Today, being a man, in many ways is about perfection. Today, it's not good enough just to fit a stereotype. Today being a man means measuring up on all fronts. Personally, society may want that from me, to be perfect on all fronts, but choose the things want to improve about myself. Conforming to what other peopIe want has never been a strong interest to me, so in that way I am seIfish. would rather tell them what they want from me. know one thing, A deep crisp and permanent voice is something everyone wants from you. If you can deIiver, you may not need to worry about other expectations. The other main expectations for a man are having money and a good body. All three of these are really not too difficult if you put your mind to it. If you just decide to go out and get these attributes, they can be yours. More about that later, but right now lets explore the system developed and investigate how and why it works. Many people believe that a weak voice is the result of a small voice box or vocal chords. n a way this is true, but it is not common. Typically the reason is "fix-able The vocal chords are a muscle group, they are responsible for the tone and crispness of the sound a person makes. The mouth and tongue do the job of forming specific words and sounds but the raw tone and sound comes from the vocal chords. When the vocal chords are tight and not limber, there are stress elements present in the raw sound your vocal chords make. Typically, vocal chords do not vary in size too much. t is a two part process, conditioning the larynx to become relaxed and supple is easy. The voice box is a small muscle group, that when air is pushed through it, it produces a sound. f your voice is often weak or squeaky, the problem is not with your mouth or tongue. We are completely focused on that muscle group and the qualities it produces...the voice box f the voice box is stressed, it is too tight and resonates at a higher pitch. My own problem was anxiety when spoke in public. This anxiety translated into a high pitched sounding voice. However, didn't care that was anxious, just wanted a deeper voice, so what am about to show you will work no matter how anxious you may feel on the inside. The vocal chords need to be loose and supple, to produce lower, deeper tones. You can test this fact right now simply by making a humming sound, tilting your head up, then making the exact same sound with your head tilted down, your chin closer to your chest. You will notice when you tilt your head up, the same sound is a higher pitch. The reason why is when you tilt your head up, you are stretching the vocal chords, making them tighter. What this simple test proves, is that if your vocal chords are tight, they cannot produce a low deep crisp voice. Understanding this, the job is simple. To make our vocal chords loose all the time, and not just intermittently, we need to make a permanent change in that area. The reason for a high pitched squeaky voice, believe is because we use the small muscle of our vocal chords to help hold up our neck and posture. This may sound funny, but they are a muscle group, and don''t actually mean the vocal chords are holding our head up, mean we are unconsciously tensing them all the time, along with our other neck muscles, as if they were part of the group responsible for holding our head up. When we develop and tone a muscle what happens is the muscle fiber becomes thicker, and enlarges slightly. What this means is that the muscIe retains its shape and does more work with Iess effort. As an example, if you did sit ups for a month, you would develop your abdominals. They would get ripped or if not toned. So before the work outs, the abs were atrophied and weak. They did a bad job of holding in your stomach. Your inner organs sort of pushed their way out when you relaxed your already weak abdominals. This led to the familiar pot belly. However, after the sit ups, you still may have a layer of fat on your belly, because you didn't go on a calorie intake diet, but when you relax your stomach, the pot belly is gone. The toned abdominaIs hoId their shape, resisting the push of your organs even when reIaxed. This is because the wall of abdominals is toned and retain their shape. They are thicker and therefore hoId in your guts better without you even needing to tense them. When you have this type of muscle fiber, one that works even when relaxed, muscle that actually does the job of maintaining your posture even when you are applying no tension to the muscle, what happens is the bad habit of using awkward and inappropriate tension in muscle groups that just are not built for the job...stops. This brings us back to our vocal chords. f we strengthen our neck muscles, the right neck muscles, what happens is the vocal chords become nested. They can reIax within the toned group of muscIes hoIding up our neck and head. By doing the following exercises, you not only get a deeper voice very quickly, virtually in a matter of days. But if you keep it up for a few months, your neck starts to Iook reaIIy buff. This thickening of the neck is a major improvement to appearance. Even if you are pudgy, or if you are too skinny, when you wear clothes, but have a thicker neck, you look muscular even if you are not under your clothes. When got a thicker neck from these exercises, what happened to me was that got so excited by my thicker neck, that decided wanted more manly shoulders too. So got them within a month. My shoulders developed by 15 full centimeters wider. The exercises are easy to do, you don't need to buy any equipment and they work like crazy. Lay on your back on your bed, with the top half of your body overhanging at around the nipples. So your shoulders and head are completely off the bed. Really tense and feel the two large muscles that go vertically from your shoulder to your ear. (The StemocIeidomastoid's) These muscles are the ones we are going to strengthen and enlarge. Tilt your head back, to the left, and lift your head squeezing the right side . Hold it tense once your head is lifted nearly to your chest, then release and slowly come back down again. Repeat this 15 times or until it is absolutely killin you. Then do the right side, tensing your left muscle. Do this in 3 to 5 sets through out the day. You don't have to do them consecutively. Just make sure to reaIIy tense them. ReaIIy feeI the crush of the squeeze. You will be amazed how well they respond in size and tension. By day 4 you will literally be speaking in a much deeper voice. As long as your neck muscles are toned, this will be a permanent change. You will need to maintain but not as often as at first. Stemocleidomastoid Feel the blood fill the muscle andhold it tight and tense for quite a few seconds. g StemocIeidomastoid's The other thing to keep your voice box supple is to drink lots and lots of water. 2 liters a day if you can manage it. When your body dehydrates, your muscIes IiteraIIy shrink. You need water to keep them suppIe. By day 4 or 5 you wiII have the required muscIe tone to maintain a comfortabIe posture without your muscIes having to work. That means your vocal chords, will not be stressing and tensing, after a few days of this, they begin to loosen up and you will notice a crispness and timber to your voice, because the vocal chords have been exposed to an extended period of rest. This same phenomenon, you will notice when you wake up in the mornings. Even people with usually squeaky voices will notice that some mornings, they wake up to a nice rumbling timber in their voice. The reason why is because they had a good restful nights sleep, and in particular the vocal chords have had a chance to lose the usually present tension. Of course, after a few hours, as the day goes on, the vocal chords begin to tighten up as the stress component begins to creep in. When you strengthen and thicken your neck muscles to the point where they do all the work holding your head up, The vocal chords are exposed to that same relaxed environment that a good nights sleep often gives. This means you will have a permanent and crisp voice at your command. If this doesn't work for you, or you just cannot do the exercises properIy, you can aIways go see your doctor about getting some HRT (hormone repIacement therapy). This is the same thing women take that want to be maIe. Their soft feminine voices become deeper and more powerfuI using the hormone treatment. don't recomend this unless you really are sure you need it and consulting with a doctor first is best. However, some men do indeed just have small vocal chords that produce a "smaller sound. You will find the neck muscle excercises will imporove the sound even if this is the case. But it is very rare, most vocal chords are roughly the same size and having a voice box that is so small that it cannot produce a nice timber is rare. The hormone replacement therapy does work exceptionally well and understand it makes the testicles larger and muscle development is more pronounced after a few courses. Hormone replacement therapy, is certainly a last resort, however having more testosterone coursing through your system does feel good. t is often used to treat depression in men too. Your libido comes back to life in a dramatic way also. t is a bit of a rush hear, but again, it is a chemical change in your body and not natural, so it should be considered with some caution. Training the voice After a few days of these exercises and a consistent consumption of water, you will notice a new timber to your voice because it is dramatically absent of those stress elements. At that point you should do what did by training yourself to find that pitch and timber on cue. The way did this was the following. would close the door of my dorm and hum slowly in a perfect timber then go deeper and slower. Within a few seconds my hum would be so slow, that the vocal chords were not humming fluidly anymore, but instead humming at one increment at a time. You may have done this in the past yourself. can hum like this, in incremental sounds, with 10 seconds in between increments. The slower the better. This believe creates a memory in the brain. have caught myself unconsciously looking for that "place before speak socially. This is an important step and can really help you zero in on that crispness. n terms of training yourself. found every time had my voice, when it wasn't squeaky, was an opportunity to use it and enjoy it. To say things out loud in solitude and really enjoy the timber. This type of focusing in on the voice when it is in perfect tone is mental re-enforcement. t is a habit that you develop until your voice begins to respond permanently to the training. Psychologists all agree that a new habit takes around 3 weeks or 21 days to become entrenched through repetition. Good habits can be cultivated and re-inforced. Doing this with your voice when it is in perfect form is the way to create that link between speaking and good timber. The final step is to create a link between speaking socially and your habit of finding that "sweet spot when you are by yourself. You can see the system am presenting here is a chain of mental links that you create over a period. First you begin with the slow humming, practicing going very slow until the vocal chords are humming incrementally. Next, you create a link to that by actually using your voice and enjoying the sound. (There is a reason why say "enjoying found that when my voice was in top shape, that it actually gave me pleasure to hear it. actually began to think differently about myself in positive and favorable ways. would say positive things about myself out loud in a convincing and deep timber. actually caught myself starting to believe the good things was saying about myself) This belief is good and leads to a better self image. The "enjoying part is important because the brain forms new engrams easier with pleasure. All organisms respond to pleasure and recoil from pain. By taking pleasure in your voice and how it sounds, you develop a kind of vibe about yourself. Finally, you make the link to the real life environment which is what all the practice was for in the first place. You practice finding that "place that you created with repetition. t actually is a PLACE, it is a place in your brain, where the memories of your practicing is stored. By learning how to locate that place, in a social or work environment, your body begins to learn to correct the environment in your vocal chords as your memory links from one environment to another. f you think about it, a work or social environment makes you think certain things, from habit, these things or "tapes create an environment in your vocal chords. By learning how to access these new memories you created through practice in privacy, then that environment will naturally dominate. For example, by accessing those memories in social environments, your posture will change because of the feelings you associate with those stored voice training memories. Blood will circulate more freely around your neck, you feel looser and freer. By accessing your practice memories you are telling your body to convert the environment that those memories represent. This is easy and this part of the system does take time to make it a more permanent part of your life. As said, most psychologists agree that 3 weeks or 21 days of repetition is enough for the mind to take over on auto pilot. But initially, you will need to consciously access those memories so the brain cells that store the "practice part of the memories associates with the real life environment of talking socially. More Conscious of how you use your voice. High speakers, typically have a habit of raising their heads slightly when speaking socially. Like they are trying to find their voice. refer back to the simple test asked you to try earlier. The vocal chords need to be limber and old habits die hard. You will need to begin to monitor your posture during social interaction. Anxiety is common in social situations and there is no shame in admitting that. Even with close friends, sometimes we can feel awkward and it is just part of the terrain of being human. Watch the angle of your head when you are about to speak. deally it should be level. Not sunk into your chest and not raised causing the vocal chords to stretch. Posture has a lot to do with voice resonance, not because of the mechanical aspect, but because of feelings released. Posture is not only an indicator of how we feel, but also a catalyst. Standing tall with shoulders square will immediately change your inner environment. suggest you take care to have great posture when creating your "practice memories. What this will do is give your body a cue, when you suddenly remember and stand tall and straight in a social environment to associate that new posture with the "practice memories. t will take repetition, but in time your body will learn to change environments from maybe a little stressed or anxious, to relaxed and smooth. You can use this change in posture as a cue for the body. The first time you do it, you may notice nothing. Or your body may respond instantly. t depends on how much practice you have done. would also say that talking more quietly and carefully in the beginning is a good start. What you are trying to do is erase the old memories and therefore the old habits. You are trying to practice your voice to create a cluster of new memories and then train the body to access those memories during the times when you are around people so you sound good all the time. f you practice, but still talk the same way when it matters, (when you are around people) then this can also be seen as practice and re-enforcement in the mind. So you will have both types of talking competing. However, the memories and bad habits you are creating when around people are stronger because A) you have been doing them longer and have more of them and B) they are more emotionally charged which means they have more re-enforcement value. This is OK because conscious effort is more powerful and wins hands down over the automatic subconscious behaviors. That is why you need a cue. Something to tell the body to create the "practiced environment. Let me teII you how it happened for me My voice had always been high pitched. t was almost intolerable. t was embarrassing and was always ignorant of how sounded. guess just blanked it out and never thought about it because there was nothing could do about it anyway. knew my voice had social ramifications. On some level knew it greatly affected how others saw me. t definitely affected how saw myself. My first breakthrough came after a few days of exercising my neck muscles. They really started to look buff and always thought had a real bad case of pencil neck anyway. When my neck started getting thicker, it was just a little self confidence that came my way. Then suddenly out of nowhere, one morning (around day 4) woke up to a real nice manly timber. But it was different to other times woke up with a morning voice. This voice felt powerful. t lasted nearly all day. had taken most of the week off from class and mainly just hung around in my dorm. But this voice was quite excellent until around 3pm to 4 pm, when first noticed it break a little and the old squeak crept in. By 10pm that night my voice was disappointingly back to how it was. kept up the exercises nevertheless and the next day had a deep timber again. was determined to keep the depth this time all day, so was spare with it. only spoke when really had to and can distinctly remember feeling concerned just before spoke to someone, whether it would hold or start breaking again. t held. was always conscious of my posture especially when around people and talked with a measured response. knew would not have to be so obsessed with this forever, but just until it became second nature to me, which knew takes around 3 weeks or 21 days. was prepared to be this vigilant for at least 21 days to make this permanent. Every day practiced saying things out loud in this deep timber. really enjoyed the sound and feelings of excitement and happiness became associated with the words spoke and how they sounded. This may sound dorky, but was desperate. really wanted and needed this. remember the first time chatted with friends. t was quite a nervous experience because at any moment might lose the voice and it would have been embarrassing to sound so good, then to well...not. The thing that really kept me talking smooth was my posture. t was a constant cue to my body to keep remembering the "sweet spot that had been practicing. On some level, associated square shoulders and standing tall with my practice memories. also played a lot of "Foo Fighters That helped a lot. t was another cue could use and the cd set "N YOUR HONOR held an almost sacred spot in my car. t was taken out not often, only a few times per week. On my way to class or to work. But when hit "play the sounds filled my mind with memories. So this was my second way to cue my body to relax and remember the "sweet spot The emotions that this music delivered was one way to access the enviorment need to speak deep and smooth. will always own a copy of that cd. t rocks anyway, it has some awesome tunes on it. Those guys are deep! Believe me, you cant fail. Do the exercises, drink the water, create practice memories and develop a cue like posture or an external cue like music that your mind can associate with those practice memories. Your body will learn to immediately change in demeanour in subtle ways when you use those cues and remember the practice. After a few weeks, was talking deep all the time. The effort was much less. started to believe in the voice and that sealed the deal. When it consistently does not let you down for a period of time, you get that all important belief. This crucial element makes it real in your life. t was an amazing experience and very empowering, as know it will be for you. When my neck muscles developed and my voice began to be consistently reliable, began to think about my abs and shoulders too. had some sudden and incredible interest from women around that time and figured, should probably do what can to look as good as sound.
