Introduction
The code listings presented in this volume are designed to facilitate accurate and rapid coding of all program completion awards indicated by respondents to the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED). The listings include program completion award codes for all known degrees offered in all countries included in the SED database. Postsecondary program award code assignments are presented for each country with abbreviations, where appropriate corresponding to the codes described in Chapters 2 and 3 of Volume 1 of this data series, Using the Survey of Earned Doctorates as a Comparative Research Tool: Volume 1, Technical Description and Coding System Guide. Even if a country is not known to possess a postsecondary education system or to award any postsecondary credentials, it must still be listed and assigned "other" and "unknown" codes in order to capture any possible responses errors or otherwise. Countries are listed in the order in which they appear in the country subcode list. Secondary school completion award codes are also listed. These codes are enclosed in ellipses {} and appear at the beginning of the code list for each country, separated by a line (_______) from postsecondary awards. Information on secondary credentials is presented in order to enable coders to recognize them and avoid coding them as postsecondary awards. In some cases, an SED respondent may erroneously enter a secondary award among his or her educational background data, especially if that award was accepted for postsecondary credit by a U.S. institution. In many cases respondents to SED use U.S. degree nomenclature B.A./B.S., M.A./M.S., Ph.D. rather than that used in the country and at the institution from which a prior credential has been earned. When respondents indicate a U.S. degree title or abbreviation, the response should be coded as if it were a U.S. award. The coding of all U.S. awards, whether reported by American or foreign respondents, follows the award code list for the United States provided in this Volume. Since the U.S. award data are coded under the same system as other awards, neither accuracy nor comparability is sacrificed. For those cases where SED respondents report foreign credentials and do not indicate U.S. awards or equivalents, those foreign awards should be coded using the appropriate codes from the lists presented in this Volume.
