SO SIGNIFICANT!
Zechariah
Part 1
Presented by Pastor Justin Greene March 23, 2014
Billy Graham includes the following amazing story of Gods care for his people in his wonderful little book, Angels: Gods Secret Agents: The Reverend John G. Paton, a missionary in the New Hebrides Islands, tells a thrilling story involving the protective care of angels. Hostile natives surrounded his mission headquarters one night, intent on burning the Patons out and killing them. John Paton and his wife prayed all during that terror-filled night that God would deliver them. When daylight came, they were amazed to see the attackers leave. They thanked God for delivering them. A year later the chief of the tribe was converted to Jesus Christ. Paton, remembering what had happened, asked the chief what had kept him and his men from burning down the house and killing them. The chief replied in surprise, Who were all those men you had with you there? The missionary answered, There were no men there; just my wife and I. The chief argued that they had seen many men standing

guard hundreds of big men in shining garments with drawn swords in their hands. They seemed to circle the mission station so that the natives were afraid to attack. Only then did Paton realize that God had sent His angels to protect them (Graham, Angels: Gods Secret Agents, Garden City, N.Y.: Doubleday, 1975, p. 3). God does not always act in such an unusual manner, but he is always concerned for the welfare of his children. This is the message of the first two chapters of the Book of Zechariah. In these chapters God expresses his concern for the helpless and oppressed people of ancient Judah. Zechariah begins with a call to repentance (which the people heed) and follows with three fascinating visions, each conveying in some manner Gods care for his people. Zechariahs message of Gods care was written not only for the Jews of twenty-five hundred years ago but for believers today.1

A SIGNIFICANT CALL
Note: Deuteronomy 4:30, 31 When you are in distress and all these things have come upon you, in the latter days you will return to the LORD your God and listen to His voice. 31For the LORD your God is a compassionate God; He will not fail you nor destroy you nor forget the covenant with your fathers which He swore to them.
30
1 Kings 8:47-48 47 If they take thought in the land where they have been taken captive, and repent and make supplication to You in the land of those who have taken them captive, saying, We have sinned and have committed iniquity, we have acted wickedly; 48if they return to You with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies who have taken them captive, and pray to You toward their land which You have given to their fathers, the city which You have chosen, and the house which I have built for Your name;
4
2 Chronicles 30:6-9 6 The couriers went throughout all Israel and Judah with the letters from the hand of the king and his princes, even according to the command of the king, saying, O sons of Israel, return to the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel that He may return to those of you who escaped and are left from the hand of the kings of Assyria. 7Do not be like your fathers and your brothers, who were unfaithful to the LORD God of their fathers, so that He made them a horror, as you see. 8Now do not stiffen your neck like your fathers, but yield to the LORD your God, and enter his sanctuary which He has consecrated forever, and serve the LORD your God, that His burning anger may turn away from you. 9For if you return to the Lord, your brothers and your sons will find compassion before those who led them captive and will return to this land. For the LORD your God is gracious and compassionate, and will turn His face away from you if you return to Him.
Isaiah 55:6-7 6Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. 7Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the Lord, and He will have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.
Jeremiah 35:15 15Also I have sent to you all My servants the prophets, sending them again and again, saying: Turn now every man from his evil way and amend your deeds, and do not go after other gods to worship them. Then you will dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your forefathers; but you have not inclined your ear or listened to Me.

Hosea 14:1 1Return, O Israel to the LORD your God, for you have stumbled because of your iniquity. Joel 2:12-13 12Yet even now, declares the LORD, Return to Me with all your heart, and with fasting, weeping and mourning; 13and rend your heart and not your garments. Now return to the LORD your God, for He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness and relenting of evil. James 4:8-10 8Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.
