Juan Enongene has been newly appointed to oversee the functioning of University of BUEAs recently installed Campus Area Network. The network currently spans the administrative building and two other faculties. These are the faculties of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Education. The physical topology consists of a LAN in each faculty and administrative building, interconnected via fiber links. Currently there is one server Room hosting 200 Servers located in the Faculty of Education. Of the 200 Servers up and running, 20 are ftp servers, 4 are web servers 4 are registration servers. The rest are yet to be allocated. This is Juans second week on the job. The first week involved working with the Engineers setting up the network and ensuring everything was configured/working to specifications. At the end of the setup a lot of documentation had been transmitted over to Juan including: - the network Diagram, a document on the IP addressing Scheme, the List of equipment, Administrative username and passwords for all network equipments, Technical documentation and the Contacts of the installation team. Today, the beginning of the Second week, Juan walked onto the office as the phone stopped ringing. It started again one minute after. This time more insistently. Juan picked up the phone, at the other end the Dean was complaining about being unable to connect to file Server 172.1.1.1. Without much ado, Juan gave him the correct address 172.1.1.10. The Dean said thanks and hung up. Juan swore silently. Could the dean not remember something as easy and an IP address? Quietly Juan sat down and began reflecting on how the network could be made easier to manage. The network had to be up and running all the time, Problems needed detected, identified and fixed, A service was needed to match network name to IP address, the network performance had to be known at all times, tracking to ensure the only valid users had to be done at all time. As the list kept getting longer he wondered how it could be done . . .
