Kids build motor skills at Tumbling Time
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
It was a chance for kids to get
excited about exercise when chil-
drens fitness instructor Miss
Jenn visited the Cinnaminson Li-
brary for the librarys most re-
cent Tumbling Time event.
For about an hour on the after-
noon of March 12, children ages 3
to 5 visited the library for a
chance to build their motor skills
and coordination through move-
ment, music, gymnastics and
games.
Jennifer Valdes, operations
manager and instructor with
local childrens fitness company
Tumblin Tots, described the pro-
gram as a traveling fitness class
meant to keep children healthy
and active.
I just travel around to differ-
ent childcare centers in the area
and libraries, Valdes said. Its a
class designed to get kids moving
through music. Its a lot of fun.
Soon, parents sat and watched
as their excited young ones quick-
ly took their seats in a circle in
the middle of one of the librarys
open activity rooms.
Before everyone started to real-
ly move, Valdes made the kids feel
welcome by greeting them indi-
vidually and then moving into a
warm up stretch. She said the job

The following report comes
from Lt. Tim Young at the Cin-
naminson Police Department:
On March 7 at 11:59 p.m., Cin-
naminson Police received a re-
port of criminal mischief at two
local businesses. Merion Caterers
and Paula's Restaurant had ap-
proximately $2,800 worth of dam-
age done to the buildings. There
were obscene words and pictures
spray painted on both buildings.
An employee of Merion Caterers
was able to detain one of the ac-
tors until police arrived.
A male, 18, of Cambridge
Court, and a 17-year-old juvenile
were charged with criminal mis-
chief and were released pending
court.
At approximately 10 p.m. on
March 5, Sgt. Mike Burns of the
Cinnaminson Police Department
was on patrol in the Garden State
Inn. While checking the motel, he
found two warrants for the arrest
of one of the occupants. Burns,
along with other officers,
knocked on the door and made
contact with the suspect. The sus-
pect was placed under arrest for
the two outstanding warrants for
his arrest.
While placing the suspect
under arrest, officers observed
evidence of narcotics use in plain
view. A search of the room was
conducted. Police located numer-
ous items of paraphernalia and a
9mm handgun along with a
loaded magazine.
The suspect, 22, of Pinnafore
Lane, Willingboro, was charged
with unlawful possession of a
handgun, and three counts of
possession of drug parapherna-
lia. The accused was lodged in the
Burlington County Jail in default
of $25,000 bail.

The Sun
Cinnaminson residents now
have some tentative numbers for
what they could be potentially
paying in school taxes for the
2014-2015 school year.
Cinnaminson School District
Business Administrator Thomas
Egan Jr. gave a presentation on
the tentative budget at the special
March 11 board of education
meeting and said total prelimi-
nary appropriations for 2014-2015
budget reached $45.29 million, a
.45 percent or $205,000 increase
from the previous year.
Egan said to reach that figure,
the district would require a 2.85
percent tax levy increase, and he
said the increase would bypass
the state-mandated 2 percent in-
crease cap with automatic adjust-
ments that are built into the
states budgeting software.
Those adjustments were for en-
rollment and health-care costs,
based on enrollment increases
from the current year and district
health insurance costs compared
to the state health benefit plan.
The district would also be using
previously banked cap under the
state law that allows districts to
use any under cap savings from
recent budget years.
With an average Cinnaminson
home assessment of $231,795, the
proposed increase per average
household would be $105.35 a
year.
With Cinnaminson Township
having recently reassessed home
values, Egan determined the av-
erage home assessment number
by taking the total assessed value
for all residential property in Cin-
naminson and dividing it by the
number of homes.
Some of the expenditures in
the budget included continuing
the integrated preschool and
kindergarten program at New Al-
bany Elementary School, an 8
percent increase in bus supplies
and fuel for maintenance vehicles
and buses, replacing three buses
and one maintenance plow truck
and new technology equipment
and a staff member to help with
the Partnership for Assessment
of Readiness for College and Ca-
reers implementation.
The district will also be mov-
ing forward with several mainte-
nance and capital projects that
wont increase taxes due to the
costs being withdrawn from spe-
cial funds designated only for
School district presents tentative
budget with .45 percent increase
please see CAPITAL, page 4
such purposes.
The maintenance projects in-
clude resurfacing the high school
athletic track, updating the me-
chanical parts unit ventilators,
the installation of a buried con-
duit to connect the maintenance
building with the high schools
network and telephone closets,
expanding wireless coverage in
the middle school and the repair
and/or replacement of the high
school weight room air condition-
er.
The capital projects include the
continued installation of security
cameras, one solar scoreboard for
the high school baseball field and
replacing a section of school lock-
ers for the middle school.
Superintendent Salvatore J. Il-
luzzi praised the budget and said
he was impressed with how much
the district was able to save and
keep any tax increases as low as
they were.
When you figure to take this
budget and bring it in at less than
half a percent, .45, its remarkable
in this economy, Illuzzi said. It
shows you the work that Mr. Egan
did with all of the administrative
and supervising staff in order to
do this. The cost to the taxpayer is
obviously less than $9 a month.
Thats the story of this budget.
Illuzzi also said that he thought
it was appropriate for the commu-
nity to know that while the board
had accepted the budget, all that
meant was the board was submit-
ting it to the executive county su-
perintendent and nothing was
final.
The executive county superin-
tendent will meet with Tom and
myself, and well go over this
budget thoroughly, Illuzzi said.
She may take out things what-
ever she returns to the district
will be the budget that the board
will bring to the public for public
hearing scheduled for Tuesday,
April 29. At that point, the board
will continue to hear the commu-
nity on the budget.

terest in her life.
I have a degree in early child-
hood education, and I was a pre-
school teacher for a lot of years.
And then I had my own kid,
Valdes said. I really didnt have
to work for awhile, but then I
started getting into fitness, and I
really enjoyed that.
Valdes then began with two
high-energy songs to get the chil-
dren moving around the room.
She had the children mimicking
her exercise moves, singing along
to the music and using props such
as maracas to make noise and
move around even more. She said
the class was both healthy and ed-
ucational.
I set up an obstacle course for
the kids, teaching them to take
turns and wait their turn,
Valdes said. They have to sit
down on a spot and then we go
one at a time and this way its
kind of teaching them to get pre-
pared for real life where you cant
just run people over.
The lesson seemed to sink in,
as the children in attendance sat
patiently as Valdes set up her ob-
stacle course and invited them
move through one at a time while
the others waited for their turn.
The first half of the obstacle
course consisted of miniature
balance beams placed on the floor
for the kids to walk across with
no danger, and pads on the
ground with pictures showing the
kids to stop to touch their toes or
squat.
Then the kids reached padded
mats next to Valdes, who helped
each child perform a forward
tumble, before they then
leapfrogged over small cones and
finished the course by crawling
through a tunnel.
Valdes said she always likes the
programs she instructs at the li-
brary, and not just because
theyre popular.
I like it because it gets some
people ... to put their kid in a pro-
gram regularly, they can come
here once a month and get their
kids moving and doing something
other than just sitting around,
Valdes said. It gives them a
chance to feel like other kids that
get to do lots of things because
kids are so high energy.
The event finally wound down
with a parachute activity, where
the kids all grabbed the sides of a
parachute and used it to toss
beanbags in the air. Parents also
got in on the action when they
grabbed the parachute and let the
kids huddle underneath.
Parent Victoria Lawrence com-
plimented Valdes and said the
whole experience was great for
her 3-year-old son who is still
learning how to follow directions.
She was very patient and en-
ergetic and fun, Lawrence said.
There are three good words.
Valdes said she just works her
best with whatever group of kids
shes given.
It was such a nice group,
Valdes said. They were such a
nice group of kids. It was a good
mix of ages. There were some
older ones and younger ones and
they kind of all help each other
which is nice.

hursday. It cant come soon
enough. Officially, thats the
start of spring. Whether Moth-
er Nature agrees, though, is anyones
guess at this point. Early forecasts
show that she will be good to us, but
how much can we actually rely on
forecasts?
Spring is what we all need. We need
a nice stroll downtown, in the park or
on the beach to reinvigorate us, to get
us out of the doldrum into which win-
ter plunged us. Winter this year has
not just affected all of our moods, it
has affected our bottom lines, too.
Well all most likely be paying more
in taxes, in some way, at some level, for
the extensive snow removal, pothole
repairs and salt purchases.
Snow has affected local businesses
as well, especially retail shops. Bad
weather kept patrons inside from what
seemed like October through now. The
arrival of spring will hopefully turn
that around, and quickly.
Snow kept our schoolchildren at
home which, at the time, they loved
but it will also keep them in school
much longer into the summer. Who
knows how that will affect summer
travel plans? It looks like June 2014
might be scratched off from summer
altogether.
Snow and biting cold has kept peo-
ple in the mindset of no end in sight,
and has prevented many from taking
day trips to our states wonderful good-
weather spots, or from planning future
trips, as well.
In a little more than 60 days, the offi-
cial start of the summer beach season
will be here. Does that even sound
right?
New Jersey relies heavily on
tourism, especially at the Shore dur-
ing the summer. Last summer was
hurt by the aftermath of Hurricane
Sandy. Will this summer be hurt by
more bad weather?
Lets hope not.
in our opinion
Hello, spring, are you here yet?
Our moods, our businesses, our livelihoods depend on your arrival
Your thoughts
What are you most looking forward to this
spring? While you are out and about
enjoying what hopefully will be beautiful
weather, send us the photos you take
along the way, and well be happy to share
them with the rest of the town.
Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D.
Bernardi and Cinnaminson Director of
Public Safety Michael P. King announced
that three Cinnaminson residents already
charged with several armed robberies have
been charged with attempting to rob the
Shell gas station on Route 130 north during
a snowstorm on Jan. 21.
A female, age 28, and a male, age 28, both
of Kelso Lane in Cinnaminson, and a male,
age 26, of Georgetown Road in Cinnamin-
son, were charged on Feb. 28 with attempt-
ed armed robbery and conspiracy for the
Jan. 21 holdup attempt.
The investigation revealed that the
males approached the gas station at ap-
proximately 7:30 p.m. and indicated they
wanted to purchase drinks. The attendant,
who was inside the station, locked the door
and refused to let them inside. The male of
Georgetown Road pulled a black handgun,
but the attendant still would not open the
door. The male of Georgetown Road and
the male of Kelso Lane then ran off toward
Willow Drive, where the female was wait-
ing near the intersection with Lilac Lane
in the getaway car.
The case will be referred to a grand jury
for indictment along with the trios other
charges. All three defendants had an ap-
pearance in Superior Court on March 6,
where the Hon. Thomas P. Kelly, J.S.C. set
the consolidated bail amounts at $450,000
for the male of Kelso Lane, and $350,000 for
the male of Georgetown Road and the fe-
male of Kelso Lane. All three have been in
custody since initially being charged on
Feb 8.
To date, the trio has been charged with
the following armed robberies in Burling-
ton County: Jan. 14, Sunoco, Route 73
South, Maple Shade; Jan. 16, 7-Eleven,
Route 73, Mount Laurel; Jan. 19, Country
Farms, Marne Highway, Hainesport; Jan.
21, Country Farms, Route 73 South, Maple
Shade; Jan. 26, Food Mart, Route 130 North,
Delran; Jan. 27, Town Liquors, Route 130
South, Florence (Male of Georgetown Road
not charged); and Feb. 6, Good Spirits
Liquor Store, Main Street, Maple Shade
(male of Georgetown Road not charged).
Additionally, in Camden County, the
male and female of Kelso Lane have been
charged with four armed robberies, while
the male of Georgetown Road was charged
with three.
The investigation revealed that the de-
fendants frequently used the proceeds from
the robberies to buy heroin in Camden.
Agencies working together to investi-
gate the recent string of armed robberies
include the Burlington County Prosecu-
tors Office, Camden County Prosecutors
Office, Cinnaminson Police Department,
