Purpose: The purpose of this lab activity is to prove how a humans estimation skills may be very far off

track from the real accurate amount. In addition, this lab will allow us students experience using law equipment. This lab may also allow a closer view of human error.

Background Information/Research: Tools such as beakers, graduated cylinders, Erlenmeyer flasks, and volumetric flasks are used to measure the volume of liquid. Volume is the amount of space that an object takes up, or its capacity. Graduations are the marks on the measuring tools that indicate an interval of measurement. Meniscus is the slight curve of the surface of a liquid. A meniscus is created by cohesion and adhesion. Cohesion is the act of molecules being attracted to each other closely. Adhesion is the act of molecules being attached to a surface. Citation: Science notebook

Hypothesis: 5 drops of liquid will be able to raise the level of that liquid by one milliliter.

Experiment:

1) Materials: -Graduated cylinder with graduations of an interval of 1mL -Beaker -Ruler -Eye Dropper -Mysterious liquid

2)Procedure:

a) Fill the graduated cylinder with exactly 10mL of mysterious liquid. Record this amount in a chart.

b) Raise the level of mysterious liquid to 11mL while counting the number of drops it takes from 10mL to get to 11mL. Record the number of drops in the chart.

c) Raise the level of mysterious liquid to 12mL while counting the number of drops it takes to get from 11mL to 12mL. Record the number of drops in the chart.

d) Raise the level of mysterious liquid to 13mL while counting the number of drops it takes to get from 12mL to 13mL. Record the number of drops in the chart.

e) Calculate the average number of drops it takes to raise the level of mysterious liquid by 1mL. Round

to the nearest tenth.

Conclusion: I can conclude from my results that my hypothesis was incorrect. My estimation was very far away from the exact amount of drops. There was a slight difference in the results

that I received when I had done the experiment myself and when my partner had done the experiment with me, so some kind of error must have occurred during either one of the tests. I learned from this experiment that a human can easily overestimate or underestimate a value. Many people have different estimation skills, and humans often tend to underestimate or overestimate a value for example, lots of students tend to overestimate the amount of time they have to do homework and study. Some teachers tend to underestimate their students abilities and academic knowledge. In addition, I learned that different people have different balance of equality and perfection. For example, when my partner and I were conducting the experiment, there were times when I thought that the water level had already reached 12mL, but my partner insisted that a few more drops were needed. Many errors may have occurred in this experiment. One of the errors that is likely to have occurred is adhesion. Adhesion causes the liquid to stick the the surface inside of the graduated cylinder. Mass would be lost from the drop of liquid, and calculations will be incorrect. Another error may be that our (my partner and my) eyes or sense of balance of equality may have been slightly off by a few drops. That may cause a big difference in the results. In addition, we may have conducted a few more test runs to get a more accurate result.
