In his criticizing article, Cone declares that the poem A Blessing is one of Wrights best known and most moving pieces of poetry. Within his article, Cone discusses the types of literary devices Wright uses after giving a brief summary about the poem. The first type of literary device Wright uses in his poetry piece is epiphany; with this epiphany, Wright ties in a metaphor-- if I stepped out of my body I would break / Into blossom. Cone declares that Wright has creative ways to show loneliness. A Blessing also includes situational irony that demonstrates that A Blessing is not only about love, beauty, and reincarnation, but that it is also about will power, which can hide all the repulsiveness in the world and embrace the beauty all life contains.

Martin views the trilogy Anaya has built on Bless Me, Ultima-- each book in the trilogy dealing with the lifestyle Chicanos live growing up after the World War I era. Martin discusses the expectations Antonios parents have for him. She compares Anaya to Antonio himself-- they both had pressure put upon them to become either a farmer or cowboy; Antonios story is a reflection of Anayas childhood. McNeil also declares that Anayas book has been censored for the certain language that is used in parts of the novel. Although that topic is quite controversial, McNeil claims that Anaya truly masters demonstrating new ways of thinking to all the readers of his novels.

With use of great diction and phrasing, McNeil makes clear, strong points on her thoughts of the novel. McNeil is very profound in her writing and causes the readers to fully understand the topics in the novel. Within her article, McNeil includes the importance of family unity, which is quite difficult to maintain in Antonios family. In the article, McNeil describes the differences between Antonios mother and father and how they both wish for their youngest son to live two completely different lifestyles when he gets older. Antonios mother, Maria Luna, wants her youngest son to become a priest, while Gabriel Marez, Antonios dad, wants his last son to become a vaquero,a cowboy, and live his life on the llano,the plain. McNeil also introduces the search for identity-- Antonio, with his parents different wishes, is found to be lost within himself. Antonio has to find his own identity and become what he truly believes he should be. Lastly, McNeil introduces the internal costs of war, Antonios three older brothers left to fight in the Vietnamese War, but on their arrival, Antonio notices something different and odd about them. They seem to be up in the clouds, they do not seem to know what is going around them, they seem-- lost.
