The Nile Valley Day 1 Subject: Ancient History Topic: The Nile Valley Lesson Summary: On day 1 the

students will be introduced to The Nile Valley. The key terms from the Reflections textbook will be front loaded to the students through the use of a slideware presentation. After reading through the text, students will construct modern day and historical maps based upon the Nile Valley in Egypt.

Lesson Objectives: The Nile Valley The students will describe the location and geography of the Nile River (map activity) The students will explain how geography affected the political, economic and religious structures of the civilization of Egypt.

Standards: HSS 6.2 Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious and social structures of the early civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Kush. Standard 1: Locate and describe the major river systems and discuss the physical settings that supported permanent settlement and early civilizations CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.7 Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts. Craft and Structure CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.5 Describe how a text presents information (e.g., sequentially, comparatively, causally).

Duration: 1 hour

Anticipatory Set: The students will playing the game Land of the Egyptians through the National Scots musemum website. This will allow students to begin to discover the topography of ancient Egypt surrounding the Nile. Input: Using a slide ware presentation, introduce the following key terms: delta, cataract, predict, arid, afterlife. Students can use the comment boxes on the google slide to ask questions about the key terms. As a class students will read aloud and pair share about the key questions from the reading pgs. 132-139 in the Reflections textbook. While reading the students can take notes based upon their social studies guided reading notes. k/ Model: The teacher will share an example of what the Egyptian map should be labeled, colored and the materials that will be used. After checking for understanding the teacher will share additional resources from the textbook and the online textbook resource to help the students begin drawing their maps. In addition, I will show the students how to do a safe search of pictures online using google images to help them find pictures for their glogster (online poster). The students can use their own drawings and pictures by taking a picture and saving it on their computer. Glogster e.g.

Independent Practice: The students are released to work on their maps and will be directed to use their e- textbook Homework: The students will reread and answer questions 1-6 on page 139 from their Reflections textbook, using a google document and share their work with me in our classroom folder. The students will have the following quiz tomorrow.
