Theater Design & Tech Ms Moraes Costume Design Individual Short Essay #1 1-2 pages in length, + 2 collages Due

Tuesday March 18th Choose any one (1) character from Romeo & Juliet, and create two (2) collages of inspiration for costumes they might wear in two (2) different parts of the play. Think about how these costumes might be different and what they reveal about the character.
Example: Juliet in Act I, scene 3 when Lady Capulet tells Juliet that Paris wants to marry her AND Juliet in Act III, scene 2 When Juliet finds out that Romeo has been banished

Compile a collage for an imagined costume for this character at two (2) different points in the play. Be clear and specific! Collage = Creative research/visual inspiration. This can include magazine clippings, photos, fabric swatches, etc. Since color is an important aspect of this project, black and white photocopies or printouts will not be acceptable. You are not required to draw or design a costume, simply gather inspirational images that would help you in your process were you to design a costume. Think about color, fabric, texture, shape, and silhouette as well as what your choices indicate about the wearer. If you wish to draw a costume to supplement your collages you may do so, but only to supplement the assignment, not in place of the collages and paper. Follow your interests! Be creative. Have fun! In your paper include an introduction, thesis, and conclusion and write about your collages. Write for an audience who does not know the assignment. Answer the questions: Why did you choose the images you did? What in the images inspired you? Remember design elements: Point, Line, Shape, Mass, Color, and Texture What do your choices tell you about the wearer? Think about Revealing Character, Mood, and Theme About the play? Think about Time and Period, Place and Locale, Mood, and Theme.

Since you will be using images that are not your own you must indicate where the image came from. Give it your best shot. Citation examples are on the back of this assignment sheet. MLA citation for images and artwork
