Welcome to English 11IB! We have a lot of work to do, and a very short time to get it done, so buckle up...here we go!! This year, we will be focusing on two of the four IB English sections (Works in Translation and Literature and Film) with a few other things thrown in to keep it interesting. To be successful in this class, do it the B-R-I-T way! Challenge yourself Join the discussion Ask questions Support others in their learning Be on time for class Come prepared to learn, bring pens, pencils, binders, novels etc. Respect deadlines and due dates* Turn off cellphones, music players etc. and put them away Bring a note for absences and make up missed work as soon as possible Practice academic honesty** Do your fair share of group work Help to create a positive classroom Take the time to do good work Keep trying until you get it right Zero is not an option hand in all assigned work, even if it is incomplete Set goals and strive to reach them

* Late assignments will only be accepted if you have made prior arrangements, or, with a note if due to illness. **Cheating, or allowing others to cheat from you, will result in a zero grade. The school cheating policy is in effect at all times.

Course Content Students will read 6 novels, and view three or four companion films. They will produce a 1,200-1,500 word literary analysis on one of the works in translation and prepare an oral presentation on the adaptation of text to film, in addition to a number of in-class writings and presentations. The class textbook will be English A1: Course Companion. Students must have a soft cover notebook or duo tang as a journal, in addition to any other notebook or binder for this class. Learning Objectives/IB Course Aims Introduce students to a range of texts from different periods, styles and genres Develop in students the ability to engage in close, detailed analysis of individual texts and make relevant connections Develop the students powers of expression, both in oral and written communication Encourage students to recognize the importance of the contexts in which texts are written and received Encourage, through the study of texts, an appreciation of the different perspectives of people from other cultures, and how these perspectives construct meaning Encourage students to appreciate the formal, stylistic and aesthetic qualities of texts Promote in students an enjoyment of, and lifelong interest in, language and literature Develop in students an understanding of the techniques involved in literary criticism Develop the students ability to form independent literary judgments and to support those ideas

*Students will be assessed on the grade 11 portions of the course this year, and the grade 12 portions of the course next year. The two years combined make up the entire Language A1 requirement in IB. ** Students will complete additional in-class assignments in order to assess ongoing progress. These assignments, along with IB course work will be used to create a school grade independent of IB.
