2006.002.0022 Civil War Letters Wing Family Fort Keyes. August 1st 1863 Dear. Mother.

. Your letter of the 24th inst I received yesterday also Waltons of the 26 inst. Was glad to hear you were all well at home. Edd has gone out on picket to day. he intends writing to father and I will also write a few words to father in the same letter We are having very sickly times just now. we draw rations for 66 men we now have 32 sick in camp. 7 sick in hospital not counting in our wounded total. sick 39 men. the number of men who have died sinse we came out is 9. two of this number died from the effects of wounds recd in the skirmish at South Anna bridge on the 4th inst. we have two deserters. and two have been discharged we have on detached servis five missing. two. men. Abner Crannell. Adolphus Berkhart. Abner Orish. Allen D Hubble Abraham White. George Wescott. Alozo Hopkins. Martin Sherman Henry Miller. have died. Ira Norton and Wells E. Stone are deserters. Edward Bronee and Capt Amos B Haviland have been honorably discharged Agustus Sherman. Normon Gourly. Josiah Randal Clifford Hubbard and Fred E. Shaw are on detached servis. Arad B. Mickle and Edgar Comstock are missing We have never had so much sickness in our company as we have at the present time Feaver Ague is this general complaint. Father requested me to give him a list of all who were are away from the Company which I have. I think it is correct. Yesterday there was heavy firing in the directions of Williamsburgh which is 12 miles distant from here. though as yet we have heard nothing of importance Capt Riggs is quite sick in the Hospital also Capt Norris I suppose Adgt Pruyne will be our Major there were two Candidates for the office not including Capt norris. the Officers voted Capt Norris would not run he thought if he could not have his just due without voteing he would not have it at all. therefore the two Candidates for the office was Adjutant Pruyne and Capt Pierse of Company.C. the last named officer was defeated by two votes in favor of Adjt Pruyne Col. Keese has gone home I suppose he will recomend the Adjutant to Gov Seymour I think Col Keese was in favor of Capt Pierce I hear that Capt norris and Capt Riggs have sent in their resignations but say nothing about this. P.S. this envelope is one that I decided to take with me on the march of 15[?] days it has been in my cartridge box since. I send it to show you how well it kept through all of the rain and the damp weather for the most of the boys writing material was spoilt. Henry
