Music is a fairly specific element of art and games, but your approach worked well and provided some interesting and useful insight into the ways that music is an integral part of games and a form of art in its own right. The range of examples worked well to highlight the different ways that music is used in games as well as the implications of its use. The examples worked well, and approaches like the comparison between good looping music and bad and the breakdown of how music is layered were very interesting. The explanation of musical terms was also clear and easy to understand and did a good job of demonstrating the ways that music can be used in games to different purposes. With respect to the different examples, the ideas were generally explained well, although there were a few places where a bit of additional elaboration or expansion could be helpful. For instance, are there any ways that the music in a game also connects with other artistic elements of the game world, such as narrative or graphics? Are there any differences between linear and adaptive music with respect to their relationship to art? How do things that music provides like ambience, immersion, and a way to enter the magic circle relate specifically to the possibility of games being art? There were also some places where some additional connection to the readings would be helpful. For example, the idea of using music to provoke meaningful moments in gameplay would connect well with Jenkins ideas of games as a new lively art, and Smuts thoughts on the links between more typically recognized kinds of art and games would nicely complement some of the points being made. Bringing in the readings a bit more overall in support of the points being made would help to link together theory and practice a bit more concretely. In general, your presentation style was good you seemed fairly comfortable with the materials and with public speaking in general (although Id recommend making the slides and videos full screen so that theyre easier to see). The slides also worked well, and your questions did a nice job of giving the class an opportunity to bring in their own examples. Your management of the class discussion also worked nicely you actively responded to ideas raised by other people and contributed to the discussion too, which works well for keeping discussion going while making sure that your perspective on the questions that were asked factors in. Overall the questions raised some interesting ideas and you did a good job of leading the discussion in a productive way good work! 16.25 / 20
