Lenten Regulations for Fasting and Abstinence

The annual observance of Lent is the special season for the ascent to the holy mountain of Easter. Through its twofold theme of repentance and baptism, the season of Lent disposes both the catechumens and the faithful to celebrate the paschal mystery. Catechumens are led to the sacraments of initiation by means of the rite of election, the scrutinies, and catechesis. The faithful, listening more intently to the word of God and devoting themselves to prayer, are prepared through a spirit of repentance to renew their baptismal promises. (Ceremonial of Bishops, 249). REGULATIONS FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE: Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2014, and Good Friday, April 18, 2014, are days for fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. The following may be reproduced in parish bulletins for the purpose of reminding the faithful of the regulations for fast and abstinence: ASH WEDNESDAY, March 5, 2014, and GOOD FRIDAY, April 18, 2014, are days of fast and abstinence. FRIDAYS OF LENT are also days of abstinence. FASTING is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each ones needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. ABSTINENCE is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or renewal of baptism at Easter.

Pray for Cardinal Francis George

Tuesday, March 18, 2014. Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago, is being treated at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, after doctors discovered during a routine checkup late last week that he was dehydrated. The Cardinal has been hospitalized since Friday, after he started experiencing flu-like symptoms earlier last week while keeping to his usual work schedule and appointments. He had gone to Loyola on Friday for his regular checkup on his chemotherapy treatment. After his doctors discussed his symptoms, it was decided that the Cardinal would remain at the hospital until he recovers. He is being treated with an antibiotic and is receiving intravenous fluids. He asks that people continue to pray for him as he continues to keep people in his prayers.

To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign

Respect Life
The following words were written by a young lady who had an abortion, and illustrate a common theme the Church encounters in those who have had abortions. Cases like this show the need for the efforts the pro-life movement makes to counsel those who feel pressured to abort, and to give them alternatives: The counseling was only pro-abortion. No information was given to me about pro-life choices or agencies at the abortion clinic. They also told me it wouldnt hurt. It was extremely painful. I was not told anything about how this would affect me for the rest of my life.
