Valve Packages & Controls 2 Way / 3 Way Valve Packages

Product Information
Model
Fan Coil Valve Package Fankit Price offers 3 levels of valve packages to suite the hydronic control needs of various applications. All packages are available in both 2-way and 3-way congurations. The Basic valve package is a simple costeffective means of controlling water ow to the coil. It features two shut-off valves with memory stops to aid in balancing, and a temperature control valve (TCV) to control the water ow to the coil. The Intermediate valve package adds a much improved method of balancing the water ow with a selectable automatic (xed) or a manual balancing valve (also known as circuit setter). The automatic valve ensures design flows are maintained within 5% over a differential of 2-45 psi. The manual balancing valve comes with a memory stop to ensure the correct balanced setting is not lost when servicing. P/T ports are included to allow for measurement of the pressure and temperature drop across the valve. This pressure drop can be compared to factory supplied tables that provide the relationship of the pressure drop to a specic ow rate. The Deluxe valve package builds on the Intermediate by adding a strainer to the supply and unions to the coil connection. The unions are used to quickly separate the coil from the valve package for maintenance or other issues. Trunk connections are female sweat and the valve body is sized to match the trunk connection size. Coil connection size will vary per unit. Refer to individual product submittals for connection sizes. All packages are leak tested, tagged to correspond with the fan coil tag and drop shipped for eld installation. Basic features: Two shut-off ball valves with memory stop and pressure and temperature (P/T) ports. Temperature control valve (TCV). Intermediate features Basic, plus: Automatic or Manual balance valve. Deluxe features Intermediate plus: Inline supply strainer. Coil unions for simple coil servicing. Options: Basic

Valve Packages & Controls 2 Way / 3 Way Valve Packages

Information Guide
2 Pipe vs 4 Pipe The 2 or 4 pipe designation refers to the hydronic distribution system serving the fan coil unit in a building. A 2 pipe system includes only one supply and only one return pipe to every fan coil unit. This means the fan coil only has one coil which serves as the heating and/or cooling coil. The 4 pipe system includes two supply and two returns per fan coil comprising of a hot water loop and a chilled water loop. Fan coils going into this system typically are supplied with two coils, one for heating and one for cooling. 2 pipe systems are less exible than a 4 pipe system. The entire building will either be in heating or cooling mode during the seasons. A changeover system, meaning it can be changed from heating to cooling or vice versa, is typically done twice a year as the season changes. This can cause some users discomfort when unusual weather patterns occur. The benet to the two pipe system is the reduction in capital cost to the building. There is less piping length, coils, pumps, connections, etc. in the system making the up-front cost very attractive. A 4 pipe system has the ability to supply heat to one room while cooling another. This provides increased user comfort in the space as weather outside changes. There is a larger capital cost to the system as two sets of pipe lengths, coils, pumps, connections, etc., will increase the up-front cost of the building. A 4 pipe system can provide more exibility with control options and accuracy in the operation of the system. 2 Way vs 3 Way Valves Valve control is used to provide the variable load flow. Identical thermal response relating to the load is achieved with either a 2 way or 3 way valve and actuator. The three way valve is usually in the mixing location, installed on the return side of the coil. Mixing valve implies that two inlets, one from the coil return and one from the bypass, come together and exit out of one point. The 2 way valve has one inlet and one outlet which essentially throttles the ow. The selection of either type of valve is typically driven by the design of the system. When a 3 way valve is employed, the total ow rate through the system, or at the least coil, is essentially constant. This makes the activation and deactivation of zones transparent to the pump. This means that being constant ow the energy used in the system and pump is usually considered the full load energy rate. The 2 way valve has the added feature of variable ow through the system and coil. This allows reduction in pump pressure and size and reductions in system energy as zones are turned on or off. Because of the dynamics of the pressure variations, application of 2 way valves requires careful design attention to the location of the constant pressure point, maximum allowable pressure differential across the valves, and characteristic curves of the pumps. Automatic (Fixed Flow) vs Manual Balance Valves There are many reasons for balancing a system, but the two major impacts are energy consumption and control functionality. A balancing valve is an inexpensive piece of equipment that has disproportionately high impact on how a building heating or cooling system can and will operate. Without balancing, proper control would be difcult and may even be impossible. Using a balancing valve reduces overow to the coil, reduces potential valve chatter, wear, and failure, and reduces pumping requirements. It also provides control so the equipment can perform the function they are designed to provide. Manual Balancing Valve This is still one of the most commonly specified methods of balancing. These valves are supplied with a specific Cv based on the original design selection. The Cv indicates the valves characterized ow across a pressure differential of 1 psi. (Ex. A Cv of 2.0 indicates that at 1 psi the valve will have a ow of 2.0 gpm.) The balancer can test the pressure across the valve, adjust the ow using the throttling valve to the specied ow based on the Cv chart of ow verse pressure differential. The pressure differential range of the manual balancing valve is typically between 0.5 and 5 psi. Conventional manual balancing valves require more than one pass of the system before a balance can be achieved. Adjusting one valve in the system circuit changes the pressure and ow thorough every other valve in that circuit. It typically takes 3 passes or more to ensure that adequate balance has been achieved to the entire system. This is known as Test, Adjust, and Balance and is part of the commissioning process of all buildings and systems. Automatic (Fixed Flow) Balancing Valve Automatic valves, also known as xed ow valves, function by controlling a set ow (usually design ow) across a large range of differential pressure. (eg. 2 gpm @ 2-45 PSID) This adds great benets to dynamic systems when the pressure changes due to the activation or deactivation of a zone. The automatic valve will function at the xed ow setting as long as the minimum differential pressure is maintained. The design of the system and pumps, when using an automatic valve, should control the overall pressure in the system to ensure all automatic balancing valves receive the appropriate pressure. The value of the automatic balancing valve eliminates a large portion of the cost during the test, adjust and balance of the system. Balancers need only check and ensure that the automatic valve differential pressure is between 2-45 psi to know that the ow has been achieved for the particular coil unit. This can usually be accomplished during the rst pass of the system. Noise Sensitive Applications (NSA) All valves and pipes make noise as we introduce fittings, elbows, flow control and even balancing devices. All these components add pressure drop when introduced to the ow of the system. Noise is caused either by the excess ow through pipes and components that are too small or by high pressures in the system that force the ow through components that have improperly sized Cvs. The solution is selection the right piping package for the required ow rate and pressure. Price Valve Kits are recommended for ow velocities ranging from 2.0 ft/sec minimum, to 7.0 ft/sec maximum. Velocities below 2.0 ft/ sec will result in ow stratication and entrainment of air. Velocities above 7.0 ft/ sec will be noisy and lead to premature heat exchanger failure due to erosion.
