digitalize cargo items and to create a realistic 3D model for the simulation of cargo lifting, handling and bedding on the vessels. The planner puts in all available information about each item weight, dimensions, special handling instructions, and method statements issued by the transport engineers for sophisticated cargo such as heavy lifts or overdimensioned units. Certainly the order of loading and discharging also has to be taken into account. The result is a plan which offers the best solution for stowing the maximum amount of cargo at a minimum of cost and without any damage or risk during transportation. When all the planning is done, the supercargo comes into play. He is attending the vessel at every port where cargo is handled. About a week before the vessels arrival, Rokotyanskyy

eing a supercargo at Rickmers-Linie in Hamburg, Valeriy Rokotyanskyy is part of our team of experts for break-bulk, project and heavy lift cargoes. Supercargoes are members of our Operations Department, which usually get involved once cargo shipments are booked, sometimes even much earlier when a piece is still under construction. The responsible Stowage Planners at the Rickmers-Linie offices either in Hamburg, Shanghai or Houston create a stowage plan for the vessel. In Hamburg and Shanghai this is supported by the use of RICOSYS (Rickmers Cargo Operations Simulation System), our stateof-the-art cargo management system, which is used to

reviews the stowage plan and discusses all relevant information with the planner. He gives his feedback for further adjustments and gets geared up for his work on site. A day before the vessels arrival it is time for Rokotyanskyy to be at the port. There he inspects all the cargo that is to be shipped. Has everything arrived? Does the cargo meet its expected specifications regarding size, packing, safety requirements, etc.? Are all necessary documents ready? If not, the supercargo contacts the planner or line manager depending on the situation to find a solution.

covered by the Rickmers-Linie office in Hamburg are the final cargo documents issued and sent to the next Rickmers-Linie Operations Department, so the supercargo there can take over. Back at the office, Rokotyanskyy will take part in a review meeting with all Rickmers Group parties involved in this process to discuss what went well or should be improved. Besides Rokotyanskyy there are six more supercargoes working for Rickmers-Linie in Hamburg, five in Houston, covering the American ports, and four in Shanghai for all Asian ports. Rokotyanskyy and most of the other supercargoes are master mariners and thereby benefit from their own experience at sea. At the age of ten, he worked aboard a small cruise vessel for the first time. In 1989 Rokotyanskyy graduated from Odessa State Marine Academy and sailed as 4th, 3rd, 2nd and chief officer and, from 1999 to 2005, as master. In 2005 he joined Rickmers-Linie Shanghai and moved to Rickmers-Linie Hamburg in 2006.

He also talks to the terminal employees, stevedores, lashing inspectors, the vessels captain and crew to discuss all relevant topics, tasks and possible changes always striving for the highest quality and efficiency of all actions and avoiding extra costs. He issues the program of the vessels port stay and the estimated time of departure, takes pictures and prepares documentation for the port of discharge, exchanges information with the office in Hamburg and makes sure that sophisticated cargo is handled and lashed exactly as per method statement. When a customer arrives to supervise his My job is to make cargo, it is also the supercargo who is his counterpart. My job is to make condition as loaded sure that all cargo reaches its destination in the same Photo: Axelle Georges good condition as loaded, Rokotyanskyy explains. When all cargo is successfully loaded and/or discharged, Rokotyanskyy issues a stowage plan that displays the status at departure and a pre-stowage plan for the next port. But work is not done for him yet he ies to the next port of call to repeat all actions and handle further cargo there. Only when the vessel sails from its last port

RICOSYS

RICLASH the integrated cargo securing calculation module gives advice to the experts in the stowage planning department and to the supercargoes supervising lashing and securing operations on board. Germanischer Lloyd
This lashing module is approved by GL with certificate-no. 59111 HH.

Worlds First 3D Cargo Management System

RICOSYS consists of three main modules: RICSIM is used for feasibility studies and to simulate loading / lifting operations. RICSTOW represents the shipping industrys first virtual 3D stowage planning system for breakbulk, heavy lift and project cargo. RICSTAB is the tool for the calculation of vessel stability and stress factors. All three modules are connected to a joint stowage database called RICDAT .

Optimizing Cargo Flow

ickmers-Linie constantly strives to improve service quality and to increase overall efficiency. This has inspired us to develop a software solution that changes stowage planning and cargo management completely. Cargo items are digitalized to a realistic CAD model for the simulation of cargo lifting, handling and bedding on our vessels - for the benefit of an optimized cargo ow with a reduced risk of damage to the cargo.

08

cargoeswecarry

RICOSYS enables us to simulate cargo handling during loading and discharge in 3D. Feasibility studies can easily be visualized for assessment and for the pre-planning of the loading operation.

RICOSYS - Five main advantages 01. 02. 03. 04. 05.

Feasibility sudies are much easier and more precise than ever Important information for optimized lashing can be gained at an early stage and findings can be incorporated in the construction phase of the project cargo unit Less interference with port routines, more efficient port operations Testing and simulation is done by computer, rather than live on stage Better cargo safety, reduced risk of damage

Rickmers in Japan

Rickmers in the Land of the Rising Sun

ickmers (Japan) Inc. was registered as a Japanese corporation on 1 June 2006. Prior to this, all of Rickmers business in Japan had been handled through an agent. Establishing the subsidiary reects Rickmers-Linies long-term commitment to its Japanese customers and the significance of the Japanese market. Create one strong team with one ultimate goal - to increase the sales of the Round-The-World Pearl String Service and to broaden our Japanese customer base. This was our mission in 2006 and we started with a

team of six, led by Yoshiaki Kawabuchi. Over the years we have tripled our sales, increased our customer base significantly and gained considerable recognition in the local market. We have become a major player in the Japanese break bulk, project and heavy lift market and acquired the majority market share from Japan to the USA. We were proud to transport Kibo, the Japanese Experiment Module for the International Space Station, from Yokohama to Port Canaveral. Other contracts have included rubber-tyred gantry cranes, coke drums, transformers, reactors, generators, presses, columns and a considerable amount of equipment that is ultimately used for the production of carbon fibre for Boeings 787 Dreamliner. Together with Eastern Car Line (ECL), we secured a multi-year contract with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for for shipment of windmill equipment to the USA.

Securing such contracts demands enormous effort from everyone and involves months, sometimes years, of follow-up with customers. Rickmers Japan was heavily involved with expansion efforts in the Trans Pacific trade since 2006 in cooperation with ECL. Sadly, 2010 began with the passing of our CEO, Kawabuchi-san. In June 2010, we found ourselves fortunate to have convinced Munechika (Mark) Shiba to join the management team in Japan as Representative Director, with Richard Stinchcombe taking over as CEO. Marks extensive experience with Maersk has proved invaluable to the team. In 2010 we were successful in securing the Agency of Hyundai Merchant Marines project division in Japan. In September 2010 we moved to a larger but equally convenient location in Tamachi, Tokyo. We are now a team of ten; one larger team and one goal!

The Round-the-World Pearl String Service

ur innovative Round-the-World Pearl String Service which was inaugurated in 2003 is the backbone of our services. With the unique concept of offering fortnightly sailings, fast transit times and reliable schedules, the Pearl String Service has revolutionized shipping of heavy-lift and project cargoes, enabling customers to plan their cargo ows more easily.

The base ports served every fortnight are Hamburg, Antwerp, Genoa, Singapore, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City or Haiphong, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Dalian, Xingang, Qingdao, Masan, Kobe or Yokohama or Nagoya, New Orleans, Houston, Philadelphia and again Hamburg. Further ports close to this route are added according to demand. The Pearl String Service is served by nine identical 30,000 dwt purpose-built Superflex Heavy Multi-Purpose Container (MPC) ships, which were designed primarily with project cargo in mind and constructed in China between 2002 and 2004. The vessels are equipped with four large cranes, the two heaviest of which can be twinned for a lifting capacity of up to 640 tonnes. The main hatches are 32m in length to allow long loads to be accommodated below deck. Adjustable tweendecks allow for variations in cargo height. Furthermore, a dehumidifying system controls the air in all holds, ensuring protection from condensation for all types of cargo.
