THE 2012 ASME CONGRESS TO SPOTLIGHT ENGINEERING INNOVATION

New York Times Columnist, Thomas L. Friedman, will be Keynote Speaker at the Global Conference Nov 9 15 in Houston NEW YORK, Aug. 13, 2012 The 2012 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, including presentations on topics ranging from energy to aerospace, will be held Nov. 9-15, at the Hilton Americas, in Houston, Texas. Thomas L. Friedman, bestselling author and foreign affairs columnist for The New York Times, will deliver the keynote address on the theme of energy diversity. Among other activities, the 2012 Congress will showcase the annual ASME Student Design Competition finals. The competition, named Energy Relay, will challenge mechanical engineering students to design a scaled, proof of concept prototype for sustainable transportation. Major funding for the competition is provided by Boeing. Other highlights include: The Society-wide Micro & Nano Technology Forum, an interdisciplinary program bringing together leaders from across ASME divisions to discuss the contributions of nanotechnology and micro-based systems to fields ranging from healthcare to textiles. The forum will include a student poster session. International Undergraduate Research and Design Exposition, in which students present their research programs and design projects to engineers and scientists from industry, government, and academia. Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition, in which students are judged on the clarity and effectiveness of oral presentations. Early-career Engineers Mini Talks, a social networking event for engineers in the early stages of their careers.

Combining technical sessions and an equipment exhibit, the ASME Congress will bring together engineers and research scientists from around the world to discuss breakthrough innovations that are shaping the future of engineering. The Congress will feature technical tracks on topics including aerospace technology, manufacturing, dynamic systems, safety engineering, and transportation. Multidisciplinary in format, the conference also will explore microsystems, nanotechnology, mechatronics and other subjects that are at the forefront of engineering innovation. ASME will also pay tribute to the accomplishments, distinguished service and professional achievements of some of todays most accomplished engineers in the 2012 ASME Honors Assembly. Additionally, the Equipment Exposition will feature the products and services of technical publishers, CAD/CAM developers, and other players in the engineering field. This Months Spotlight: The ASME Insurance Program

The major driving force for my enrolling in the ASME life insurance program was because I was a member of ASME since college. The Term Insurance offered to me has an attractive rate. Lowering rates when theres an excess also is attractive. They have a very good niche for ASME Members. I trust ASME. Roger Hackard, ASME Life Member since 1969 Dear Members, Mr. Hackard, who gave us this months testimonial, is typical of thousands of members who first joined ASME while in college, and maintained their membership after graduation for the many benefits ASME has to offer. And while many engineers may not initially join for the insurance benefits, as in Mr. Hackfords experience, the ASME-endorsed Life Insurance Program can be one of the most valuable member benefits because if offers protection for yourself, your family and your loved ones. As an ASME member, you are eligible to receive exclusive savings on a variety of traditional and innovative insurance products from world-class carriers such as New York Life, Liberty Mutual, Lloyds of London, and more. Insurance products including:

Long Term Care Professional Liability Accidental Death Dental and Enhanced Dental Travel Annual Renewable Term Life 10-Year Term Life 20-Year Term Life Auto Homeowners and Renters Disability

All of the plans are administered by Marsh US Consumer, ASMEs insurance program provider for more than 50 years. Marsh is a name you can trust for their quality plans and carriers, as well as excellent support and customer service. So, in keeping with Life Insurance Awareness Month, I encourage you to learn more about this and all of our great ASMEendorsed group insurance plans and carriers by visiting the programs website at: www.asmeinsurance.com. As always, thank you for your continued loyalty to ASME and for your support of the engineering profession. Please feel free to drop me a line at membership@asme.org and let me know how we can enhance your experience. I hope youll agree that ASME Membership is more important than ever to your professional career.

Warmest regards, Michael Kreisberg Director, ASME Membership Development

ASME RELEASES STUDY ON THE FUTURE OF THE MECHANICAL ENGINEERING PROFESSION NEW YORK, Aug. 20, 2012 As the worlds population nears seven-billion people, mechanical engineers will play a major role in meeting global challenges says a research study conducted by ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers). The study, The State of Mechanical Engineering: Today and Beyond, was the result of a survey of over 1,200 engineers with a minimum of two years of experience in mechanical engineering-related positions. The survey asked participants to rate everything from the current levels of optimism around the field to their opinions on the hottest areas in mechanical engineering, along with the personal and professional skills they think are needed to succeed now and in the future. With the expanding global population comes the need to address challenges such as clean water, sanitation, food and energy. While the study shows optimism about the ability of engineers to meet global challenges, it points to the importance of working on interdisciplinary teams of professionals to address these issues. The study also revealed that early career engineers and students will play a major role in meeting global challenges over the next 10-20 years, especially in the areas of sustainability or renewable energy, bioengineering and biomedical fields, nanotechnology, green building technology, energy storage, smart grids and greenhouse gas mitigation. The ASME research study also revealed that over the next two decades: The prestige of working as an engineer will increase The financial rewards of working as an engineer will be greater The number of engineers working in less-developed countries will be greater The need for engineers to increase their ability to communicate more effectively, increase language skills and manage global teams will increase Skills in motion simulation, animation and virtual prototype creation are needed When participates were asked how they would acquire additional knowledge or expertise needed to address future challenges, almost all engineers said they would employ self-study. According to the survey, early career engineers prefer traditional face-to-face instruction for acquiring knowledge such as in-house training, mentoring, and part-time graduate degree programs. More experienced engineers, on the other hand, are more comfortable relying on magazines, books and online courses. The study also indicated that basic engineering disciplines will continue to be indispensable. Abilities such as multilingual and multicultural skills will be essential in the anticipated increasingly global work environment. In compiling the results of The State of Mechanical Engineering: Today and Beyond, ASME sought to provide an accurate picture of the current attitudes of todays engineers as well as their expectations on the future of the engineering profession.
