To work means to perform an activity that requires intellectual or physical effort. Workers receive a salary for their work. In relation to work, we can classify a population into two groups:
INACTIVE POPULATION is the people in unpaid jobs and those who do not work for some reasons. Examples: students, homemakers, retired people, etc.
PRIMARY SECTOR: Activities which produce or obtain natural products. SECONDARY SECTOR: Activities related to the transformation of natural products into manufacturated products. TERTIARY SECTOR: Activities which provide a service.
VOCABULARY Jobs
The primary sector includes all those activities which produce or obtain natural products. The main activities are: animal farming, crop farming, fishing and mining.
Crop farmers grow plants for food. These food crops include vegetables, cereals (wheat), alfalfa and fruit. Crop farmers also grow plants to be transformed into other products in factories. These are called industrial crops. For example: white sugar is made from sugar beets and fabric is made from cotton.
Stockbreeding is animal farming. Farm animals are called livestock. They include cattle (cows, bulls), sheep, pigs and poultry (chickens, turkeys). There are two types of stockbreeding: Intensive farming. The animals live in pens and barns. Free-range farming. The animals live in the open and eat grass or grain. Fishing is still an important part of the primary sector in Andalusia. The community has a very extensive coastline, and Andalusian people are the main consumers of fish. There are two types of fishing: Marine fishing. This is fishing on the sea. River fishing. Fishermen catch fish in rivers.
Mining means extracting stones and minerals, such as coal, from under the ground. Miners dig into the soil to reach these natural resources. There are two types of mining: Open mining. When minerals are near the surface of the earth, miners dig quarries. These are large, open holes on the land. Underground mining. When minerals are deep under the earth, miners dig underground mines. These are deep tunnels below the surface.
The secondary sector transforms raw materials into manufactured products. Raw materials are natural resources, such as wood and cotton. Raw materials are transformed into manufactured products in factories. This is called the industrial process.
CONSUMER INDUSTRIES make products to sell directly. For example, oil is produced in Jan, Crdoba and Sevilla.
PRIMARY INDUSTRIES transform raw materials into other materials. For example, the steel industry transforms iron into steel.
TECHNOLOGICAL INDUSTRIES use very modern machines to make new products. For example, the computer industry uses electronic components to make computers. Which industries make these products? INDUSTRIES CAR FOOD METALLURGICAL

The tertiary sector includes all those activities which provide a service.
