Taking control

Abstract

Our project is designed for paralyzed people. It is designed for anyone and its waterproof. The limb control will allow people to do everyday activities once again. The earpiece can allow you to do this aka a microchip the person who made this is named Jaap Haartsen and Sven Mattisson You can have an implanted microchip or buy a small earpiece. If you by the earpiece it comes with a blue tooth. That way you are able to hook it to a cell phone or game console. In the future we will make the device into a suit. It will allow you to not have to use the microchip or earpiece and you will always have something to wear. When two devices want to talk they both have to agree on numbers of points then the talking begins.

Present Technology

We will use neural implants. The neural implants will connect the nerves so the person will be able to move their paralyzed limb. The neural implants will be wireless so the person can move around. If there were cords, the person would probably only be able to move ten feet. Neural implants have just started to be developed and tested. The test subjects were monkeys. They had the implant on the head. It had big bulky cords. However at Brown university they had made a wireless version. Which is what we are doing.

History

Have you ever wondered how your wireless cellphone works? Blue tooth of course! Did you know that Bluetooth is in almost any electronic you can find. It was created in 1994 by Ericsson mobile communication. You may not think Bluetooth is important but it is a part of your everyday life. Its purpose ranges from connecting cellphones to changing your TV channel. It is used to wirelessly share voice, data, music, photos, and videos. Bluetooth made it possible for people to easily share information across the globe.

Vulcanized Rubber was made in 1844 by Charles Goodyear and Thomas Hancock. They invited it to make rubber to more stable. People were happy when the rubber did not melt. The rubber was made by heating sulfur. At very high temperature and pressure the polymers of liquid natural rubber are modified into long chains of polymers. This is done using the sulphur additives which form cross linkages with the natural polymers of rubber.

The first person who invented plastic was Alexander Parkes, a native of Birmingham England. He called his work Parkensine after himself. The plastic he invented was organic. It was made from cellulose treated with a solvent and nitric acid. It could be molded into any shape when heated. When it cooled, the Parkensine plastic kept its shape. Parkes showed off his invention to the world in the Great International Exibition in 1862. His plastic design won the bronze medal. Parkes thought that what hes invented could replace rubber. But manufacturers soon grew cool due to the Parkensine due to the high cost of its raw minerals. The next step in invention of plastic occurred in the United State in the late 19th century. Billiards was getting very popular. Back then Ivory was used to make billiard balls. Thousands of

elephants were slaughtered only for their ivory tusks. Even back then it was impractical and expensive, not to mention cruel as later animal rights advocates would cry out. Then John Wesley came to the rescue.

Future Technology

Our teams vision for the project is that it will be popular in the future because of its success (if it actually is a success) the money we get will allow us to experiment and perfect our technology. In 20 years our project will probably be updated to only the earpiece and the rest will be gone, if it is a success. If it fails the Limb Control suit will be abandoned and we will probably go back to it and it might work better that time, because we will be more educated. Also we will have to read brainwaves in the future so it can send the thought to the receivers then the receivers can make the muscle react. The suit for it will be down to only the earpiece so it will make it lighter. Also it will make it so youre not so embarrassed when you wear it in public and boost your confidence.

Breakthroughs

In order for our project to succeed we must make many breakthroughs in technology. Two of the biggest breakthroughs needed are mind reading and muscle control. They play the two biggest roles in our project. We have to have them because we must implant a microchip near someones brain. The chip intercepts brain waves and sends the thought to the receivers. Or you can choose to use the wireless earpiece instead. Last, the muscle controller must react to the thought then the muscle will carry out the action.

Design Process

We thought of several ideas while trying to come up with a great idea. Some of our original ideas were a protective suit for injured veterans who would like to reenlist a gyro cup holder for some coffee on the go and last but not least, wireless limb control for paralyzed veterans. We wanted to pick the one that help the most with everyday activities such as bathing, cooking and driving. We narrowed it down to the limb control because its light small and it helps with almost everything.

Consequences The consequences for the Limb Control project are that if it actually worked we would have to sell it and make copies and upgrades which would cost a lot. Also we would have to charge money for limb Control and if we did I would charge $1000. A good consequence would be how it would help people with paralyzed limbs that they cant move.
