COM211 BUSINESS COMMUNICATION (3 cr.)

ENLl0l English Composition I or ENL102 English Composition II
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students will learn about the principles, practice and concepts of communication in the business environment.
Emphasis will be on developing skills in effective written communication through the application of writing
letters, memos, reports and other common business documents. Effective oral communication such as listening
skills and oral reporting will be included.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
This course aims to:
1. Guide students how to go about writing letters, memos and proposals for business use.
2.
Supervise students in how to conduct presentations of business proposals in a typical meeting.
3.
Develop students interpersonal skills within a business environment.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Successful students should be able to:
1. Identify the components required to execute a winning business document.
2. Explain how business communication plays a central role in the corporate setting.
3. Differentiate the various business communication vehicles and understand how they work holistically to
achieve optimum results.

Assignments: 20%, Oral Report & Written Report: 20%, Mid-Term Exam: 20%, Final exam: 40%.

FINAL EXAMINATION FORMAT:
Duration: 2 Hrs
Section A (30 Marks): Answer All 30 Multiple-Choice Questions.
Section B (50 Marks): Answer All 5 Short-Answer Questions
Section C (20 Marks): Answer 1 out of 2 Essay Questions

COURSE PROJECTS:
1.
Written Assignments:
During the term, students are expected to write at least 4 assignments.
2.
Written Reports:
Students will also write a report based on the data or cases provided by the lecturer at the beginning of the
semester. The report can be written individually or in a group. The report is due on the 12th week.
3.
Oral Reports:
Presentation of oral reports will be conducted during the 12th and 13th week of the semester. Each
presenter is allowed a maximum of 10 minutes and may show illustration, use the white/chalk board,
distribute handouts and make use of other methods to assist in the presentation.
