Challenges in application of Management Information Systems (MIS) within India 1.

0 Introduction Management Information Systems is growing very popular in todays business world as a vital tool of Decision Support Technologies. Management Information System (MIS) offers collecting and processing of raw data into useful information and its dissemination to the user in the required format. It consists of information, which impacts managements to feel the pulse of the organization and take decisions accordingly. In fact a full MIS consists of all the systems that the institution uses too generate the information that guide managements decisions and actions. Many companies have been implementing MIS in their respective organizations and reorganizing their business processes. MIS mainly depend on Information Technologies (IT); consequently, successful MIS can be measured by the effectiveness of IT to support an organizations strategies. 1.1 Studies that have addressed the implementation of MIS in an organization According to Ein-Dor and Segev (1978), a Information System becomes a management information system (MIS) when it is applied to improve management by directors of the organization. This system can increase the performance of the management. MIS is a collection of manpowers, tools, procedures and software to perform various business tasks at various levels in the organization (Tripathi, 2011). There are various challenges faced by an organization in implementing a proper MIS in the organization (Kornkaew, May, 2012). Even the implementation of a MIS can provides accurate and timely information necessary to facilitate the decision-making process and enable the organizations planning, control, and operational functions to be carried out effectively (Reddy, Srinivasu, Rikkula and Rao, 2009). 1.2 Deficiencies in Studies This report will not consider the aspects of implementation of MIS in organizations globally. It will only focus on the Indian perspective on implementation of MIS and the issues, hurdles and challenges to do so because no proper and specific study has been done in all those research papers about the Indian organizations and there issues in implementing MIS as a effective tool. As Indian problems, issues and challenges are much more different than that in some European

country. So a proper research should be conducted in reference to Indian Business environment by deep analysis of Indian organizations and their behavior and flexibilities to implement a MIS as a process in their organization. 1.3 Issues in usage of MIS The demand for efficient and effective use of IT is also gradually increasing at the present time, but still a gap can be found between the organizations and IT. An organization that adopted an IT system to provide special attention to planning, acquisition, and implementation of these technologies are comfortable with MIS but the others who havent yet transformed themselves and are still stick to old process of Information systems or semi-transformed to Information Systems. Those associates must be aware of the various numbers of issues which are a part of the ability of the organization to achieve effective IT implementation. Some of the complexities in installing a MIS of software to meet the needs of the organizations are discussed below. Many Institutional Models: There are various MIS for different types of business and organizational structure. All have their own varied type of requirement for MIS and its automation. As per the demand the MIS is not readily available in the open market and it need to be specifically developed leading to a increase in cost and requirement of more trained and experienced staff leading to a increase in cost of operation and development of MIS. Different working Methodologies: Organizations have vastly different work

methodologies across the globe, even within the same country and industry too. Some organizations follow individual working process and projects where as some follow team work and others may work on a mix of both in different department methodology. Lack of awareness: Considering the aforementioned context, it is important to notice that a lack of awareness of numerous and varied challenging issues surrounding the implementation process could cause problems for the whole process of MIS development and deployment. Lack of key success issues: It seems to be a serious obstacle for the MIS implementation process. It is essential to define the success factors and manage them in order to carry out a successful the implementation

Management process issues: It speaks about the functional operation of an organization such as budgeting, personnel, and general management. Organizational environment issues: It is identified as factors which are less tangible such as organizational culture, change, and behavior. Leadership issues: It is relate to the areas which involve the interaction and direction of the organization executive. Technical systems issues: They are mainly those referring to the hardware and software considerations of information technologies. Personnel issues: They are those issues surrounding each individual in the organization.

1.4 Significance of study in Indian Context MIS implementation effects an organization and these effects are related to the consequences of the business processes. Consequently, this issue is critical and crucial for an organization to consider when implementing a new MIS in the organization. The problem addressed in this study focus the challenges and key success issues regarding MIS installation and implementation. Additionally, the problem addressed in this study refers to effects and consequences on an organization and its business process. 1.5 Research Questions/Intent of the study.

The study will be to broadly identify the various challenges issues in implementation of a Management Information System in context to Indian Organizations and to help them in understanding the broader concept of the MIS and is usage in an organization along with the key to various issues like cost, up-gradation of MIS versions, technical aspects and role of MIS in decision process by the management. The following research questions were identified: What problems/challenges have been faced in MIS implementation processes in Indian Organizations? What are the key issues that need to be identified in order to achieve a successful MIS implementation in Indian Organizations? What are the effects and consequences for an Indian organization and its processes when implementing MIS?
