This test me ethod covers the t laboratory determination n using a glas ss hydrometer in conjunction n with a series s of calculations s, of the densit ty, relative den nsity, or API gr ravity of crude pet troleum, petro oleum product ts, or mixtures of petroleum and a nonpetrole eum products normally handled as liquids, and a having a Reid R vapor pre essure of 101.325 kPa (14.696 6 psi) or less. Values are de etermined at existing tem mperatures and d corrected to o 15C or 60F by means of a series of calculations and international standard tables. The initial hydrometer rea adings obtaine ed are uncorre ected hydrometer readings and not density measurements m s. Readings ar re measured on o a hydromet ter at either th he reference te emperature or r at another co onvenient temperature e, and reading gs are correcte ed for the men niscus effect, the thermal t glass expansion e effe ect, alternate calibration temperature t effects e and to the t reference temperature e by means of f the Petroleum m Measureme ent Tables; valu ues obtained at a other than the reference temperature e being hydrom meter reading gs and not den nsity measureme ents. Readings de etermined as density, relativ ve density, or API gravity can be converted to t equivalent values v in the other o units or alte ernate reference temperatur res by means of Interconvers sion Procedur res (API MPMS S Chapter 11.5 5), or Adjunct to D1250 D Guide for f Petroleum Measurement Tables (API MPMS Chapte er 11.1), or bo oth, or tables, as applicable. The initial hydrometer rea adings determined in the laboratory shall s be record ded before per rforming any calculations s. The calculat tions required in Section 10 shall be applied to t the initial hy ydrometer rea ading with observation ns and results reported as re equired by Sec ction 11 prior to use u in a subse equent calcula ation procedur re (ticket calcu ulation, meter factor calcula ation, or base prover p volume dete ermination).

An nnex A1 contain ns a procedure e for verifying o or certifying the equ uipment for this test method. . The e values stated d in SI units are e to be regarde ed as standard. The e values given in parentheses s are provided for information n only. s standard doe This es not purport to address all of the safety con ncerns, if any, a associated with h its use. It is the res sponsibility of th he user of this standard to es stablish app propriate safet ty and health practices and determine the app plicability of reg gulatory limitat tions prior to us se.
