Kathy Choate, DTM District 33 Governor 2013 2014

Dear District 33, Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers is arguably one of the greatest football coaches of all time. He said, The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual. Doesnt that apply to our clubs and to our District 33? When our club members achieve their personal communication and leadership goals, clubs will be recognized in the prestigious Distinguished Club Program. When high quality club meetings are held, it fosters an atmosphere of success and breeds excitement, leading to more people wanting to be a part of this valuable experience. Each clubs success has a direct impact on the area, division and ultimately, the districts success. Its teamwork par excellence! I am proud of District 33s heritage. From 1976 1992, we boast an unsurpassed record of being distinguished or better for 16 years in a row! No other district IN THE WORLD has beaten our record! Your district leaders are working to recapture this legacy by upholding our Districts Mission which is, We build new clubs and support all clubs in achieving excellence. Area Governors are being held accountable for providing leads for new club growth and are working directly with club Presidents to help them achieve their clubs goals. We find ourselves in the third quarter of the year. Its time to run the blitz play! A full blown rush to reach our goals! The effort we do now before March 31, will pay great dividends for us. Toastmasters International holds us accountable to three measurable goals, i.e., new clubs, membership payments and distinguished clubs. This is how our success will be judged. I am asking each club member and district officer for your help. As a club member, make a commitment to yourself to complete your educational and leadership goals by June 30. By doing so, you will reap the benefits of our Toastmasters Program. I challenge each club to own the goal of winning the Talk Up Toastmasters! Ribbon and the Beat the Clock Ribbon to create a surge in club membership. Finally, I ask our district leaders to create a sense of urgency to charter 15 clubs by March 31. We are working on that many leads right now. Lets charter these clubs and give the gift of Toastmasters! I believed in our district leaders back in July at our District Executive Committee Meeting when you said, I want to be a Presidents Distinguished District, and I still believe in you now! I ask you to reflect on our Districts past achievements to inspire us to embrace excellence. Lombardi said, After all the cheers have died down and the stadium is empty, after the headlines have been written, and after you are back in the quiet of your room and the championship ring has been placed on the dresser and after all the pomp and fanfare have faded, the enduring thing that is left is the dedication to doing with our lives the very best we can to make the world a better place in which to live. Doesnt Toastmasters make our world a better place in which to live? Embracing Excellence,

*** HOT NEWS ***

Greetings fellow Toastmasters! There are hints of spring in the air, which means that Contest Season is upon us again, and that Open Houses are providing an opportunity to show off all the ways that we embrace excellence in our clubs. Were over the halfway mark in our Toastmaster year, so it is a good time to check in on our Distinguished Club Program goals. We check on our clubs health with this easy measure. My crystal ball (online Dashboard) tells me that we already have 52 clubs with at least 5 points, and 60 clubs with at least 20 members! Excellent start, team!

February - Officer Training Each club should be working to have at least four, and hopefully all seven officers trained by February 28. If you still need training, check with your club President to arrange it for you.

February & March - Dues Renewals It is time for all the Treasurers to begin collecting dues. Tip Treasurers can send a note out from the clubs website to all members. As dues come in, remember that you can enter dues online as soon as members pay. We do not have to wait for all members to reply, to begin to submit dues online. Clubs will be recognized on the District Website that achieve at least 85% renewals by March 31. Renew early, and see your clubs name in lights! Starting with April, each club needs at least 8 members. If you are in a smaller club, there is no better time to advertise your club, and warmly welcome visitors. Have those membership packets ready!

April - Distinguished Dance Award Reach Distinguished or better by April 18th and your club wins a prize at the May Conference! Keep dancing to the Disco, Salsa or Polka beat to win a prize. Clubs that achieve Distinguished, Select Distinguished or Presidents Distinguished by April 18th will be awarded with a Toastmasters gift certificate. Win $10, $20 or $30 for your club. How can you help? Invite a friend to visit and join your club Complete one of the projects you are working on, and give to your VPE to submit Participate at club meetings Renew on time

Anytime - Mentor of the Month The next winners are in! Congratulations to Todd Bollinger, Creda Nowlin and Darin Deterra for each ones contribution to their clubs and fellow members. See their stories on our website, in the Mentor (Continued on next page) District 33

(Continued from above)

of the Month section. Each mentor and their club win a $25 TI gift certificate as a thank you! http://d33.toastmastersclubs.org/Mentor_of_the_Month.html

*** Whats Ahead *** Coming Soon! Spring Conference Oxnard, CA (Division B) May 2 & 3 Clubs, Areas and Divisions are all dancing and speaking up a storm, as members participate in the International and Tall Tale Contests. Details are on the District Website. Conferences help to keep us connected across the miles, allowing us to make new friends and keep us energized. Whether you are a member for a week or a half a century, there is something for everyone. Bring your own ruby slippers for dancing on Friday night!

Lorrie Linnert-Dunford, DTM Lt. Governor Marketing 2013 2014

The District 33 Marketing Team is on fire in February and March! Please welcome the two newest clubs to District 33! The Water Spouts, Club #3653176 in Area G-2 charted on February 5, 2014 and Pro Talk Toastmasters, Club #3640220 in Area J-3 chartered on February 10, 2014. Paperwork is in process for Renaissance Speakers Las Vegas in Area H-1; Little Brave Toastmasters at Carrington College in Area C-3 and Seal The Deal and Winton Ireland in Area F-4. The Marketing Team led by Kathy Choate, Katy Porter, Debby Baker, and me is following up on club leads from the Area and Division Governors, planning kick off meetings and building teams to help these new charterlings on their path to success. We expect clubs to be chartered in all of the nine divisions in District 33! Talk to other members of your club, especially your new members! Do they have any suggestions for new clubs? Is there a day/time when the community would support a club? Are there corporations (even your own) who would benefit from a Toastmasters club? District 33 is Embracing Excellence and meeting our District Mission to build new clubs and assist all clubs in achieving excellence. We are currently midway through our second membership contest sponsored by Toastmasters International, Talk Up Toastmasters. Clubs who add 5 or more new, dual or reinstated members between February 1 and March 31 will receive recognition by the District and Toastmasters International, a ribbon for the club banner and 10% off the clubs next order at the Toastmasters International Store. Plan a club membership contest with a prize to the winner who brings the most guests to the meeting and who also join the club. Have an open house or other special event to attract new members to your club. Would you like to infuse your club with 10-12 new members? Conduct a Speechcraft! Your Division Governor has received information on using Speechcraft to grow membership in your club. Basically, a Speechcraft is a 4-8 week workshop conducted by Toastmasters in your club for non-Toastmasters. A fee can be charged to cover the cost of materials. The club can offer a money-back guarantee If the participant attends 7 of 8 meetings and does not feel they have received the full value of the workshop, they can ask for his/her money back. At the end of the Speechcraft, the participants are invited to join the club. Their dues are paid for the first 6 months (this was included in the fee) and they get credit for the first 3 speeches in the Competent Communicator manual. There is additional information on this fabulous Toastmasters program on the District 33 website: http://d33.toastmastersdistricts.org. Seven new club coaches have been appointed since the Fall Conference and Maria Azevedo, the District 33 Club Coach Coordinator is doing a wonderful job training our coaches. This brings our total to 15 club coaches appointed this year for thirteen clubs. Our goal is to have club coaches trained and appointed to all clubs with 12 or fewer members who request a coach. If your club wishes to have a coach, please contact me. Membership renewals are due by March 31. Remember that each club must now have a minimum of 8 renewals submitted to be in good standing. Thank you for all your efforts! We are Embracing Excellence in all that we do!

District Club Website Of the Month! Clubs have requested my support to provide the best possible, most inviting, welcoming homepage that a club website could, attracting visitors to the club. I offered suggestions. I am not the most creative, artistic person to determine what would attract a guest to visit your club. I suggested video, information about your club, why join toastmasters, free food, a party, open house, special guest speaker, invite the mayor to speak and invite the press to provide video coverage. Nominations are open to select the most artistic, guest friendly homepage to venerate by our membership as District 33 Club Website of the Month. I ask you to search club websites in District 33 (but you can steal ideas from other districts). Submit the club website address (URL) by email. I will form a review committee and our selection of the winner of the month is final. Please feel free to submit your clubs website for consideration. genedtm@hotmail.com February Club Website of the Month: slomotion.toastmastersclubs.org Please review this website and send me your vote for Marchs Club Website of the Month.

Follow us on

First, Happy New Year! Although the Toastmaster Year has yet to end; however, it seems to be the appropriate time to reflect back on past performance, look forward to events of the future, and give appreciation to those who assisted in reaching our goals. Looking back, Division A made both significant improvements and outstanding achievements as enumerated below. 1. In our first TLI in July, officer participation increased from 67 to 70%. 2. Dave Sauer advanced from the Division Speech contest to become the 1st place winner of District 33 Humorous Speech contest. 3. Division A hosted the 40th District Conference this past November. Ann Hill and those assisting did a fantastic job in staging this gala event. Also, Shonna Shearson and Olaf Landsgaard were stellar in their roles as Toastmasters for each of the speech contests. 4. Malou Guerrero-Lee, Janice Wallace, Judi Olson, and Flora Turner all earned DTM awards and Leona Byrne was the recipient of the Community Superstar Award. 5. Because of member attendance at the Fall Conference, the Division received the Milo Graham award. Looking forward, the following goals are of great importance. 1. We must grow our membership in terms of club expansion and club growth. Currently, the Division has 24 active clubs; nine of these Clubs are at risk of becoming inactive with 9 members or less. 2. We must prepare for change. In April, active membership increases from 6 to 8 members. Later, a revitalized education is expected to be scheduled to unfold. Finally, I would like to express appreciation for the work being done by our Area Governors, Club Officers and members. Your participation remains pivotal for our Clubs, Areas, Division and District to continue moving in the right direction excellence. and in the pursuit of embracing Dan Murray, DTM

Division B Governor

The Contest and a Growing Division

As Spring springs we thirst for water, but not for Distinguished Clubs. Many Clubs in the Division are slugging it out in the quest for Distinguished status, as are our Areas. By last count, eight clubs have reached Distinguished or better status, with four clubs needing one more goal to be there.

The credit for this has to go to our very diligent Area Governors. They are Fern Vacca B1, Patty Sanchez B2, Paul Grossgold B3, and Cherie Aldridge B4. Fern is serving her second term as an Area Governor. Patty, Paul, and Cherie their first.
Were also in the middle of Contest season, with Areas B2-B3 completing their Contest this past weekend. The Area B4 Contest is just a few days away, and the Area B1 Contest coming up in just over a week.

These three Contests will be followed by the Division B Contest - the West Ventura County Championships - just around the corner on March 15th. In all, we will have had four Saturdays of Contests in a row when all is said and done. Which brings up the subject of a very dedicated volunteer: Camarillo Evenings Ken Smith. How dedicated? Consider this: at the Area B2-B3 Contest Ken was Chief Sergeant at Arms, for the B4 Contest. He is serving as Chief Judge, at the B1 Contest and also as Contest Chair. As for the Division B Contest, he repeats as Chief Judge. Whats also nice is that he is dedicated to doing things right not cutting any corners. Next time you see Ken thank him. We couldnt do it without him.

Pray for rain!

Division C Governor
Monica Aiken, DTM Courageous Communicators of Division C! Champions of Truth, Education, and FUN!! The Area Governors are hard at work putting their contests together. Our contest season is upon us and st Division Cs kickoff for our Area Contests begins on March 1 . Contest information can be found on our

District 33 Toastmasters website (http://d33.toastmastersdistricts.org), once on our page, choose your Division and you will see the contest flyers, you will need to scroll down a bit, and you will also be able to print them out from the site. Please go out and support your favorite speaker or all the speakers. Attending an Area, Division, or District contest helps you make many more connections than you would in your own club, it also allows you the chance to grow when participating in such events whether you are a speaker or just helping out with a role for the contest. I highly encourage it!! I remember stepping outside of my club was a little scary, but hey, I have been in Leadership now for 4 years and I STILL LOVE IT!! If I had never taken that first step I might not have realized how much more Toastmasters has to offer!! Education is key! Our Division C team is dedicated to Truth, Education and FUN, we will ensure everyone is aware of the rules clubs that may not know all the rules. are a learning various rules and educate We organization, so it takes time to learn all the but my team is patient and is willing to help educate we are needed. and regulations, wherever

Division D Governor
Guy Dawson, ACS, ALB The Dynamics of Distinguishing Division D

Now that are more than halfway through the Toastmaster year, Division D is bustling with excitement and anticipation as we head into the contest season. The International and Tall Tales contests will bring us together and be a showcase of the skills that our members have developed by following the Toastmasters educational system. Which splendid Division D speakers will represent us at the in District Conference May? Only time will tell and we will definitely have a lot of fun on the journey. The dynamics of Distinguishing Division D are always changing in 2013/2014. Several of our clubs are reorganizing under different names and expanding opportunities for more people to become a part of Toastmasters. Our kick-off meetings have been very successful in sharing the virtues of Toastmasters and helping the new clubs build strong foundations. Ultimately, we feel that the adjustments we have made will produce positive results for the members of our division. How important is it to have a thorough understanding of the Distinguished Club Program? The Division D Area Governors are earning PHDs in the workings of the DCP and all of their hard work is paying off. Nearly half of the clubs in Division D are within a few goals of becoming Distinguished. I cant express how proud I am of Area D1 Governor Fresia Aguedelo CC, Area D2 Governor Verda Varner ATM-G, Gene Puffer ACB and Bob Scoble ACB, ALB for their commitment to empowering through education. We still have a lot of work to do before June 30 and our sails are set on the course of high achievement. The servant leaders of Division D will continue to share the knowledge and experience that has been so freely given to them with others. Every Toastmaster member deserves to receive the best that our organization has to offer.

Engaging Excellence In Everything We Do

Engaging Excellence throughout Division E continues to work for us, and brings less experienced
Toastmasters into new leadership roles. Their success is ensured by providing a mentor with experience in their new role.

Division E Area Governors Julie Boyce, Joe Purdy, Patrick Hardy, Christine Campos, Cynthia Holm, and Nathan Ohren have shown excellence in their roles, seeking out mentors as needed. In turn, they challenge area club members to assist them in various roles that are new to themespecially in coordinating area speech contests. Likewise, help from mentors is provided when requested. Result: more up- and- coming Toastmaster leadersone of whom (Maria Millsaps) is planning to serve as Area Gov. next term!
th We invite you to join Areas 6 will all at us for a triple area contest! 3, 4, and hold their contests one event on Saturday, March 15 , at Citrix, 7414 Hollister Ave. in Goleta (near Santa Barbara) at 8:15am. Honor and Integrity!

Our division theme is Honor and Integrity. We will continue to honor our club members with the support to assist them to populate their club with new members through integrity.

The Division H contest is arriving soon on April 12, and the area contests start at the end of February. Our area governors are diligently training the remaining officers. Division H has had challenges in membership renewals, and saving charters from going over the edge. We have installed some club coaches for clubs under the 12-member mark. The team of accomplished Toastmasters has helped our division with exhausted collaborating efforts to bring back the memberships in the clubs needing more than 8 people to gain the DCP point. I am proud to hold all these people as my friends and mentors to assist to keep our division strong.

Our past Division G Governor Ms. Sara Pomare is busy with organizing and forming a new bilingual club in Fresno, we wish her well and offer all of our support.

The early spring weather is a buzz with bees pollinating Greatness for our Area Governors Bernice, Janmarie, Jagannath and Cheyne who are busy organizing their respective Area Speech Contest this month. Judging from a few of the themes that have I have caught wind of, I cant wait for the big shows to begin! Thank you Governors and support teams! Your Area commitment and enthusiasm to make your contest a successful and memorable experience has inspired all of Division G.
I would like to invite all of District 33 to attend our Division G Speech Contest on April 5th with a 50s theme and bar-b-que; a little something different and a memorable experience for all who attend!

In closing, I must mention that I am truly honored to be a part of this dynamic Division and grateful for the support from District Officers, our immediate past Division Governor Linda Sims, Governors, Club Presidents and friends. Area

Strive To Excel!

Hitting the ground running in 2014!

Division J Area 3 is starting a new club, Pro-Talk Toastmasters in West Lake Village in 2014. Very inspiring! There is a potential to start another club in Division J in the coming months. Division J has jump-started the New Year with a grand success of Officers Training on Jan 4th. All 23 clubs have a minimum of four officers trained. We have currently achieved overall 84% officers trained with nine clubs that have all 7 officers trained, and the remaining 14 clubs have 4 to 6 officers trained. Exceptional performance by all clubs in achieving very high percentage club officers trained from our scheduled trainings alone. We are positive to achieve 100% officers trained by end of February. Where we stand on our Membership? We have 93% retention as of now, and we are optimistically hopeful to boost that number. We have seven clubs that are strong with a charter membership of 20 or higher. There are five clubs that are closer to 20 memberships. The remaining 13 clubs are cautiously eager to have a net growth of 5 members. Our Division Public Relations Officers are currently strategizing to work with club public relation officers to help the clubs in increasing their membership. There are five clubs that are astounding with distinguished status inclusive of three clubs as Select Distinguished. Five to seven clubs can potentially become Presidents Distinguished. There is a very high chance for another nine clubs to become distinguished. All our Area Governors are giving their best efforts to make their clubs successful to finish strong with distinguished status or higher. All the clubs are conducting their club contests this month. Our area contests will be held in the first half of the month March. Preparations for our Division Contest are underway; join us for a spectacular display of Tall Tales and International speeches from our area winners on March 29th at the Theatre on the Hill at the Hillcrest Center for the Arts, Thousand Oaks. Online registration is open for early bird discounted charge on the Division J website: http://www.divisionjd33.org/contests/division-j-contest Looking forward to seeing you all at the contest! Candidate for Lt. Governor Education & Training, Deborah Baker ACS, ALS
The Toastmasters program has been instrumental in bringing about many changes in both my career and personal life. Through the Toastmasters program I have gained much needed confidence to face new and challenging issues. As a professional using my Toastmasters high performance leadership project, I was able to implement and add the infrastructure for a new business niche for our accounting firm. This brought a new dimension of respect by my peers for the Toastmasters program and what it is capable of accomplishing. As Division F Governor in 2012, I was honored to receive the Division Governor of the Year award. The most valuable lesson for me during my term as Division Governor was to not be afraid to dream big, set my goals high, and let everyone participate together. It was a formula that worked well in Division F. That year we chartered five new Toastmasters clubs when a new club had not been started in Division F in over five years prior. 2012 started a momentum for growth in the Division that has continued to this day. As Lt. Governor Education and Training for District 33, it will be my privilege to bring that passion for personal growth and the confidence to succeed as we strive toward our District leadership goals. Let me help you succeed by setting your goals for your future.

Nine Points on why Dan Murray should be the next Lt. Governor Marketing Well-run, content-rich meetings
You have to have both elements

Recharge & Revitalize!

I want you to know why I am qualified to lead the district as Lieutenant Governor Marketing! I have a DEAL for you. Here they are:

The Distinguished Program

Its underutilized. Use to grow your Club

Dedicated to portray the vision of the district Enthusiastic to take up the challenges to the next the level Aspiring Leader will lead YOU to success
Nine years ago I joined a toastmasters club that had 30 members. It was an amazing first few years going through my speeches on my CC and AC manuals. Every time I gave my speech I was challenged to give my best performance, because I had 20 members in the audience on an average in every meeting. There is something magical that happens to you when you are on a stage with a bigger audience in front of you; you no longer Practice, you start Performing! Best performance leads to success! We can all achieve our success and dreams of Public Speaking if we already have a larger audience at a club level with 20 or more members. Is it difficult to have a membership of 20 or more in a club? Maybe sometimes. Dont we have ups and downs in our life, whether it is in our career, finance, or relationship? When we are down, are we down always? When we start asking these questions to ourselves, we will find an answer. Think about it; every time we are down or encounter a failure, what do we do, we start recharging and regaining control of ourselves, and take a stride forward with a new thinking, new idea and a new plan of action. It is a change, which is a constant entity of our life to become better and better and better. The principle is the same with a toastmasters club. When a club starts facing challenges to retain active members, infuse your energy and enthusiasm to revitalize the club. Engage members to unleash their potential and have a fun & entertaining meeting. Experienced members give back to clubs by guiding, directing and prompting the newer members to step forward. Design, develop and implement new strategies for better outcome. Newer members and newer leaders can invigorate the club with creativity to nurture their own aspirations and professional development. I do not deny saying it is easier said than done! If we all can work together, collectively as a team, we will share the joy of achievement! We achieve our purpose of building successful clubs, in turn, to fulfill our own aspiration of becoming a better speaker and an effective communicator. Lets achieve our success by building Fail-Proof successful clubs by Recharging and Revitalizing the Clubs. I am a Dedicated, Enthusiastic and an Aspiring Leader.

Candidate for Division A Governor, Bradford Welsh, ACB, ALB

I remember my first experience with Toastmastersa Speechcraft in the summer of 2011. I stumbled, used filler words, depended on notes, and minimally engaged the audience. When I received my first evaluation, I knew I needed Toastmasters. I was hooked and joined Y Talkers Toastmasters in Lancaster, CA. Through manual speeches and honest feedback, I grew as a communicator. I then stepped into a leadership role and my focus changedmy efforts were concentrated on serving the organization while developing the communication and leadership skills of my fellow members. My first club officers position was Vice President-Membership. Membership went from 18 to 28 by June 30, 2013. Next, I stepped into the role of President and the club is on track to be Presidents Distinguished with 10 of 10 DCP points. While still serving in Y Talkers this year, I accepted the position of Area A-2 Governor, which is outside my own clubs region. The clubs in Area A-2 have embraced excellence in membership growth and retention, educational awards, and club officer training. As Division A Governor, I will focus on strengthening the communication and leadership skills of our officers and members, embracing the Toastmasters brand, growing membership, and recognizing achievement. Division A needs someone experienced in organizational change as we transition to the Revitalized Educational Program. My goal is to empower each area governor to support their clubs and their members during this changeover.

Only together will we succeed!

Candidate for Division B Governor, Martha Navarette, DTM

Martha Navarrete joined Toastmasters International almost five years ago. Soon after becoming a member, she realized how Toastmasters was a valuable investment for her personal development while offering an opportunity to meet outstanding people in her community. She enjoys the benefits that Toastmasters has provided her in leadership and communication while engaging her in her passion to serve others. Martha is currently a member of three clubs: Ventura Sunrise where she attends as a Toastmaster, Real Talk where she assists as a coach and Ventura PowerPoint where she is the PowerPoint Instructor. Martha has assumed several leadership roles for her clubs and was honored as the Area B2 Spark Plug of the Year in 2012 and in 2013 for directly impacting clubs that were in danger of closing. Region 2 represents more than 1000 clubs in the states of Oregon, Hawaii and California. During her oneyear commitment, Martha is focused on the redevelopment of Toastmasters Educational Program worldwide. I am humbly seeking your support to achieve the DTM Level in Communication and Leadership. I am excited about the future of Toastmasters International and am confident that as Division B Governor, 2014-2015, I will contribute to the organization by reaching new levels of member engagement.
