1.) Basic information to the DDE-Server 2.) Select interface 3.) Set up transmission channel 4.) Activate server 5.) Basic settings 6.) Example of data exchange using MS Excel 7.) Fault messages

1.) Basic information to the DDE-Server

a) Only instantaneous values can be read out; b) The server always starts with the setting with which it ended, this means the channel settings, language, interface etc. are saved; c) The above mentioned save sequence is made in the "server.ini" file; d) In general unit settings cannot be changed from the DDE-Server; unit settings can only be made front end on the unit or by using the "ReadWin" software e) The language can be changed whilst running, all settings remain unchanged; f) All important information can be read off from the info field during operation; g) The call syntax is dependent on the individual programmes; h) Always start the server first before attempting to receive data using a different programme; i) Application name: j) Server name: k) Item name: dde_serv server Channelx where x = 1...50

l) A comma must be used as the decimal point: ','

2.) Select interface

Using the edit box "COM" select the serial port with which the unit or units are connected. Because the unit could have two different interfaces the connection could by made using an RS 232/V.24 or an RS 485 (max. 32 units) interface. If the decision is made to operate using the RS484 interface, it is important to note that the DDE server automatically recognises which interface is being used and whether it is operated using Echo or not. The interface settings are globally valid for all transmission channels, this means that all channels must be connected to the same interface.

3.) Set up transmission channel

A maximum of 50 transmission channels can be set up, this means that a maximum of 50 channels from all the active channels of the units connected can be displayed. In order to set up proceed as follows: a) Place the cursor on the channel in the table that is to be set up and operate the Enter button; b) Enter the unit address (01...99) of the unit from which data is to be read out and operate the Enter button; c) Enter the channel number of the channel that is to be read out; this is combined as follows: X Y Z X = type of channel Y = number of the channel Z = category of measured value possible channel types: * 'A' * M * D * C channel number: * 01-16 * 01-08 * 01-37 * 01-08 analogue channel mathematics channel digital channel digital combinations analogue channel mathematics channel digital channnel digital combinations

category of measured value: *A actual value * I integration value intermediate analysis *D integration value day analysis *M integration value month analysis *Y integration value Year analysis d) If the channel is to be read out then Active=Yes must be set; if Active=No is set then the channel is set up but will not be read out by the PC; this setting has no influence on the channel itself. This means that the internal unit settings are not changed; e) Operate the Save button ! If more than 50 channels are needed then more than one DDE server must be installed on the PC and started, this also means they must drive different COM ports. Here it must be noted that the application name (*.exe) will have to be changed manually so that each server has its individual name. The COM ports have to use different Interrupts.

4.) Activate server

Once the "Activate Server" button is operated the data of all active channels are made available for other applications. The server can be stopped and started at any time in order to make changes to the settings.

5.) Basic settings

A click on the "Basic settings" button results in a reset of all unit addresses to 01 and all channels to A01A. Additionally all channels are deactivated. All channels must be reprogrammed once the "Basic settings" button has been used. Old settings cannot be reactivated.

6.) Example of data exchange using MS Excel

The syntax by which the data is collected from the DDE server is dependent on the individual programmes. The following syntax results from a line in MS Excel: a) = b) Application name c) Pipe d) Server name e) Exclamation mark f) Channel + channel number To print a formula Here: dde_serv (.exe) Shortcut: AltGr + < Here: server

Example: =dde_serv|server!Channelx Whereby x is the number of the virtual channel that is to be transmitted, e.g. 1...50

7.) Fault messages

"- - - - - - " : "^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ " : "TRANS ERROR" : "INIT ERROR" : Cable open circuit or under range (sensor) Over range (sensor) Cable from PC to unit defective or unplugged Interface cannot be initialised.
