Painfully Sweet
Sue always had a sweet tooth. She liked to eat chocolates, sweets and cakes. One night, she was burning the midnight oil to prepare for her examinations. As she studied, she kept shoving jellybeans into her mouth. A few weeks later, she had a toothache. To avoid getting a scolding, she told her mother a cock and bull story about how she got her toothache. However, her mother knew that she was lying. Tom was a healthy young man but he was a simpleton. When it was time for him to earn a living, his father could not get him any work. Finally, he became a herdsman, looking after his fathers three buffaloes.

Tom found it difficult to distinguish one buffalo from another. Once he had put his fathers buffaloes in the field, he could not trace them among the buffaloes of other herdsmen. The other herdsmen knew this and they took advantage of it. They just lazed on the grass, laughing and joking, and whenever they saw a buffalo wandering out of the field, they shouted, Tom, Tom, there goes your buffalo! Tom, thinking every buffalo that wandered out was his, spent the whole day chasing and catching the buffaloes. When evening came, he had to wait till the other herdsmen had taken away all their buffaloes before he could leave with his buffaloes. As a result, he arrived home late. This happened for many days until his anxious father found out the trick played on his son. So the next day the father tied some leaves on the horns of his three buffaloes and said, Now, my son, look at the buffaloes carefully and remember that only a buffalo which has leaves round its horns is your responsibility. Do not tire yourself by herding all the buffaloes in the field. That morning, whenever the other herdsmen shouted, Hey, Tom, there goes your animal, Tom glanced at the buffalos horns, and if he saw no leaves on its horns, he just sat down and took no further notice. However, by afternoon, Toms secret had been discovered by his companions. They at once tied leaves onto the horns of their buffaloes, too. As a result, poor Tom again spent the entire afternoon chasing all the stray buffaloes. He arrived home late again. His anxious father had been waiting for him at the gate of his farm. Tom complained, Father, all was well in the morning but by afternoon, leaves have grown on the horns of the other buffaloes too.

Road accidents are common although there are many safety and preventive measure in place. Accidents have occurred on quiet roads as well as busy highways. There are two different types of water buffaloes. The Swamp can be found from the Philippines to West India and the River can be found in Egypt and Europe. The water 68 Examination 8 animal. Most buffaloes are found in 10 countries where cultivated crops and pastures are limited. Forest fodder and waste residues make up the majority of a buffalos diet. The mortality rate of buffalo calves is high. In the first two months of its life, a calf is highly dependent on its mother milk. However, demand for this milk is on the rise. Without ample nutrition, buffalo calves suffer from virus and bacteria attacks. At present, more than 5% of the worlds milk comes from buffaloes. Compared to cows milk, it is 25 higher in fats and solids, which gives it a richer flavour. There is also more protein in buffalos milk. Many people are willing to pay more for buffalos milk than cows milk. Buffalos milk is used to make ice-cream, cheese, yoghurt, butter and evaporated milk. In India, buffalos milk is used in many recipes. Italian Mozzarella cheese also makes use of buffalos milk. Besides its taste, buffalos milk is also more economical 30 than cows milk as less of it is needed to make cheese. This demand for buffalos milk has caused more than ten thousand calves in India to die. Today, most buffaloes are kept for milk with only the males being used as tractors. If a buffalo manages to live, it is actually a healthy animal. Unlike other life stock that often succumbs to illnesses in hot and humid environments, the buffalo is not as susceptible to illnesses. 35 The water buffalo is also used as a source of meat. Previously, buffaloes were only slaughtered for their meat at the end of their productive lives. Today, many buffaloes are reared specifically for their meat. International demand for this tender and palatable meat has increased and buffaloes from India, Pakistan and Australia are exported to Hong Kong to be slaughtered. Today, markets are also opening up for 40 leather goods and horn products.

In moments like these, I become the student my mind filled with childlike anticipation and my students, in turn, become the master. The verbalizations of their thoughts are so full of imagination, fantasy and creativity that this exchange becomes an enjoyment. Perhaps there is as much for me to learn from them as they from me. Two things are obvious how some students have arrived at this state of mastery. Firstly, their tremendous acquisition of knowledge and the ability to make connection through this knowledge is highly remarkable. Secondly, and quite evidently, they have interest in what they persevere and are apparently gifted. Which attribute precedes the other, though, I cannot be too sure. Psychologists over the years have agreed on one thing, the like of which Canadian journalist Malcolm Gladwell mentioned in his book Outliers: The Story of Success: To be exceptionally good, or to reach the state of professional, one must put in something like 10,000 hours of effort in the practice. Though not immediately and readily comparable, the moral is nevertheless the same: practice, practice, practice. This book is written specially for my students and others alike who also enjoy mathematics.

Source A: The Sejarah Melayu on Singapura

Whos Who
Munshi Abdullah was a famous Malay writer who also served as an interpreter to Raffles. Wang Dayuan was a well-known Chinese merchant who had visited Southeast Asia in the 14th century. He had written about Singapore as a thriving centre for trade. Sang Nila Utama was a ruler of Palembang who founded Singapura. Parameswara was a Palembang prince who killed the ruler of Singapore. He later founded Melaka which became the most important trading centre in this part of the world in the 15th century. Temagi was the ruler of Temasek who was killed by Parameswara.

The Sejarah Melayu, which is believed to have been written around the 16th century, has mentioned about Singapura being an important trading centre. This aroused the jealousy of the neighbouring Majapahit ruler who waged a war against Singapura. Source B: Wang Dayuans account on Temasek Wang Dayuan, a Chinese merchant who traveled to Southeast Asia in the 14th century, wrote about Temasek being an exporter of unique products and was a famous place visited by foreigners. However, traders faced piracy in this area.

Important Points
Artefacts, written accounts and visual evidence have been used to find out about pre-1819 Singapore. By cross-referencing the different sources historians are able to draw conclusions on pre-1819 Singapore. The Sejarah Melayu or the Malay Annals has an anecdote of the founding of Singapura by Sang Utama. This segment explains how Temasek became known as Singapura. The Sejarah Melayu has also mentioned that Singapura was a thriving trading centre in the 16th century. This even resulted in Majapahit waging a war on Singapura as the Majapahit ruler was envious about the growth of Singapura. Wang Dayuan was a Chinese merchant who traveled in this region during the 14th century. He wrote Dao Yi Zhi Lue, a book that has information on Singapore. He claims that Singapura was a busy trading centre in the 1330s and 1340s. Wang Dayuan wrote that many foreigners visited Temasek and there were some Chinese settlers. Singapore exported some unique products like hornbill casques. He also highlighted the problem of piracy in the waters around Singapore. Artefacts like old coins, stoneware and gold ornaments have been unearthed by archaeologists in Singapore. Fragments of blue and white porcelain show that Singapore had links with the Yuan and Ming dynasties. 15th century Vietnamese and Thai porcelain have also been unearthed showing Singapores contacts with Thailand and Vietnam. The old name for Singapore was Temasek. It means sea port. This shows that the information gathered from the various sources about Singapore being a thriving trading centre must be reliable.

THE PRIMARY SCHOOL LEAVING EXAMINATION (PSLE) is a national examination taken by all primary school students in Singapore near the end of the sixth year, before they leave for secondary school. It is administered by the Ministry of Education. This nationwide examination tests the English language, mother tongue languages (Chinese, Malay, or Tamil, but pupils can also offer some other South Asian languages too: Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu), Mathematics and Science. Each subject paper is around 2 hours long, with this time varying by fifteen minutes, except for certain components of language subjects. Multiple-choice questions are tested using a standardized optical answer sheet (OAS) that uses optical mark recognition for detecting answers. The PSLEs format and omnipresence in the Singapore education system itself not only make it an examination, but a national culture and system in itself. The PSLE is a culmination of primary education in Singapore, and its format can be found in primary school examinations besides the PSLE itself, even from primary one.
