Brahma Muhurta

According to tradition, Brahma muhurta is (appx) 1.5 hours before sun rise. When the devotee rises in this way, they are joined by other devotees, in stillness and silence. In this way, the atmosphere about you becomes sacred, congenial and supportive. This is also a good time to walk, or to sing devotional songs, or read beautiful scripture.

Meditation during Brahma Muhurtham

Meditation during the Brahma-Muhurtham (4 AM - 6 AM) is very helpful. During that time a divine energy in the atmosphere seems to hold the mind calm and thoughtless. It is as if God has specially created that period to contemplate on Him. Before meditation if one waves incense sticks before God, it generates devotion which envelops the mind during meditation.

It is traditional to rise early, before the sun, to bathe and begin your morning meditation, all in the sacred atmosphere of Brahma muhurta. Before the sun rises the earth is still, the vibrations of many minds in turmoil have yet to be stirred, so that a pure mental ray pervades your surroundings. Brahma Muhurtham is the early morning, where the noises are near zero and there is ozone in the atmosphere, to purfiy our lungs. Bhagavan Ramana recommends this. He used to get up at 3 am to do kitchen work. Many devotees helped Him in that wee hours because they enjoyed His company. No questions, no clarififcations, simple silent work. 2

They were all benefited from His Silence in those hours. In the Wee Hours I like to call it the "Wee" hours of the early morning. It is the best time to sit, 3-5am (or 4-6am), during the amrit vela, the darkest hours of night right before the dawn appears. It is the time where you can access the infinite universe. The ancients say it's the most powerful time to listen and get connected to the divine intelligence. There are no disturbances and the earth is in her silence. This is the time to wake up and listen, just listen. Listen to the mind's wanderings and off-handed comments. Watch the mind's reactions to everything and simply observe.
