STEEL GRATING OVERVIEW AND APPLICATIONS

STEEL GRATING COMPANY PROFILE

Welcome to Steel Grating Limited, where we manufacture strong, safe, low-maintenance steel grating and accessories for a wide range of industrial uses. Steel Grating Limited is the only grating manufacturer in the South Island. From our Christchurch headquarters we manufacture and fit a variety of economical and practical products for commercial buildings, the automotive and assembly industries, factories, oil installations, generating plants and food processing. In fact, Steel Grating Limiteds products can be utilised anywhere that ease of movement and safety is required for staff and merchandise. Because of our robust design and spanning abilities our steel grating is extremely strong and safe for the support of structures such as mezzanine floors and elevated walkways. Steel grating has many uses in the freezing industries as hygienic flooring for livestock pens and sheds, and for small applications such as drain covers. The grating has 80% open area which makes for quick and easy wash-downs and fast natural drying. Building to published Australian standards, Steel Grating Limited also offers fibre glass grating in addition to our steel and aluminium grating systems and accessories. Steel Grating Limited has been owned and operated by Richard (Rick) Montagu since January 1997. At Steel Grating Limited we are dedicated to ensuring the job is completed on time and to your satisfaction. Each job can be custom designed to fit your requirements.

STEEL GRATING LOAD BAR DIRECTION

It is important to check the direction of the load bars when ordering steel grating. Diagram to the right shows the right and wrong way of the load bar direction. The left diagram shows the correct way to order steel grating. The load bar takes the weight on top of the support. The diagram on the right shows the incorrect way to order steel grating. Here the cross bars are taking the weight of the load and the panel will collapse under pressure due to the lack of support under the load bars. The load bar must simply be supported at its outer most edges.

STEEL GRATING STAIR TREADS

STEEL GRATING SERIES 3 (60MM CENTRES)

This type of grating is often used in the mining industry. Steel Grating Limited Series 3 Grating is mainly used in the mining industry as it minimizes the build-up of spillages on the flooring. The openings let small matter fall through while larger matter will stay on the grating. Series 3 is a very lightweight design and is not recommended for high-impact loads. Series 3 is available in 25 x 5 and 32 x 5.

STEEL GRATING STAIR TREADS

Our stair treads are most commonly done in the forge bar grating. We can however make them in twistlock in mild steel and aluminium. We can manufacture stair treads to any length and width to meet your specifications. Below is a table of guidelines for different grating types and their recommended span. Steel Grating Limited also provides floor plate nosings on stair treads for definition and yellow abrasive nosings for high definition and extra grip. Serrated treads are also available.

STEEL GRATING CORROSION AND CHEMICAL RESISTANCE

Steel Grating Limiteds molded grating is manufactured in an open, heated mold. Continuous E-glass fibres are places in the mold in alternating layers, and are completely wetted out with resin. This continuous process produces an integral, one piece construction which provides excellent corrosion resistance as well as bi-directional strength. Many types of mesh and panel sizes can be obtained as per different mold design. Corrosion can be a major problem for metal grating, stair treads and other products in industries such as chemical plants, food and beverage factories, water and waste facilities and power facilities. Steel Grating Limiteds molded grating has been particularly designed to provide safe, long lasting, economical and worry-free solutions in environments where chemicals and other corrosive elements attack and destroy metal.

STEEL GRATING SLIP RESISTANCE

Slips and falls are the major enemy in many different industries- leading to injuries within the workplace. Steel Grating Limiteds slip resistant molded gratings have consistently reduced slips and falls in industrial facilities. Our grating, stair treads, covers and plates feature a long-lasting, slip-resistant surface. Even after years of abuse, our molding grating provides significantly higher slip resistance than metal, wood or concrete floors.

31

Steel Grating Limited molded grating has a meniscus (concave) top surface for slip resistance. This is created after it is extracted from the mold. Should a grit surface be specified, the grit will either be bonded to the top of the completed panel grating as a secondary operation or embedded into the top of the grating before heating. Steel Grating Limited has three types of surface systems to offer maximum slip resistance for most applications: A concave top surface formed naturally during the molding process An embedded grit surface A post-cure grit surface Diamond top or gritted colour tops are available on request.

STEEL GRATING LIMITED FASTENING CLIPS

When grating cannot be fixed by welding the grating to its support, we recommend Steel Grating Limited fastening clips. The clips are designed to be used on all of our grating series and we recommend a minimum of four clips per panel. On larger panels we recommend additional clips at mid-span width. We also provide a stainless steel top clip to use when fitting F.R.P grating and all abrasive nosings.

STEEL GRATING TERMINLOGY

1. Load Bar - the flat bar standing on its edge which carries the weight. 2. Cross Bar - the twisted rod or flat bar fixed at 90 to the load bar. The cross bar holds the load bars together. 3. Banded/Banding - this is the process of welding a trim bar around the edge of the load bars once it has been cut to the required size. 4. Span - is the over all length of the panel measured parallel to the load bar. i.e. - the length of the load bar. 5. Width - this is the overall length of the panel measured at 90 to the load bar. 6. Serrations - notches taken out of the tip of the load bar to enhance skid resistance. 7. Nosing - a member on the front edge of a stair tread or landing to help create definition and to enhance in skid resistance. 8. Kick plate - typically a large flat bar welded to the edge of the grating wherever specified and normally 100mm above the walking service. 9. Cut-outs - areas of flooring removed to permit passage for plant, structural and handrail components to sit in.
