Ups: There could be many occasions which can be considered Ups in the Bechtel business life.

Almost all these occasions are already covered in the portions of other group members in detail. In my opinion the Ups could be: - Building Hoover dam - Entering in the business of Gas pipelines

Downs: There is no specific content available mentioning Down in terms of failure or very tough time in business for Bechtel but there are some unproved allegations which damage the reputation and brand name of Bechtel group. These allegations can be considered as Down for the Bechtel and can be included in the presentation if looks appropriate. - Bechtel group has manipulated to get big contracts due to their political and financial influence in the American politics. So there was not a level playing field and the Bechtel group is having extra advantages as compare to other business groups. E.g Stephen Bechtel Sr.s close friendship with Steve McCone was arguably the real reason that Bechtel Corporation was so successful in the business of nuclear power plant building. The two men had made millions together as partners in the California Ship Building Company which built warships for the U.S. military during World War II. After their stint as war profiteers, the two parted ways and McCone started his career as a public servant. In 1948, he was appointed U.S. Deputy to the Secretary of Defense, and then from 1950-51 served as Under Secretary of the Air Force (19501951). However, it was McCone's position as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) that probably was the most significant in determining Bechtel's future. (Wise and Ross 1974; MacCartney 1989; Riccio 1989) The company further penetrated the barrier between private industry and the federal government when Kenneth Davis, a former Bechtel

vice president of nuclear reactor development went on to become U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy and head of the AEC under Reagan. (MacCartney 1989; Montague 2000) etc (the rest of allegation are in detail at http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article3397.htm ) - Not doing safety checks during decommissioning of a former nuclear weapons site at Hanford Washington. - The Bechtel-McCone alliance, being short of capital, invented the ingenious "cost-plus" contract arrangement. Under this generous stipulation, the government guaranteed war contractors all costs of production, plus a guaranteed 10% profit. The more the contractor spent, the greater his profit. It was the greatest boondoggle for the fortunate few since the Federal Reserve System started printing paper money with no backing except paper bonds.
