CHAPTER - 11

Municipal Solid Waste Management

11.1. Status of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Management Management MSW one of the key issues in environmental management and is being implemented under the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000. Cities are littered with garbage and waste collection efficiencies are not satisfactory. Disposal sites are potential threats to groundwater contamination and deteriorating the ambient air quality. The Ministry of Urban Development year 2000 estimated 100,000 MT/d of MSW generation, CPCB carried surveys in 2004-05 for 35 metro cities and 24 state capitals. Waste segregation was not being done at the source and this is a major handicap in MSW management. Sl. The states of Gujarat, West Bengal, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharahstra have made satisfactory progress in management of MSW. 11.2. Status of municipal solid waste (collection, processing & disposal) in Class-I Cities and Class-II Towns CPCB has initiated a survey on status of water supply, sewage (collection, treatment & disposal) and municipal solid waste (collection, processing & disposal) in Class-I Cities and

ECOCITY PROGRAMME The Centre for Spatial Environmental Planning created at the Central Pollution Control Board under the World Bank funded Environmental Management Capacity Building Project and supported by the GTZ-CPCB Project under the Indo-German Bilateral Programme. Conceptualized the Ecocity programme for improving the environment and achieving sustainable development through a comprehensive urban improvement system employing practical, innovative and non-conventional solutions. The following towns have been covered under the programme , MSW is also one of the thrust areas :

Vrindavan, Ujjain, Puri, Tirupati, Kottayam, Thanjavour Three towns namely Chanderi, Sawai Madhopur and Darjeeling have been taken up under this programme too.
