The steps of solution of each problem should be shown clearly in the space provided. Write your answers in boxes provided, otherwise your answer will not be considered. Useful constants:g = 9.8 m/s2 , k = 9x109 Nm2/C2, e = -1.602x10-19C, 0= 8.85x10-12 C2/Nm2 QUESTION 1 (25 %)

Total Out of 100 %

What is the charge density on the surface of a conducting sphere of radius 15 cm whose potential on the surface of the sphere is 200 V.
R

r = 15 10 2 m, V = 200Volts and V = k
then V = k

QUESTION 2 (25 %) (a) When two capacitors are connected in parallel, the resulting combination has a total capacitance 9 F. When the same two capacitors are connected in series, the resulting combination has a total capacitance 2 F. What are the capacitances of the two capacitors? CC CC PARALLEL SERIES Ceq = 9 F = C1 + C2 and Ceq = 2 F = 1 2 , then 2 F = 1 2 and C1C2 = 18( F ) 2 C1 + C2 9 F 18 A so that C1 = 18 / C2 . Inserting C1 in Ceq , then one gets C1 + C2 = 9 F + C2 = 9 . Solving for C2, C2 C = 3 F or 6 F one finds that C2 = 3 F OR C2 = 6 F . So that we write 2 C1 = 6 F or 3 F (b) If these two capacitors are connected in parallel to a voltage source which has 12 Volts, what are the accumulated charges and voltage accross on each capacitor?
For the PARALLEL case, it is known that the potential is same for all units in circuit. Then, q1 = V1C1 q1 = 12 * 6 q1 = 72 C and q2 = V C2 q1 = 12 *3 q1 = 36 C

(c) Repeat part (b), if these two capacitors are connected in series.
For the SERIES case, it is known that the charge on the Cs are the same. Then Qtotal = q1 = q2 = VCEq and CEq = 2 F for series. So Qtotal = q1 = q2 = 12 * 2 = 24 C . Finally, V1 = V1 = q1 24 C = = 8Volts . C1 3 C q1 24 C = = 4Volts and C1 6 C

QUESTION 3 (25 %) A L = 500cm long conductor cylindrical rod with a radius a=2cm carrying a total charge of +8 1019 C is surrounded by a conducting cylindrical shell of radius b=4cm carrying a total charge of 8 1019 C as shown. (a) Find an expression for the electric field at a distance r where a < r < b;

b a
L

When the Gaussian surface is chosen between a and b, we write

E dS =

Qencl

and E 2 rL =

qinner

where

the enclosed charge is just the total charge on the iner cylinder. Then the electrical inside the cylinder is q E = inner . 2 0 rL

(b) Find the potential difference between the cylinder surfaces. q To find the potential , we write V = E dl where E = inner between a and b. So, we write 2 0 rL

V =

qinner dr cos( ) where is the angle between E and dr, and dr is the displacement vector 2 0 rL

along the E lines. Since E and dr is paralel to each other, from n a to b then, = 00 . So, b q q 1 b and it is found that V = 2 109Volt . V = inner dr = V and it is found that V = inner ln 2 0 L a r 2 0 L a

QUESTION 4 (25 %) A uniformly charged conducting ring with a radius a=2 cm carrying a total charge of +8 1019 C is surrounded by another uniformly charged conducting ring with radius b=4 cm carrying a total charge of 8 1019 C as shown in Figure. Rings are parallel to the ground, in the same plane and their centers are crossing. (a) Find the electric field at a point P which is at a distance d=50 cm from the center of rings. qinner d ) The electric field for the inner ring at point d is E = (+ y 4 0 (a 2 + d 2 )3/ 2 qouter d ) . The net field vector is and for the outer one is E = ( y 4 0 (b 2 + d 2 )3/ 2 qd 1 1 ) where q=qinner=qouter. E= 2 (y 2 2 3/ 2 4 0 (a + d ) (b + d 2 )3/ 2
) (it is in +y Substituting numerical values, one gets E 2 1010 N / m(+ y direction.)

(b) If a sphere having mass 10 grams with charge Q is located at point P given in (a), it stays at rest at that point. What is the approximate value of Q ? mg Since F = QE = mg , then Q = and Q = 4.8 108 C . E
