Guidelines for the Statistics Research Presentation

Practice. You will just be given five (5) minutes for your presentation. The succeeding minutes (usually 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the gravity of the needed clarifications) are allotted for the panelists questions. However, if any member of the panel interrupted your presentation within the 10 to 15-minute period to have his/her inquiry, do not be surprised. It usually happens. Although this is a group work, let two to three of the members do the talking during the presentation part. Others will just be there, as well, for the panels inquiries. Avoid cramming. By the time that your group is already called, you have to be there in less than a minute. Be sure to prepare five (5) copies of your groups research paper. Staple it. This is to make sure that each member of the panel has a copy of your research paper while your group is presenting. All your researches will be asked to be in hard bound (as a class; one hard bound per section) only right after the presentation. Prepare also soft (SPSS form) and hard copies. Put the hard copy on the last page of your research paper. Be reminded that the Abstract and the body of your research should be in single space already. Be sure to bring all the copies of your manuscripts (all the drafts that your Statistics professor have corrected) and the data (you may bring the materials for demonstration purposes if it is just possible). There might be instances that a member of the panel will seek to take a look at your raw data thoroughly. Relax, unless you have contaminated the data [Contamination of data means tampering or making the necessary changes or modifications of the data to provide the expected output]. Be the expert of your research. Your research is your work so it is assumed that you have mastered everything that is written there. Any member who failed to answer a panelists question, once asked, will cause the deduction to the entire groups score. However, if you know the answer to a panelists question, volunteer and answer it for the group, unless the question is personally addressed to your member. Your research is for Statistics class so master the statistical tests applied. Why that test was performed instead of other statistical tests? Are the statistical tests you used met the assumptions or requirements of the particular statistical test? Have the mastery of the statistical tests you used. Observe the schedule. Your group is expected to be waiting outside the venue, only 5 to 10 minutes before the time of your presentation. Do not be too early and of course, never be late. ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE GROUP ARE EXPECTED TO BE PRESENT. Any member of the group who is absent during the presentation will be getting a zero score in the presentation (10% of your course grade). Prepare a food for the members of the panel. Your class (not per group) has to prepare food for courtesys sake. Expect three members of the panel, but to be sure, provide extra food as few visitors might come over. Have this responsibility taken by the first group to present in your class. Consider the time your class will present. Do not buy breakfast if you will present late in the afternoon.

Guidelines on the Powerpoint Presentation

Only the important parts of the research must be in the Powerpoint presentation. Your Powerpoint presentation must serve only as idiot board so do not put everything there. Sentences are prohibited. Bullets with phrases / keywords are encouraged. The TITLE SLIDE (SLIDE 1) of your Powerpoint presentation must contain the title of your research paper, members of the group, section, and your Statistics professor. Putting the university and the faculty logo will make your research more academic. Succeeding slides must contain the following: INTRODUCTION (SLIDE 2) In bullet form, use one or two slides about your introduction. Quote (with citation), when necessary. You may put related pictures to catch the attention of the panelists. OBJECTIVE (SLIDE 3) Use one slide only. METHOD (SLIDE 4) Use two or three slides. Preferably, bullet the steps of the method of experiment. You may put pictures of the actual experiment so as to show that you REALLY did your experiment. In one bullet, mention the statistical test(s) used. RESULTS (SLIDE 5) One slide only. Preferably, display the results in graph. Make sure that the values (means SEM, p-value(s)) are there. Conclusion from the statistical test must be clear. You may mention the null and alternative hypotheses, and Decision (Reject or Failed to Reject Ho) during the presentation. DISCUSSION (SLIDE 6) - Using one or two slides, state the comparison of your results with your related readings. Do not forget the citations. RECOMMENDATION (SLIDE 7) One slide only.

Except the title slide, each slide of your Powerpoint presentation must have a heading. This is to not confuse the panelists in which part are your members presenting. Be sure to use proper colors. Avoid very bright background for it may irritate any member of the panels eyes. Use presentable fonts. Arial is good. Do not use Times new Roman and the likes. Bold the terms that need emphasis. Contrast the font colors, relative to the background. Make sure that everything in your Powerpoint presentation is readable. Think of the audience at the back of the room. Will they be able to read it? Use a Powerpoint presentation theme. Go over the internet. Very plain Powerpoint presentation is boring. However, your presentation must be formal (not fancy nor wacky). A creatively done Powerpoint presentation is expected. Never use unnecessary images (especially cliparts). Its your choice if your group has decided to use other presentation software (e.g. Prezi). Smile and relax while doing the presentation. Nervousness may trigger any member of the panel to ask several questions. Be polite.
