KEEP FROM KILLING YOUR POWER EQUIPMENT

BY James A Nutter, Nutter Equipment
I was on the south side of Lebanon this morning and saw a deadly threat to all the lawnmowers, chainsaws, and other power lawn equipment in Wilson County: a new gas station offering E85 fuel. E85 is a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. The benefit of E85 is that ethanol is made from renewable resources such as corn and produces less carbon emissions. It has been government subsidized/mandated and is usually priced about 10% less than regular gas, so when you pull up to the pump, it is the least expensive product. However, E85 can only be used in Flex-fuel designated vehicles. We can debate whether turning food into fuel is good policy, but there is no debate as to what ethanol can do to small engines. Fuel begins to degrade as soon as it leaves the refinery. High temperatures, high humidity, and poor storage can turn gas stale in 30 days. Just as you might get a tummy ache from drinking sour milk, your engine-powered lawn equipment doesnt do well with stale gasoline. Neither stale fuel nor sour milk smells right. The main reason for fuels short shelf life is ethanol. When you go to a gas station in Lebanon today, you will find that most gasoline is blended with up to 10% ethanol and is (or should be) labeled E-10. Now we can buy E-85. Cars built after 2001 have computerized electronic fuel injection instead of carburetors and should run okay on E-15 (or 15% ethanol). Newer vehicles that are designated for flex-fuel can run on E-85, which contains 85% ethanol. Since gasoline has more energy than ethanol, however, your mileage will decrease by around 30%, thus eliminating that 10% per gallon price savings. Normally, since you fill your cars gas tank every week or two, the fuel stays fresh, and stale fuel is not an issue. Small engines on lawn equipment have carburetors and will be damaged by using ethanol blends greater than E-10. Since most people do not use their lawn equipment every day and store fuel in gas cans, stale fuel has become a major issue. Ethanol attracts and absorbs water. Humidwww.LookBeforeYouPump.com ity in the air becomes an ethanol/water solution in the gas tank, and when the water level exceeds .5%, the water/ethanol will cause phase separaScan with you QR tion. If you have ever reader app to see mixed oil and vinegar for the video salad dressing, you have seen phase separation. In fuel, the ethanol/water mix sinks to the bottom of the tank and the gasoline or gas/oil mix in two-cycle engines floats on top. Since most small engines are fed from the bottom of the tank, you will suck water right into the carburetor, and the engine will run very rough (if it runs at all). If water gets into the engine, it will rust the metal surfaces in the engine. We see this corrosion especially in the carburetor, where the fuel clogs the passages instead of flowing freely. We also see this in pistons with stuck rings that scar the head. At this point, the cost of repairs might exceed the value of the lawn equipment. Solving the problem So, what is the power-equipment industry doing about this problem? They are taking a three-pronged approach that includes chemical, technical, and political issues. On the chemical front, companies like Star-Tron, Sea Foam and Sta-bil make fuel-treatment products to help eliminate the ethanol problem. If you need or want to store gas for more than 30 days, you should always use one of these products. Engine technology is getting more advanced, too. Kohler has introduced new EFI (electronic fuel injection) engines that eliminate the carburetor and associated problems, while improving fuel economy by 25%, and the engine starts just like your car. With $3.50/gallon gas, that saves you around $1.00 an hour. The Outdoor Power Equipment Industry is also lobbying Congress to slow down the spread of higher ethanol blends of fuel and has started www.LookBeforeYouPump.com to provide information. What you can do to protect your equipment Your biggest opportunity to prevent fuel problems is at the point when you purchase the fuel. Make sure that you buy 87 octane fuel that is no more than 10% ethanol. Buy from a station that sells lots of fuel so that you get the freshest fuel possible. Buy only as much fuel as you will use in 30 days or less. If you must store the fuel longer than 30 days, use a fuel stabilizer (like Star-Tron), and add it as soon as possible. If you are mixing two-cycle oil with the gas for use in your weed eater, buy quality oil that has stabilizer already in it. Use a gas can that seals properly to keep out air. Dispose of that old gas can with the lost cap and leaking spout. Store gas in a cool, dry place that is not in your house. There are two schools of thought on storing lawn equipment for the winter. One says drain the fuel completely. Since it is hard to drain the fuel completely (and disposal of the fuel might be an issue), I prefer to fill it to the top with stabilized fuel to allow the least amount of air in the system. Spring weather is just about here in Wilson County, and it is time to start up the lawnmower and weed eater. What you did when you put it away for the winter will determine if it starts or not. All small engine mechanics will be cleaning or replacing a lot of carburetors in the next few weeks. This is another example of my mothers wisdom when she told me, An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

8 Tips for
1. Study up Find out about license and insurance requirements for contractors in your state. And before you call a contractor, know the model of your current system and its maintenance history. Also make note of any uncomfortable rooms. This will help potential contractors better understand your heating needs. 2. Ask for referrals Ask friends, neighbors, and co-workers for contractor referrals. You can also contact local trade organizations for names of members in your area. 3. Call references Ask contractors for customer references and call them. Ask about the contractors installation or service performance, and if the job was completed on time and within budget. 4. Find special offers A heating and cooling system is one of the largest purchases youll make as a homeowner. Keep your costs down by checking around for available rebates on energy-efficient ENERGY STAR qualified heating and cooling equipment. Begin your search at www.energystar.gov. 5. Look for ENERGY STAR ENERGY STAR qualified products meet

Hiring A HeAting And Cooling ContrActor

strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and offer significant long-term energy savings. Contractors should be able to show you calculations of savings for ENERGY STAR heating and cooling equipment. 6. Expect a home evaluation The contractor should spend significant time inspecting your current system and home to assess your needs. A bigger system isnt always better; a contractor should size the heating and cooling system based on the size of your house, level of insulation, and windows. A good contractor will inspect your duct system (if applicable) for air leaks and insulation and measure airflow to make sure it meets manufacturers specifications. 7. Get written, itemized estimates When comparing contractors proposals (bids), be sure to compare cost, energy efficiency and warranties. A lowest price may not be the best deal if its not the most efficient because your energy costs will be higher. 8. Get it in ink Sign a written proposal with a contractor before work gets started. Itll protect you by specifying project costs, model numbers, job schedule and warranty information.

CHOOSE A CHECKING ACCOUNT

These days, your choice in a checking account doesnt have to be driven by the lowest monthly fees, your ability to maintain an account balance that will avoid penalties, or the fear of hidden charges on your statement. Instead, at the right bank, you can base your decision on factors like which features you really need, and even rewards that you can really use. Step one, of course, is finding a bank with the selection of deposit accounts that will give you these capabilities. Free accounts arent available everywhere, let alone a free account with rewards, and if you want to choose from multiple free reward accounts, that narrows the field even more. It also doesnt hurt for the financial institution to provide other things you value, like mobile technology, additional financial services, personal care and community involvement. Next, your specific checking needs come into play. Can you get to your funds easily when you need them? Do you like receiving your statements in an electronic format? Do you use your debit card frequently? What balance do you typically keep in your account? Finally, its time to consider extras that can round out your checking experience. Maybe it would be helpful to have some of your funds routed directly to savings. Or maybe youd enjoy travel-related perks, or free music downloads. Fortunately, theres an easy way to start the quest for your ideal checking account. And if you get that part right, the other steps can fall right into place with the help of a friendly banker whos willing to get to know you and your financial needs. Wilson Bank & Trust represents a rare combination of big-time banking options, tremendous stability, independent ownership and hometown charm. With variety of deposit account options, WB&T is certain to have a checking account that fits your situation. In fact, its the only local institution that offers Kasasa, a suite of free checking products with rewards, which is available only at select community banks. The three Kasasa checking products at WB&T come with no monthly fees, plus the ability to earn rewards like a high rate of interest (Kasasa Cash), cash back on check card purchases (Kasasa Cash Back) or music downloads (Kasasa Tunes). A new account representative at your nearest office can help you decide which is most beneficial for you based on your account level and your interests. Qualifying for rewards is simple it just involves the use of electronic services, like e-statements and online banking, that youre probably accustomed to already. And anytime you dont qualify, there are no penalties to worry about, you can still earn a modest interest rate depending on which account you choose, and you can go right back to qualifying during your next statement period. The accounts also come with nationwide refunds of service charges for non-WBT ATMs. Whats more, when you choose an account with cash rewards, you can tie your checking account to Kasasa Saver and automatically save the rewards you earn during each cycle. In addition to Kasasa, Wilson Bank & Trust offers checking accounts, including Campus Checking and Solid Gold Checking, that are tailor made for certain customers like college students or adults over 50. These accounts provide special features designed for those specific customers, making it easy to bank on campus or enjoy discounted group travel. If you just prefer regular, old-school banking and arent concerned with online or mobile services, WB&T can help there too, with a few different choices for basic checking accounts. For the most options in checking, and great service besides, visit Wilson Bank & Trust at any of 24 full-service Middle Tennessee offices or online at wilsonbank.com. Youll find that constant fees and mystery charges dont have to be part of your banking experience, no matter how or where you prefer to manage your funds.

Free checking with rewards you can really use make Kasasa accounts an ideal option for many customers. Kasasa is available locally only at Wilson Bank & Trust, and its arrival last year was celebrated with a number of special promotions involving bank employees.
