When Mrs. Miller came to OPHS, she expanded
the ceramics program by introducing Ceramics
III (honors), and AP-3D Studio Art. This is her
ninth year teaching AP classes and she has had
a 100% student-passing rate for the previous
eight years. She claims that her students suc-
cess is due to the experience she gained from
the National Board Certifcation she pursued
and achieved. This certifcation enhanced her
ability to design appropriate student lessons
that elevate their learning and prepares them
for the challenging expectations of an ad-
vanced placement class. She also believes that
her love of teaching and for her students, her
dedication, and her drive to instill in each stu-
dent the desire to excel helps to create success-
ful high achievers. In addition, her partnership
with colleagues, parents, and the community
strengthen her students education. Every year
her students help to make a diference in our
community. For years her entry-level ceramics
students have created and donated thousands
of clay bowls to the Empty Bowls Charity, a
fundraising event sponsored by the Salvation
Army. She then challenges and encourages her
AP students to use their high level skills and
creativity to make impressive clay bowls for an
auction which includes works donated by art-
ists from our community. She proudly displays
her students artworks every year at the Orange
Park Public Library in support of art awareness
and art education. Her students gold key art-
works will be displayed at Jacksonville down-
town Library (303 N. Laura St. Jacksonville) dur-
ing the month of February.

Shannon Chaf, a 5th grade teacher at Shad-
owlawn Elementary, was recognized for her
dedication to advancing her students knowledge
about space. Chaf was honored by NASA and has
received a plaque with her name on it in the As-
tronaut Hall of Fameat the Kennedy Space Center.
Ryu- one of Chafs students stated, Im re-
ally proud of Mrs. Chaf for getting into the Hall
of Fame. She always teaches about rockets, NASA,
and space.
Chaf has been working for the Clay County
School District for 19 years. While in the class-
room she approaches science with hands on ex-
periences that motivates and excites her students.
Tanner, a 5th grader, says, She does really fun
experiments and shes an awesome teacher. Chaf
believes that labs are the best way for her stu-
dents to retain information and further learning.
I am honored by this recognition and hope I
inspire my students to dream, conquer, and to al-
ways look up and know their future holds as many
choices as our galaxy holds stars, Chaf noted.
NASA is centered on employees with a back-
ground in STEM- Science, Technology, Engineer-
ing, and Mathematics. In order to succeed in
STEM careers the process begins in the classroom
with the guidance of teachers. Chaf showed ex-
cellence in this task and was recognized for her
passion to innovate and engage her students.
Jaden, another 5th grader exclaimed, She
teaches space in a fun way and shes out of this
world.
