Kappas main #loc- features a ladder frame construction for superior structural stiffness while its cylinders are fitted with cast$iron liners for improved a#rasion dura#ility. %dditional weight was shaved off #y integrating the engine support #rac-et with the timing chain cover. Aut pro#a#ly the most significant engineering innovation is Kappas offset cran-shaft( an engineering concept first adopted in the Bamma engine introduced last year. <nli-e a conventional engine where the centreline of the cylinder #ore is in perfect vertical alignment with the rotating a7is of the cran-shaft( the Kappas centreline is offset #y a small distance. Ay creating this offset distance( engineers have succeeded in minimi;ing the side force created #y the pistons. 3he net effect is

an improvement in fuel consumption and a reduction in noise( vi#ration and harshness. "ngineers also devised an innovative piston concept to reduce piston mass. 3he shape of the piston s-irt was optimi;ed to reduce its si;e while the compression height of the piston was also reduced( resulting in precious weight savings. 3he optimi;ed piston s-irt is also treated with 5oly#denum 9isulfide (5o82!( a special anti$friction coating. % highly sophisticated process of 1hysical Capor 9eposition (1C9! is used to apply an ultra$thin layer of chromium nitride (.r4! to the pistons oil ring. .r4 ensures high wear resistance and a low friction coefficient. .r4$coated piston rings using 1C9 is an innovative technology #orrowed from the 3au C: engine that Hyundai introduced earlier this year. 0riction #etween the oil ring and cylinder wall has #een further minimi;ed #y reducing the oil ring tension. 3he smaller mass and special surface treatment of the piston s-irt and oil rings yielded additional savings in fuel consumption. Kappa is the first Hyundai engine to #e fitted with an accessory drive #elt which does not re)uire a mechanical auto$tensioning ad*ustment device( reducing the hardware and further lowering weight and cost. Aecause it is designed to maintain an ideal tension setting( the #elt runs )uieter and with proper preventative maintenance and care( the #elt will last 100(000 miles.
