Assalamualaikum and a very good morning to the chairperson, ladies and gentlemen. I am Mohd Azman b Mohd Yusoff, a Mathematics teacher from Sekolah Kebangsaan Chuchoh Puteri, Kuala Krai, Kelantan. First and foremost I would like to thank our coordinator for giving me a chance to present this speech today. I am here to present a talk on The Criteria of An Ideal Teacher. The purpose of my talk today is to share some of the characteristics and the potential for being an ideal teacher in each of us and the ways towards it. Teaching profession has become more popular recently and the way to become a teacher is harder than the past. Latest, graduates in this course will need to apply for their teaching job before they are approved by the Ministry of Education as a government servant. To apply for the post, they must obtain higher points in order to compete with other candidates. When talking about being an ideal teacher, I think it is a long journey for us to get through it. As teachers, we face our pupils every day with different attitudes and behaviour as well as their level of abilities. Researchers have come out with their findings and justifications regarding the criteria of an ideal teacher. They can be divided into two domains which are affective and cognitive domain. The affective criteria are like supportive, loving, encouraging, caring and motivating; whereas in cognitive domain the criteria are like knowledgeable, resourceful, intelligent and well qualified. Other criteria focus on the personality that the teacher brings. Today I will touch on all criteria that are mentioned above and I hope that all of us will get some benefits and information regarding this matter. Ladies and gentlemen, To create a good impression, a teacher must be well-dressed. This includes dressing neatly and appropriately when coming into the class. In other words, teachers must have good personal hygiene and are well groomed every time they enter the school or the classrooms in particular. Teachers should always wear the name tag so that pupils can recognize them easily. To be an ideal teacher, we must be well prepared and have sufficient knowledge especially in our subject. This is very important as the preparation in the teaching and learning process. We must also be resourceful for all pupils; which means that we should

have ample information in any matter or event that happens around the school. For this concern, we should practice the lifelong learning process that never ends. Ideal teachers must be creative, imaginative and flexible. In the teaching and learning process, they should create a lively and conducive learning environment so that the pupils will enjoy the lesson. They should make the class more enjoyable and fun with the good sense of humours, varieties of teaching aids, hands on activities and so on. This is very important so that the lesson will not be boring and the objectives will be achieved. Ladies and gentlemen, I believe that an ideal teacher will have an emotional attachment and establish a positive rapport with his or her pupils. He or she is largely responsible to solve the problems of the pupils without expecting anything in return. Children of certain ages trust their teachers even more than their parents. They tend to be closed to the teachers that they are comfortable with to share their problems and stories. An ideal teacher should encourage and inspire his or her pupils to think and help them realize their talents and abilities as well as the needs to pursue them with diligence. The teachers should also motivate them in all aspects and they should not under estimate the pupils capabilities. Self confidence is also essential for being an ideal teacher. It is a source of great pleasure and he or she shows it in the facial expressions and in the positive attitude around the school. Sometimes, a teacher should be stern in educating the pupils. An ideal teacher should also be fair in treating the pupils as they come from different social background. We should realize that all pupils must be treated equally and nobody will be left behind in getting the opportunities to get the maximum input and knowledge that the school offers. Ladies and gentlemen, Let us think for a few seconds, whether we have all the qualities that I have mentioned formerly. Last but not least, I hope that all of us will put more effort to be an ideal teacher or at least with more than 80% of the criteria that I presented earlier. Thank you very much for lending me your ears.
