History of Square Dancing

Square Dancing is focused around couple dancing. These couples are arranged in the shape of a square with each couple acting as a side. With a total of eight dancers this formation gives square dancing its descriptive name. This style of dance can be traced back to the 17th century in England. It was common throughout the European countries. This dance was brought to North America when the first settlers and the immigrant groups that followed, bringing with them their various national dances which are now commonly called folk dances. There is a difference between modern square dance and traditional square dance. In traditional square dancing, there is more of a set pattern, fewer basic movements, and is done to live music. Whereas modern square dancing has more variety of moves due to a caller who can pick any of the basic movements to form the dance sequence for a prerecorded song. This is also known as western square dancing. This is most likely due to the 20th centurys romanticizing of the American Cowboy that was linked to square dancing. This style of dance is held in high regard in America, and nineteen states have declared square dancing their official state dace!

Procedures & Guidelines

Basic knowledge A basic square has 4 couples PALMS RULE: Normally, the man holds palms up, A couple has a man and a woman ladies palms down. This applies to circle, A ladies corner is to her right promenade, etc. However, in a same-sex couple, A mans corner is to his left the right-hand dancer (belle) holds palms down, Each couple has a designated number the left-hand dancer (beau) holds palms up. (1,2,3,4) CIRCLE RULE: If Circle is called without a direction Head couples are numbers 1 and 3 ("Heads lead right and circle to a line" or "Face Side couples are numbers 2 and 4 your corner, circle up two" or "Join hands and The person standing right next to you circle"), the circle is always to the LEFT. and facing the same way is your PASSING RULE: Whenever two dancers are partner walking towards each other and are about to The person across for you in the collide, they shift slightly left, pass RIGHT square is your opposite shoulders, and continue. Sometimes called the Exchanging partners happens through Right Shoulder Rule the Promenade

Rules of Square Dancing DON'T FORGET "A SMILE ON YOUR FACE HELPS YOUR FEET WORK BETTER." BE ON TIME FOR CLUB AND CLASSES: In square dancing, one late couple or person may mean that three other couples or seven people must sit out. DON'T LEAVE EARLY: By leaving early, you are telling the other dancers and caller that you did not have a good time at the dance. GET INTO SQUARES QUICKLY: When the caller announces to square your sets, join the square nearest to you that needs a couple. If you are looking for a square, raise your hand as you move across the floor. If your square is not full, raise your hand with as many fingers extended as couples are needed. BE A GOOD LISTENER: Talking during the course of square dancing is distracting to you and especially others. It makes it difficult for others in the square to "catch" the instructions and hear the music. BE A COURTEOUS DANCER: Always introduce yourself and your partner to others in the square if you don't know them. Thank them for dancing with you after the tip. BE A COOPERATIVE DANCER: It might be said that square dancing is an activity where everyone is responsible for everyone else's happiness. A square is not made up of eight individuals working independently, but rather in one unit TAKE IT EASY: Don't overdo. Square dancing can be strenuous exercise. If you are too tired to dance, sit out BE A FRIENDLY DANCER: "Friendship is square dancing's greatest reward." Take the opportunity to get acquainted with others in the square. Make it a point to dance with as many different dancers as possible each evening. It has been said that "Square dancing is friendship set to music." ENJOY YOURSELF--HAVE FUN: Come to the dance expecting to have a good time.
