ball leaves the foot of the kicker Half way through the flight up At the highest point of flight Halfway through the flight down The moment the ball hits the ground 2. Students will be selected to adjust the trajectory of an Angry Bird to successfully collide with the structure and capture the target. Summary of Learning Activities: 1. Students will work in small groups to apply their understanding of projectile motion to 2 quantitative problems in preparation for the lab experience. a. Example 1: A soccer ball is kicked with an initial velocity of 18 m/s at an angle of 30o to the horizontal. i. What is the hang time of the ball? ii. How far down field does the ball land? b. Example 2: i. A pistol that fires a signal flare gives the flare an initial speed of 120 m/s. If the flare is fired at an angle of 55 above the horizontal on the level salt flats of Utah, how far away will it land? 2. Students will work through 3 stations in the lab: a. Projectiles Launched at an Angle (Computer Simulation Lab) i. Students will predict the variables in the trajectory of a projectile and predict the specific effect of each variable. ii. Students will test their predictions with a computer simulation and determine the launch angle, which results in the longest hang time and horizontal range. b. Mini-Lab Students will design a procedure and collect the necessary data to determine the launch angle of a small ball. c. Problem Solving - Students will work on large white paper to complete 23 projectile motion problems. These problems will be presented to the class on Monday to provide students the opportunity to review the concepts studied during the week of study.

Summarizer: Questions for Discussion 1. What do we know about the motion of a projectile launched at an angle? 2. Velocity provides an additional complicating factor when analyzing the motion of projectiles launched at an angle. Describe the difference between the initial velocity of a projectile launched at an angle and one that is launched horizontally. 3. Describe the symmetry in a trajectory that represents the motion of a projectile launched at an angle. Assessment Evidence: Students will complete the conclusion questions for the computer simulation lab. Students will submit the procedure and calculations for the mini-lab. Problem Set (homework due 11/20) Projectile Motion 3 Exit Pass - 11/16/2012 (lab procedure may carry over through Monday, 11/19) o Describe completely the motion of a soccer ball that is kicked downfield at an angle of 25o with the horizontal? o If the soccer ball is kicked with an initial velocity of 18 m/s at an angle of 25o with the horizontal, what are the vertical and horizontal components of its initial velocity? Exit Pass - Stations Activity Projectiles Launched at an Angle o A punter in a football game kicks a ball from the goal line at 60.0o from the horizontal at 25.0 m/s. What is the hang time of the punt? o When punting a soccer ball, how can the kicker maximize the range of the punt?
