Statement of Purpose

A man can climb any heights in his life if he knows the secret of making his dreams true.
This secret for me are curiosity, confidence, and courage. When my one dream comes
true, with more enthusiasm, I always begin to look towards the next one. From the
childhood my thinking is curious and technical. As my grand father was Physician, I was
always asking him, how can you listen the heart sound by just placing the stethoscope on
the chaste? And how can you measure the Blood Pressure just by wrapping the cuff
around the arm with pressurizing and depressurizing the cuff?

Day by day my curiosity get increased as I came across different kind of medical
instruments taking from small syringe pump to big imaging instruments like X-Ray, C.T-
Scan and M.R.I. I was amazed that these instruments are the hand of the doctors for the
treatment and diagnosis purpose. So from that time it has became the goal of my life to
learn and make new advancements medical instrument in my life. When I had completed
10th grade of my schooling I came across the Biomedical and Instrumentation
Engineering branch in my city which apply engineering principles and techniques to the
medical field to improve healthcare diagnosis and treatment. I was really attracted to get
admission for my bachelor’s study in this branch of engineering to achieve my goal. So I
had decided to choose science stream to get admission in this field. My goal of being
most successful Biomedical and Instrumentation engineering was started implementing
as I got admission and step by step completing different semester with variety of subjects
and participating in various project and paper presentation competition. I was learning
different existing technique and principles from my curriculum and learning new
advancement by participating in competition and learning those practically by making
working model and participating in project competition.

I was often visiting different departments of hospital and tried to learn different medical
instrument’s operation, their drawback and limitation. Then I was using internet and
other biomedical publications to understand them properly and to find out different ways
to overcome their limitation. Then I was combining this knowledge in one paper
presentation form and I was representing them during different paper presentation
competition. As I had completed my first year with basic engineering subjects, in third
semester of my undergraduate I had participated in national level paper presentation
competition with the paper of heart lung machine. In that I had explained different part of
the machine with different sensors, how that machine is attached with the human body
during open heart surgery, its advantages and its draw back. During forth semester I had
participated in working model contest with the model of Telemedicine named “Medical
Innovation”. In that we had explained the principal of telemedicine. We took two
computer among them one computer is labeled as patient computer and other is as
surgeon computer. Robotic arm is interfaced with the patient computer to do various
basic operations like grip, shoulder movement, wrist movement, elbow movement. This
basic operation is controlled by surgeon side computer. It was just basic model to
represent that if patient is in some rural area, and doctor want to do some of surgery on
patient then he is able to do that by using his surgeon computer though he is far from
patient.

During my fifth semester I won first prize in national level project competition for the
project of clogging sensor. In this project we had made sensor which is attached with the
I.V set of the gravity aided fluid transfusion system. This sensor is successfully detect
and give alarm during the interruption in fluid or blood transfusion in patient body. This
sensor eliminates the constant need of monitoring the patient by hospital personnel. This

project was highly appreciated by physician and surgeons. During the sixth semester I
had participated in national level paper presentation competition with paper on
endoscopes with the name “Endoscope-Turning point in surgical instruments”. In this
paper I had explained rigid and flexible endoscope. Different subsystems used with this
endoscope like supply systems, photographic systems, light source. Along with this how
endoscopes are used for cutting, coagulation and to perform different surgical
procedures.

In my sixth semester as a part of curriculum I had presented seminar on Robotics in

medical field. This explains different kind of robots like Surgical Robots, Hospital
Robots, Laboratory Robots, Drug delivery and Anesthesia Robots, Rehabilitation Robots.
Here, I had concluded the draw back and limitations of these robots that restrict its wide
use and its possible solutions to overcome this.

So, I can say I got very good platform to grow my self and learn lot of things from my
curriculum, during my different short visit of hospitals, and from my meet with doctors
and technicians. But I was always thinking to reach the imaging instrument and to learn
about the process of digital processing of images. In my curriculum I had studied the
subjects like radiology and medical imaging, nuclear medicine and instruments in my
final year. But they are not with enough depth to satisfy my curiosity. To understand that
practically I had worked as a Jr. Exe. Biomedical engineer in one of the famous multi
specialty well equipped BAPS Pramukhswami Hospital in surat India. I worked for 9
months. I had worked in different departments of hospital like I.C.U, Operation Theaters,
Radiology, Pathology, E.N.T, Causality, Central Sterilization and more. But at that time I
was especially attracted towards Radiology department to study more and more about
C.T scan, PET, SPECT and M.R.I imaging. I got enough opportunity solve breakdown
problem associated with C.T Scan and M.R.I Especially this has attracted me to do
masters in Biomedical image processing.

It is my desire to grow in my field continuously with gaining and sharing the gained
knowledge. I have proclivity for research, teamwork, a passion for challenges and a thirst
to succeed. University of Texas at San Antonio meets my requirements fully with its state
of the art laboratory, research facilities and highly experienced faculty. MS Degree from
your esteemed university will really help me to take a step further towards realizing my
long term goal.
